Hi, Nisha I just want to thank you for all your videos ( I came across your videos and they are very helpful.) I have a plan and I would love you to be my mentor. I just hope people realise that information that you giving to us worth a lot of money as not a lot of people would teach you how this imports and exports works. Honestly I have a lot of people that do imports and exports for a living and they don’t want to help me. Thanks
Thanks a tonne for your kind comments. Really pleased to hear that you find my videos useful. Yes more than happy to help you. Pls drop me an email to nishamenon@nikasu.com with your queries.
Hi I am a UK accountant, you do not need to register for VAT. The only time you need to register for VAT is if your annual sales exceeds £85,000. This is usually not the case for a start up business. So you don't need to apply for VAT unless your goods/services sold are going to exceed £85k. You can however voluntarily sign up if you wish. The benefits of being VAT registered is that you can claim back VAT on your purchases, eg. if you buy good for your business, like laptop, stock, stationary etc. But you must charge VAT to the customers. Any VAT you have charged, must be paid to HMRC every 3 months from registration. Another benefit of signing up, is that it hides the true size of your business. VAT registered business look more larger/ professional and trust worthy than not VAT registered business. I hope this helps.
The video was very helpful. I have one question which I am looking for an answer to. Hope you are the best person to get advice. I am planning to import a food based drink to the UK. It can be stored at ambient temperature. I do not do any processing. Just importing and selling. Do I need to register in the local council (since I am storing)? I am at a rented place. So that will be difficult. If needed, when registering, what is the process please? Your advice is much appreciated.
Hi Chaturanga Yes, If the business undetakes any storage, preparation, distribution or selling of food, you will need to register with your local authority. Different councils different systems. You could either search online or call them up and ask how to register your food business with them Wish you all the best!
Thankyou so much for making these videos.... Much appreciated.I am planning to do a small scale clothing buiseness, mainly importing and sell in UK, do I need a warehouse space or my home is enough. Do you know
Hi Zamis Choosing the premises is entirely upto you. If you have enough space to keep the products in your home, that will be the best option Wish you all the best!
Hi Arvind The documents are mostly the same. But as it is an animal product, you might need a animal health inspection certificate. Its good to check with freight forwarder too. You can join our FB group UK Importers Hub where you can interact with other Importers and Freight forwarders

Hi Nisha, Thanks for the information, are you able to indicate how much capital one should have to start from a small import business? Thanks in advance.
