I use to drink sassafras root tea when I was younger. I'm 53 and not dead yet. And I have a 15 year old bottle of vanilla that I just keep adding vodka and beans to. Hmmm yummy.
Nice video - really like visiting a friend on a weeknight. You're giving people who are isolated a sense of socializing which is a sort of public service. BTW: Easy way to prevent iced chunks of peppers is to lay the chopped peppers out on a baking sheet and flash freeze them then put them into bags. I have found that to be the best way to freeze chopped peppers - never stuck together.
I reuse my beans, and use just a few of them, maybe 4 or 5. It works just fine. The first time I made it, I used it after 8 weeks, and it worked fine, too. I do shake the bottle every day. I think everyone's got a bit of a different approach, but what a great thing to be able to have in bulk.Yum!
I am absolutely beyond joyed that I came across your videos. Thank you again. This is exactly what I needed to see and hear to take my gardening to the next step!
Tip from an italian: you don't need to boil tortelino separately if you plan to have sauce....just heat up the sauce/tort add a little water together and it cooks perfectly!
I watched a video on making vanilla and she suggested waiting 18 mos for really good vanilla. I used to wait 3 mos. and use... but I’m gonna try a couple batches spaced out every 3 mos to try it. Just sharing that info
Just a tip. When you get most of the seeds out with a large knife, switch to a spoon because you can more easily get seeds than the meat of the zucchini. Ive found with a knife I loose more meat with a spoon I get more seed and less meat. Love yall!
You guys are so very precious! Thanks for taking us through one of your days. BTW, Todd, you sure can chop! Even I understood your hose discussion. I loved seeing the animals! Rachel, you, as always, shared more knowledge that I will use. Thanks!
I freeze peppers like that also. Green onion and onion to. The only difference though I chop them up then spread it out on a cookie sheet and freeze that for an hour or 1/2 hour then put them in gallon bags. They don’t stick together in the bag. You can do that with cantaloupe to. It’s awesome.
Thank you Todd for not posting the bee attack. White House on the Hill did. It was hard to watch. Their one hive went rogue and they had to exterminate the bad queen. Thanks for the pepper cutting tips. And i just snuck over (in the middle of your video) and bought some vanilla beans. That project is so up my alley. Thanks Rach and Todd.
You two are so cute! I just subscribed after Canuary. I love how you said you don't cook much but yet you love canning and preserving so much, I can so relate. Thanks for showing us how to chop the peppers 🫑!
Yummy. Looks tasty! We had green beans from the garden with dinner tonight. My wife boiled them to cook them, the finished then up in the cast iron skillet with butter and garlic. 😋😋 -Robert
Thanks for sharing and Rachel you have a nice Shape so you can eat what you want., I enjoy you guys so much, the love that you show each other., Sassafras tea ☕️ that’s all I know and File powder is hard to find 5-8-2022👍🏽👍🏽♥️
I do my peppers the same way you do them, dice and put into freezer bag. This year I tried putting them on cookie sheets after dicing them and drying them in front of a fan before putting into bags for the freezer. I thought by drying first I wouldn't have to bang them on the counter to separate them. Waste of time!!!!! They still stick together. 😊
You two are great together. So nice to see. I really like your home. The beautiful moldings and the doors are so pretty. I love Vintage homes. I live in a 1946, 1200 sq ft frame house here in Fort Worth. It’s a cute house, but it doesn’t have those pretty wooden doors and moldings. Blessings always. ♥️♥️♥️
We used to go out and collect sassafras root for my Grandmother to have to make herself sassafras tea. Just another heart warming memory. Sassafras didn't harm her. She passed at the age of 101.
i actually have another trick to "opening" green peppers that i've heard people don't know of. It's the same idea as the knife, but without the up down of it. If you take your thumbs and hold the pepper with your thumbs on top of the stem, push down into the pepper and then pull it apart. Generally you only have one side with the seeds/stem and the other one is clean.
Add more vodka to the bottle when the vanilla is used up. Those beans will give off more extract for more years. You can also use good Kentucky bourbon instead of vodka to make extract.
My siblings used to put butter on bread then on the way to school they would get some of the leaves put them on the bread and have sassafras leaf sandwiches. They absolutely love them
Thanks for the tip on dicing peppers. These routine type videos are some of my favorite. I enjoy seeing you guys working together and enjoying your time together.
Thank you for the bee story!!!...Fall is horrible for beekeepers, the bees are so aggressive. I mow in my jacket, veil, and gloves because the bees will actually come down to my apple tress about 75 feet from their hive and nail me!!...just found you guys last month, love your videos!!
Thanks for taking us along in a day in your life. Todd, you are great with that cleaver......you just fly right through all of those peppers in a jiffy lol
I love this channel. You two inspire me in so many ways. I don't have the energy level of you two, but you teach me how I can be better at harvesting my available food. You show a way of life so many have discarded. Thank you for sharing! 🙂
Where did you get your vanilla? I use it often and a bottle of vodka is probably cheaper than a third of the purchased expensive brands of vanilla extract.
Hi, how are you ? I Just finished my third Bottle of Madagascar Vanilla. I have only been canning for 2 years. Honestly I bought an all American Canner, and I had a jar break inside the Canner, and I haven't used it since. Only used it one time. So now I am thinking I might go ahead and try it again. Yikes !! Anyway I Love your channel and I am Learning a lot more. thank you for all the videos and your time. I will be watching as you inspire me. Thank you. Have a great day. :)
I always struggle chopping green peppers. After watching your tip on cutting and smashing it down and then chopping it! Thank you! Great tip!!!! You guys are awesome and I love your channel!
I love this video! My Dad & I used to go out in the woods and get the sassafras roots and make tea And I would love to have a partner that enjoys kitchen chores and gardening
I do my peppers like that all the time ,when I first put the bag in I leave it filled with air till the peppers are frozen. I walk by and shake them occasionally and then I dont end up with a block of peppers. I squeeze the air out once the peppers are frozen. God Bless 💜
I do enjoy your videos, especially ones like this. It reminds me of chatting to my aunts and cousins while we're all chopping up the veg for a big family dinner (which we've not been able to do all year and I miss it so much!). I core my peppers in the same way and have always been told it's a strange way of doing it, now I feel validated haha. I've not thought about smashing them though, that's a great tip.
I use cheap bourbon to make vanilla extract with. My baked goods are off the chart good with that. Everyone makes comments about wanting to know the secret ingredient. That’s my secret.
Well, you inspired me! I made fermented hot sauce! Turned out delicious! And a double batch of cowgirl candy! Mmmm. Vanilla next, sounds great! 👍 I made a zucchini, basil, feta pie, used a puff pastry base! But I am going to do a bone broth inflammatory diet! 💚 peppers, awesome! Do you sing to your bees? ❤️🐝
Love that your making your own gumbo seasoning!!! Didn't know it had sassafras in it....so cool!...maybe because I don't make much gumbo....lol! Would like a good recipe though....!
Enjoyed this one a lot. Ues the vanilla beans more than once. They won't mine and either will your pocketbook. I would pour your new vanilla in your dark bottle and move the beans to a new Vodka bottle.
Oh my goodness it’s the Michigan Mitten leaf!!!! How cool! Fun video! I always love sharing the time with you guys! I get to work in the kitchen while watching 😃😃😃🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 really enjoy Rachel! ❤️ Kristy in Missouri 😃😁😎
I bought 100 beans (cost $40 in bulk) almost 10 years ago, I just cut the tip off of one end and put them into a large jar and fill with vodka, if you cut one end the vodka soaks into the bean and makes it soft, plump and pliable. If you need vanilla seeds for a recipe like custard or ice cream you just take one out and squeeze down the bean removing the seeds easily, you can put the bean back into the jar or dry it and place into sugar. I remove the extract every 6 months and put it into another bottle then refill the jar with vodka and start over again. The vanilla beans last forever if store in a dark place, never put the beans in the fridge as it will create a white mold. Cheers from Australia.
Just enjoyed this video and happy to subscribe and look forward to more of your videos. So much easier to chop peppers your way and going to make a bottle of vanilla extract. Thank you and God bless from Northern Ireland.v
I love your videos. It is so helpful when you share what you are working on and how you will use it. Now I need to chop peppers to as they are calling for 32 here in va tonight.🥴☺
I have been looking for vanilla beans. I can only find a jar with 2 skimpy little beans in it for $13.99!!! Yikes! Good thing I started a batch last year or Id be in trouble. I havent checked your description box. I hope theres a link for the beans you got. Love the pepper tip. 🥰 Have a great and blessed weekend Rachael!
Saspirilla is so yummy! I made my own vanilla extract with vodka and bourbon. I started mine end of June and baked with the bourbon one for the first time today. SO GOOD! Saved me SO much money for sure, too! I have 3 quart jars going- 1 vodka and 2 bourbon because I love the bake. I just bought a few more beans and added to them. I used Tahitian vanilla.

You can pour more vodka over the old beans and use them again, they're good for more than one batch of extract.

I have heard that Ina Garten's bottle of vanilla is 25 years old!

Your zucchini way easier and not as dangerous as a knife

Great way to chop peppers much faster than the way I have always cut . Homemade vanilla extract is like making Kahlua ! Yum

I was thinking the same thing. I thought it might be a new technique. Glad you weren't injured. Hugs!
Thank you for the video! Those knife skills!!! I would like to hear about the restaurant days!:)) Love the vanilla!
It’s easy peasy to seed the zucchini with the appropriate large spoon. Just dig a tunnel with it.
