I grew up along that road. Timestamp 5:51, a sandwich shop sat at the corner of Moonshine Road & Rt. 72. Timestamp 7:52, Chapel Road a 'haunted' house sat at the intersection. Timestamp 11:20-we used to pick watercress near this bridge every spring. Timestamp 17:00, straight stretch of road, we lived a long there. Had two big blue spruce trees in the front yard, with a pond next door. Timestamp 19:30, there was at least one house up there. It was one of our school bus stops. Haven't been back there in years. Real nice little adventure. Love those dumps you explored. I'll bet there's older vintage bottles & cans under the ground. Those on top looked like they were found and dropped there.
If that's a state park aren't they responsible if anyone, mainly a child, falls down that well and either gets severely injured, or worse dead? Yeah, I agree it needs to be capped off, permanently!
I agree that well is extremely dangerous. Some evil individual could camefloge it somehow hoping someone falls in. Trust me there's individuals of that nature.
You just pretty much described what the government did there. Took the land for nothing, then left it for nature to do the camo job. Easy to see how someone could get too close in the summertime with the plants leafed out, and fall in.

Great video again, Cliff👍 Yeah , that well is seriously dangerous, if it is 20 feet deep, no normal person would have a good chance of getting out again 😳
I was planning to walk up at Swatara S.P. on Monday anyway on my day off, so the release of this video was perfect. I did my own video recording (for my own purposes) and found the sticker. Also met another couple about 5 minutes later named Jeff and Loraine who were looking for it as well. Very nice people and I felt bad I got there first. It was so nice walking up the abandoned highway knowing a history of what I was seeing. I had no idea until I got home later in the afternoon that about 10 miles north of where I was, was the huge pile up on I-81 after one of the snow squalls hit. So very sad and also explained why I heard and saw so many helicopters as well. Cliff, I sent you an email with pictures.
Hey Cliff, thanks for the walk and history. I'm thinking they could drive a small skid loader with a blade on it to push some surrounding dirt into that well or whatever it was/is. Wonder if maybe it fills with water and just looks like a puddle at times, or like you said it was covered last time you looked. That's not something you would miss you're a very thorough person.
@@thewanderingwoodsman7227 cool! In the mid-90's, me and about 10 other buddies rode our sportbikes there. We picked up any bigger rocks and debris, and had drag races through one of the tunnels. It sounded INTENSE, lol. Back then, all of our bikes were carbeurated, and key shots sounded like freaking canon blasts. It was a great time.
Cliff, I traveled that road many many times before the state took over the properties. The project was part of Project 70 which was enacted in 1964 Just after the bridge where you hid the sticker, there were a few single homes on the straight stretch and in the dip at the end of the straight stretch, there was a single house where a blind man lived. I think it might have been where you found the deep well. Also, about halfway in the straight stretch, there was a farm and every fall they would butcher and have the steers and pigs hung from 2 leaning poles against the barn. Near the end of the paved section on the right side of the highway, there was a house that sat below the road surface up against the bank. There was a car counter facing south about 50 feet beyond that house as well.
That was really great. I've gone mountain biking on the Swatara Trails before but not for a long time now, and I've found my way onto parts of that abandoned highway but I never realized how long it was before. I wonder if it actually connected to Gold Mine Road at one time, before the modern PA 72 was there?
I love how you weave so much history into your walks. Your stories are great. Well: is it state property? I'm wondering if there's someone you can call so that it can be covered up. I would contact the state department of parks--as you pointed out, it's dangerous. Some kids could be out exploring, hunters maybe, or if it were snow-covered.
As if the state cares about anyone. Would not have taken the land in the first place unless they were sure the project was happening. They don't care if some normies fall in an old well.
COVID-19 hit !! Love ❤️ your videos!! Please let the game. Commission to know about the well! Extremely dangerous! Let them know how to get their!!Great job!!
you know we do have people in the area that disappear... could it be that someone fell in there... maybe someone should be told about that so it could be searched and then covered up
March 2020 was sad. Everyone has a memory of the day lock down came to town. No school therefore no prom or archery tournament for the kids, and husband's work closed for awhile. Interesting comparison with imminent domain/ lock down
Just a tid-bit. Guard rails, at least in NY state, were renamed guide rails, after a woman sued the state because they didn’t “guard” her from a cliff. So NY Dept of Trans changed their name to guide rails because they are not designed to prevent a violent crash from going through or over them. (Even though they have saved countless lives, they cost a few also). For a similar reason, the ends used to be ended, abruptly, with a metal cap, then they started having a big curled “fist” at the end, now they are bent over and buried in the ground or have those water barrels “protecting” them.
Hi Cliff, every time I hear about the government taking properties by eminent domain, it always turns out that they have this big plan for a dam or something similar but lo and behold they take the properties but never carry out the proposed plan, I think that's disgusting. It's so cool looking for signs of what once was in the area and also looking at old historical photographs, if you find any photo's of this type of video could you perhaps include them ??. Thank you for sharing, much love. xx 💜
