  • Climbing is such a varied discipline it can be a total toss up who will win on any given day. Factors such as setting style, injury, and of course nerves are all heavily at play. Nevertheless, one comp climber reigns supreme and Alex thinks there's no reason they won't stay on top in August.

    Go ai mori! Rooting for her to win

    Maybe Janja just loves climbing and doesn't want to be famous. She's the best by a mile - just watch her win and enjoy the moment!

    Alex been really enjoying these podcasts over the last year hope you keep the channel going. That pic of Fitz over your shoulder is mega.
    Good that climbing is in the olympics and hope all the guys entering have fun, but i've gotta admit i'd be more psyched if they mixed it up and instead of the venue they build at Bouget went out to the mountains. I know it would be a break from typical competition settings but there is so many epic routes/boulders in france i think they have missed the boat think they could have done something really unique. Greetings from the Alps/UK.

    The comments about the combined event are spot on - Janja's been knocked off the #1 spot in a few individual events but the chances of Ai or Oriane winning a combined event are pretty slim - I feel like the only competitor who might give Janja a run for her money isn't Natalia............it's Brooke.

      Dunno about that all due respect. Whose WC medal count highe? And by more thsn a couple just saying.
      Team USA & JPN four climbers legit chance for podium but only two spots. And I'd add 4-5 others - at least - real shot standing on either side next to we know who. Hehe i'm already stressed out - this is a STRONG field vying for glory. G/L to all the women.

    Barring injury, Garnbret's odds on for top podium spot easy. Maybe Mori can improve enough on the boulders so the rope wall gives her chance to upset but that a longshot. However, she might not even make finals if the boulder semi goes bad.
    A battle for silver & bronze imho & i'd say 5-6 or even 7-8 have a real chance for them. Looking forward to this for sure.

      It's going to be intense - pressure packed - b/c so many women climbers so fun to cheer for, & absolutely brutal only two other podium places available. I think I'll feel worse for 4th 5th 6th place finishers than I will good for the 2 other medalists.

      Heck, ALL the final 8 group who don't medal, and even the ones who barely miss making it out of semis - this Olympics women's group IS strong; only 3-4 of the 20 who've earned their ticket not realistic chances, (no offense intended just saying ...)
      Going to miss a bunch aren't even there - Stasa Gejo, Jain Kim, Futaba Ito (who finished higher in the OQS than 6 who are in Paris, froze out b/c only 2 spots per country, (which i think unfair but ... "rules is rules."

      I can't see an outcome where Ai doesn't make finals, even if the boulders are very hard. She's an above-average boulderer relative to everyone else competing this year, and she has an enormous advantage in lead

    Womens is such a competitive field rn. After Janja I’m seeing Brooke come in close. If she climbs at peak it could be close

    • @robberthonetcf
      @robberthonetcf Месяц назад

      I don't think so. Brooke can only come close if the boulders are at Brooke's level so she could win by attempts. I think right now the only one that can compete at the same level as Janja is Ai Mori and only on lead. Nobody gets even close to her in boulder when the route setting is hard enough to challenge her.
      In the Olympics I'd love to see a really hard lead route where both Janja and Ai can really show their best performance. It's annoying when both of them top the route and it comes down to either time or previous results.

    Had anyone ever beat Janja in a combined event?... obviously... it's sports... but she dominates BOTH events almost every time... for someone to beat her in a combined event, I don't see it happening

    What would Janja do? Train, train, train, train harder than any human, and then train some more.

    Conversations like this is one of the reasons why the athletes at the apex experience burnout and anxiety... I get it's 'fun' to throw names and predictions, but keep in mind they're humans too.. Imagine people have comparative conversations about you, wouldn't feel too great..
    Makes you wonder why Janja keeps such a low profile despite being one of the biggest names in competition climbing.

    Ai Mori could maybe beat Janja in lead but you forgot to mention the score for boulder and lead is combined. Sorry but Ai is not that good in boulder from what I've seen so the chances she takes gold in this combined event are very slim.

    • @michaelmccluskey2044
      @michaelmccluskey2044 Месяц назад +1

      The scoring could mean that boulder doesn't matter that much. It's stupid system, but the way it's designed, if the boulder round is super hard, then it becomes largely a lead comp (and vice versa). Besides, AI Mori is a really good boulderer. If the jumpy coordination boulder is too hard or too easy, then she can compete.

    I know it's almost unheard of in the US, but not everyone craves media attention and constant self-promotion (going to avoid the more vulgar terminology here). Others need her for clicks and views, not the other way around. The only time she really used her status was to shift focus to an issue that should matter to others >> REDS. Yet nothing really changed, so... Nothing left to prove to anyone.

  • @THVHSYR

    what an unexpected guess 😁 I think of all the other top women, Ai is most likely to be able to beat her

    • @b0604
      @b0604 Месяц назад +8

      Not in this format. Ai is definitely able to compete with Janja in lead, but she's nowhere near Janja's level in bouldering.
