I was told when I received orders out of MOS school how lucky I was. The rest of the class were being sent to Okinawa. I never heard of Iwakuni before, but my best days in the Marine Corps was serving on that base. I will never forget being a young Marine in Iwakuni, Japan. I spent a year there until getting orders to Camp Lejuene which wasn't terrible either, but I was sent almost immediately to Iraq. If you're a young Marine and just received orders to Iwakuni just know you won the Marine Corps lottery, and don't spend your time home sick in the barracks. There is nothing better in this world then being a young Marine. Semper Fidelis to all past, present, and future Marines. Sgt. Sullivan 2004-2011. My only disappointment was medically retiring. God bless, and be safe in these current conflicts, and the wars to come.

Jan Mentzer I was there in 56-57. Every thing you say is true. I think of the other marines who never get out of Lejuene or Cherry Point. I went to El Toro in Santa Anna CA. next. I got out before Vietnam. I REALTY HIT THE LOTTERY. Have the Kintai Bridge on my computer and think of my past. Good luck to all.

I spent about 15 months 1956-57. It was a Naval Air Station then. Thinking about my youth. Was in the USMC then. Nothing is familiar except the Kintai Bridge. The roads were full of pot holes. There were taxies and gas rickshaws, a lot of the men had motorcycles. No women or dependents. It looks nice now.

What’s not shown in this video is the greatest PT running course ever experienced while in the Corps. The sea wall - from one end and back - is 3 miles of pure enjoyment.. To the Marines who produced this video - go back and shoot it again. . And put a flower out for Mamasan Hamamoto. (Tell her story and what she means to MCAS Iwakuni and you’ll have a real story)

Mamasan Hamamoto!! I think about her quite frequently. H&MS-12, 1982-85 MOS 6415

Andy Deane MOS 6446 - H&MS 12. 1986-1988 - she was a great tour & travel coordinator for most Marines in AVI as well as ham sandwich hostess! I think of her often as well.

I used to run from block 8 to the seawall, turn right for the short leg near the main gate and run to the JN side and go back. Wearing steel toe safety shoes or combat boots. 48 minutes every Sunday. Semper Fi MAG-12 78/9.

40 years ago I used to run on the seawall. Those flying boats used to land and takeoff on the water. A horn would blow and the fishing boats would hurry out of the way. Semper Fi MAG-12 Paraloft 78/9. I had plenty of "Interaction" with PMO too.

Who leaves out the sea wall when recording video from Iwakuni? I was there from 89-91, I went back on leave for 30 days in 92. I had orders going back when I got out in 93. I loved Iwakuni. Happy birthday, Marines.

I was the MP training NCO in Iwakuni 69-71
. I certainly recall out interaction with MAW the the alerts that took us to the breakwater as mostly A6 that came in with problems. I also got to work joint operations and patrol with the Japanese Police - (different than our world) Climbed Fuji and made good friends with Japanese that in those days provided base security. Charged with handling security measures during Japanese demonstrations courtesy of Jane Fonda and Barbara Bye Also got to spend time with a Japanese family (3 generations in one household) on holidays and visited Japanese spiritual rituals. I will take my time at MCAS Iwakuni to my grave - well, ashes. I loved Japan.

MAG-12, Jan. 63 - 64 … It was a great gift and remains a lifetime of great memories. Interrogator-Translator. Had the additional honor and pleasure of teaching English to Japanese students who, in turn, introduced me to their lively language. Arigato Gozaimasu.
