Spanish ranks as the second most spoken language in the U.S., and despite Christina having taken Spanish classes in high school, It took the mention of the word "pizza" for her to realize that Giulia wasn't Spanish. I don't understand why they bother to teach other languages if the retention level is so low.
This is absolutely true. You would expect her to get something right with some of the major languages, at least. Dont get me wrong i believe she is a nice person, but she seems to be absolutely clueless to the point you have to ask yourself what actually the point is
@@wonderlandian8465 even so, she would have never been able to talk with that accent so she's probaby half-Cypriot half-Ukrainian and she simply said that she's from Greece bc why whould an average American know about Cyprus right?
I have taken classes in Spanish and Italian and I get the two mixed up all the time. 3 years of Spanish in high school and one semester of Italian in college. Since most of the words are of the same origin, when guessing I rely on the accent which makes it hard because both languages have many accents. I'm learning German right now so that one was easy for me. I picked out the Dutch easily because it sounds like German but with that "j" sound and more nasally vowels, but I couldn't narrow it down between Belgium and the Netherlands until she named her country's famous foods. The only one I did not get right was Greece, I have so little exposure to it that I had no idea what to listen for (other than "helle"). All of my education in Greek and Roman history used Latinized terms for everything, especially because so much of it was in Latin class.
At this point the show has to make it clear to the guesser if we're guessing just the language or the nationality. Because in Europe, there are a good number of countries with multiple official languages while some just share the same national language. Like a person speaking French might not be from France, a person speaking Dutch might not be from the Netherlands etc. Countries like Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Luxembourg definitely make the guessing much harder 😂. Of course the European natives may argue that there are different dialects, regional accents, different pronunciation of words or choice of vocab that they can pick up and use to distinguish the different countries. But for a complete beginner to the language, or for a foreigner, we definitely struggle to identity the language itself let's not talk about accents. 🤣
Except americans have no excuse except for ignorance why they wouldn't catch nearly every european language. Just the national crossovers can throw you off. Not knowing which general language family you're hearing is embarrassing.
I believe she found it difficult to guess Greece because of the slight accent of the girl . He was saying everything correctly, don’t get me wrong , but she had a slight accent which made it sound a bit different than usual
Judging by the fact that it took for the Italian girl to mention "pizza" to finally get it (let alone the German fiasco), I dont think the accent was the problem here.
Plus Belgium can be a trickster as they have 3 official languages (Dutch, German, French), but one thing that makes it different to Dutch to me is that Belgians pronounce 'g' a lot softer than those from the Netherlands
the last one would have basically been just a big WTF from me. i mean she has an accent(as some in comments pointed out). usually Greek can be spotted by the fact that it sounds Spanish but the words are in no way similar to other European languages. the rest were easy enough. it took me suprisingly long(ok, 2 scentences) to spot German. i mean Spanish can be a bit confusing since there are languages in Spain that sound like Spanish but aren't Spanish and a whole lot of country in South America that also speak Spanish.
I will correct you in the phrase you say "no way similar to other European Languages". Greek, Latin, Slavic, and Germanic are the predominant European branches that created the Languages. Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and some French come from Latin, for example. But all languages, including English, have a bunch of Greek words in their vocabulary, and some of them are not only for academic purposes. I believe that if she was speaking with a typical Greek accent, you would understand her immediately.
@@gecko3890 Greek is its own language family and while some words in English do come from Greek(since they basically invented some of the things they describe), far more words in English come from Romance languages like Spanish(and maybe French). so an English speaker would recognise more words in a Spanish scentence than they would in a Greek scentence.
Finally after two thousand hundred years, they have a Greek represent from Greece, what a beautiful language and country!. 😍 Η Ελλάδα είναι όμορφη και έχει καλό φαγητό!
The producers threw a curveball with Greece. She has a very unique accent, from Cyprus. Most foreigners would not guess that she is speaking Greek. Fun fact: The Cypriot dialect is much closer to ancient Greek than regular Greek from Greece is. Same goes for Pontic Greek (now Turkey) and Griko/Greco (now Italy).
Many US citizens are used to the accent of Latino-American countries, they have never heard proper Castillian speakers with their specific sounds that don't exist in Mexico or other places like these.

New members, cool! But please, can you do more countries? I have actually learned spanish "hola, me llamo ... " and if someone randomly speaks this to me, I would find this out within a second. Do more countries which haven't been explored yet or have participated in videos very little. Good tries, Christina! You’d think she’d recognise Greek and I guess Italian as a lot of English comes from Greek as well as Latin… the rest are all common ones lol
Since the video is about nationality and not ethnicity, the girl speaking Greek is definitely not Greek, but Cypriot. Her accent is 100% Cypriot, as well as her name. Ellada is very popular in Cyprus but I've never met anyone in Greece with this name.
My friend for us the brothers of Cyprus are Greeks also like the others places in Greece have their accent,of course is different state but the same nation
@@ΒαγγεληςΝοτης The title says guess the nationality. In the English language nationality is different from ethnicity. Nationality has to do with your citizenship, the sovereign state's passport you carry. Greeks and Greek Cypriots, share the same ethnicity but not the same nationality. Read my comment carefully, it starts with "since the video is about nationality and not ethnicity", which means that I know that Greeks and Greek-Cypriots belong in the same ethnic group.
Ellada is also a very common Pontian name, she herself said she's from Greece so I would assume she's proably not Cypriot. She might be of Pontian refugee heritage, which would explain the accent.
@@katerinaO_o I am Pontian myself from both parents, Ellada is not a common pontian name and her accent is not pontian at all. I'm fluent in pontic Greek dialect, I grew up with two grandmas that had no Greek schooling because they were born in Russia and spoke only pure pontic Greek. This is a Cypriot accent and Ellada is a common name in Cyprus. The only accent that is similar to that is the accent of Archangelos village on Rhodes, but there are no Elladas in Rhodes as well. It is pretty obvious that they said Greece because there was almost 0 chance that an American would know what Cyprus is. I am just stating the obvious, that the girl is Cypriot. No matter how proud and nationalistic a Cypriot can be, still their nationality is not Greek. The video is about nationality and not ethnicity. Is it so difficult for people to understand what I said?

2 and 3) I have relatives in northen Germany, South Netherlands and Belgium so it wasn't hard for me to guess Belgium and Germany
4) I'm Italian, Spanish is so easy to understand
5) I guessed greece only because of Historìa, I studied Greek in school and it popped
If you're Italian, shouldn't your name be Carlo and not Carlos, which is Spanish?
@@lissandrafreljord7913 yeah, the fact is my name is not even carlos, it's just Roberto, I put it there just because it sounded cool 🤣
@@lissandrafreljord7913 Roberto Carlos is a Brazilian football player, clearly, it isn't his real name.
@@lissandrafreljord7913 A lot of italians have spanish names and vice versa
You are Italian and you don't know that greece is called Ellada between greeks?
Spanish ranks as the second most spoken language in the U.S., and despite Christina having taken Spanish classes in high school, It took the mention of the word "pizza" for her to realize that Giulia wasn't Spanish. I don't understand why they bother to teach other languages if the retention level is so low.
This is absolutely true. You would expect her to get something right with some of the major languages, at least. Dont get me wrong i believe she is a nice person, but she seems to be absolutely clueless to the point you have to ask yourself what actually the point is
The Cypriot girl's pronunciation was so melodic. As a Greek most of the times we don't talk like that LOL
You don’t?
Actually the girl from greece sounds that she is cypriot
She is apparently half Greek and half Ukrainian , probably raised outside of Greece thus her accent when speaking greek.
@@wonderlandian8465 even so, she would have never been able to talk with that accent so she's probaby half-Cypriot half-Ukrainian and she simply said that she's from Greece bc why whould an average American know about Cyprus right?
@@wonderlandian8465She's Cypriot.Cypriot accent,Cypriot name.Period.
As a Greek person her name is so rare and Adorable ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much girlll❤❤
I’m from Greece and this video was amazing!I enjoyed watching it!
Dutch isn't owned by the Netherlands. Dutch isn't a language from Netherlands.
I believe she found it difficult to guess Greece because of the slight accent of the girl . He was saying everything correctly, don’t get me wrong , but she had a slight accent which made it sound a bit different than usual
She’s probably Cypriot.
Judging by the fact that it took for the Italian girl to mention "pizza" to finally get it (let alone the German fiasco), I dont think the accent was the problem here.
She literally didn't know about mousaka or pastitsio so I don't think the pronunciation was the problem really
Italy girl ❤️❤️❤️🇮🇹

I'm totally in love with your channel as I love languages and different cultures ❤
"Moussaka" was some huge hint ... ^_^
Giulia is very elegant and sweet!❤
After the video i'm 100% of sure , Belgium is for sure , at least in Europe , the hardest to guess , no one in the channel ever guessed Belgium 😂
Americans don't even know what language is spoken there😂
the show has Belgian people with a very clean accent imo, it's surprising to me how hard it is to guess (for me being a Belgian too).
@@xxstormxx56 I'm American, and we have Belgian immigrants. It really just depends on the person. I've known Belgian people.
I guessed belgium
She said Ellada 20 times, brother, I wonder what country can it be? ROFL

Next time you can make it with very similar languages such as Spanish and then Catalan, for example.
they did it with dutch, german and flemish(belgian dutch)
Catalan sounds less sexy than Spanish but they are quite similar
I've been learning English for a couple years and now I learn German. I just found this channel and it's really, really nice. Congratulations
Finally after two thousand hundred years, they have a Greek represent from Greece, what a beautiful language and country!. 😍
Η Ελλάδα είναι όμορφη και έχει καλό φαγητό!
I understand only greek because im from Greece😌😀
The producers threw a curveball with Greece. She has a very unique accent, from Cyprus. Most foreigners would not guess that she is speaking Greek.
Fun fact: The Cypriot dialect is much closer to ancient Greek than regular Greek from Greece is.
Same goes for Pontic Greek (now Turkey) and Griko/Greco (now Italy).
She couldn't understand Italian, UNREAL!
Judging from her accent, Ellada is probably from Cyprus (δεν θα το πιστευα ποτε οτι μια τετοια προταση θα έβγαζε νόημα)
I recognise Greek amongst other languages. The phonetic is similar to Spanish from Spain

Counties where people are so proud, full of pride, they have difficulties to integrate the other languages especially US. She said she is familiar with german she could recognize eins, zwei and drei ? But it is normal she tries at least
She said she was more used to German and when the German spoke the language, she didn’t get it!
Last girl was from Cyprus…. 😌
New members, cool! But please, can you do more countries? I have actually learned spanish "hola, me llamo ... " and if someone randomly speaks this to me, I would find this out within a second. Do more countries which haven't been explored yet or have participated in videos very little. Like Basque, Turkish, Irish, Icelandic, Slovenian, Hungarian, Albanian, Maltese, Belarussian, Russian, Ukrainian, Slovak, Czech, Bulgarian, Georgian or other non european nations such as Malaysian, Uzbek, Azerbaijani, Persian, Arab, Kazakh, Sri Lankan language (idk how it is called) and so on...
Good tries, Christina!
You’d think she’d recognise Greek and I guess Italian as a lot of English comes from Greek as well as Latin… the rest are all common ones lol
the last girl is from Cyprus🇨🇾
* as a greek, this was actually really funny
"Cosa c'è di famoso nel tuo paese?" "Il cibo". Abbiamo il 70% del patrimonio artistico mondiale e siamo al primo posto per siti UNESCO e siamo famosi per il cibo?
I think the Greek girl is from Cyprus
The Greek girl has a heavy accent, i guess she grow up abroad and not in Greece, her Greek are fine though.
As a greek person i am shocked from the greek girl's name..😮🤔🇬🇷
What a coincidence my name is Ellada too
Americans literally hear Spanish since birth and learn it at school just to confuse it afterward with every other romance language 😂
Always baffling to see Americans struggle to differ between the roman languages, while a European can do that easily.
I'm amazed by the ignorance of this American girl. She didn't know where pasta and pizza come from not to mention that she initially claimed familiarity with the German and French languages and had no idea what the German girl was saying. Utter failure of the American public educational system. The only thing that confused me was the Flemish language of the Belgian girl. Many speak French there, perhaps half or more of the population.
As a Norwegian, I find it puzzling how Dutch could be mistaken for Norwegian. I also find it puzzling how Swedish could be mistaken for German, but less so.
Didn't get your last sentence:)
How German can be mistaken for German?? I think you mean Swedish.
Yes, especially since she said she recognises German.
I think the key part of your statement is "As a Norwegian". Of course you know the difference between northern European/Germanic languages.
For an American whose interest is clearly in Asia, not Europe, it's not puzzling at all.
Europeans can be so...Eurocentric.

I gave myself half a point on the first one because I couldn't decide Italian vs. Portuguese, having not heard them spoken enough, but I narrowed it down to those two with confidence it was one or the other. Otherwise I identified all languages correctly, though it felt a little unfair that a North American was supposed to guess Belgium instead of Netherlands from a girl speaking Dutch by somehow knowing its regional accent.
