Thanks to you i only do stainless cannisters now, i just started and did 3 with normal cannisters and that was a drama getting it off. Now i only use stainless and it peels of like a banana!!! That saves al lot of frustration and work!!!Thank you so much!!! Have a great day :-)
Thanks for sharing this experiment. I remember Tim trying stainless for the canister, and the additional step of scaling it with a torch makes a lot of sense.
Thanks Bryson. Yeah especially using a stainless such as 316 or something in that range of chromium content and lack of carbon. It will not weld to your billet. Thanks for watching!
It’s very easy to build but extremely slow and not very powerful. You end up loosing way more steel to scale due to the repeated in and out of the forge so much.
Awesome content. Great information sirSir. Lolololol 💜 the Alec Steele spoof!!! Was prime Thanks for the teaching moment very much 🙏 blessed days sirSir and stay well Crawford out 🧙♂️
LOL Shout out to Alec! Thanks for this info, I am a new blacksmith and I don't know my way around Damascus at all. Much Appreciated. Old Lady trying to learn a new thing. Tim Too? Catching all my favorites. You are worth a sub, My friend.
Thanks Nate! Just waiting on the time to do it. Day job has me hooked up right now but I’ll get on it as soon as I get some time off. Got some more projects in the works too. 😁
Thanks for the tips. I've been trying to make some Canister for a little while now. I keep getting better but so far i have yet to get a good billet. I'll keep trying keep learning and keep watching.
You’re welcome Jim. I’m no pro at it either but it’s getting a little easier for sure. The stainless is the ticket. We can thank Steve Schwarzer for the info. Be sure to follow him on Instagram and Facebook. Thank you for the support!
@@TonySeverioKnives Yeah the Stainless looks like it works great. I haven't had any problem getting the cans off. I've been doing the whiteout trick. My issue has been cracks in the billet. I don't have a press so It's just me and a hammer. Think I'll try to make a real small can and see if that works out better.
Jim Valliere ahh yes big chunks can give you a fit. Usually cracking happens because the steel is getting too cold under the hammer. I work at nearly welding heat most of the process. If it gets under yellow heat put it back in the forge. My press is too small so it forces me to take small bites and heat often. The downside to re-heating so much is loss of steel. But yes keep it yellow to white hot under the hammer. If it’s cherry red it’s too cold. Once the billet is welded good and worked on all sides, it’s not so bad. The billet is thinner and moves with less force. Hope that helps!
Thank you. Yes Steve uses burnt stainless foil. I tried both in the experiment but my can worked better than the foil. However, the can was made with 316l stainless (no carbon) and the foil was 321 or 309. Carbon works against you on a can weld (it wants to weld or stick). So the foil I was using may have caused that. Steve is where I got the idea to use stainless. He’s the man!
LOVE the filler music! Very interested in your press. Is it air powered? I will subscribe and have a look around your channel to see it in more detail. Thanks for the video, I have wondered if sooting the inside of the canister with oxy-acetylene would also help? Have seen some people use Krylon white spray paint instead of correction fluid too. Haven't made Damascus this way yet as my is arm powered but I am going to soon. Have everything to do it with, just haven't yet. Thanks again for this helpful video.
Thanks! This is an old vid and I no longer have that press. It was air over hydraulic. Very slow, slightly effective. I built a 24 ton hydraulic press a while back that is much faster and efficient. Now I just use white spray paint inside the canister and it works perfectly. I haven’t posted a newer canister vid since this one but I do have plans for one soon. Thanks for watching and supporting my channel. 😁
You’re welcome. Yes it will work but it’s a little more difficult. The press with squaring dies presses all four sides of the can at the same time to make the weld. This keeps the powder from possibly shifting and not welding. However I have done it with a hammer before on a smaller can with a hammer. Make sure to let it soak in the forge a bit before you hammer! Thank you for watching, I appreciate he support!
Mike I don’t. I just pack it tight and seal weld it. I don’t know if that’s proper but I’ve seen it done with and without a vent hole. I haven’t had any issues with or welding. Thanks for watching!
I think so. I’ve set the welds with a hand hammer in a canister before. I would start with even light hits. You will feel it compress and solidify under the hammer. I’ve seen Steve Schwarzer do it on a power hammer and he pretty much invented canister welding and using burnt stainless foil.

I need to make me a press like that. It looks simple and seems to work. I have a bunch of scrap Damascus I've been saving for a can👍
It’s very easy to build but extremely slow and not very powerful. You end up loosing way more steel to scale due to the repeated in and out of the forge so much.
That was FANTASTIC!
Thanks Sam!

Thank you very much and you are welcome! Alec is a very talented young man. Love his channel! 🙂
You, sir, have just earned yourself a new subscriber.
Thank you Timothy, I appreciate the support! 😁
Thanks for sharing. Hope to see you at Piney Hills.
Thank you! Wish I could make it!

Ha yes very talented young man with a good spirit, he deserves it. Thank you for the support!
Thanks Tony! I'll try using some stainless steel wrap that used to heat treat
You’re welcome 😁
I was having big trouble with my g10 scales and I just use your technique last week, I had great results. Thanks again
After "its FAnTAsTIC to have you here" i thought "Alec Steele's father!" :D
Haha yeah I just thought I’d have a little fun. Alec is the king of RUclips and “there can be only one!”. 😂
Man that is so cool. Can't wait to get to the cross mosaic video
Thanks Nate! Just waiting on the time to do it. Day job has me hooked up right now but I’ll get on it as soon as I get some time off. Got some more projects in the works too. 😁
@@TonySeverioKnives awesome man. I'll be watching out for em
Thanks!
I just had a thought...
302 stainless is a non-weldable grade. I wonder if anyone has tried using 302 instead?
It would probably work great. I find that the 316L works great however and I have a ton of it. 😁
Great video ! It helped me !
Awesome! Thanks for watching!!

Thanks Scott. 😊
This was great. Liked and subbed
Thank you for the kind words and thank you for the support!
Oh, BY the way, where do you folks get powdered steel and steel beebee's n such?
I have purchased it in a few places but the last place was from Jantz Supply.
LOVE the filler music!

Right audio channel missing.
Thank ya Earl!
Thank you for the info. Going to try the 3/16 stainless can idea with it being scaled. God Bless
Your welcome! Remember that’s it’s grade 316 that I was using but it was like 16 gauge thickness. I really like the non sticking! Thanks for watching.
Also check out the next video where I stack 1085 and 15n20 layers in a can and a forge weld it. The billet falls out of there.
@@TonySeverioKnives . Will do thanks.
Welcome Don
I've never forged before, but it seems like you would want to use the thinnest canister that you can get away with.
There’s a fine line for sure. Too thin and it blows out the ends before it welds. Or you use what you have. 😁
Spray paint the inside of the can with kilz or some other paint containing titanium dioxide white. White out is for the birds!
Paint and white out is for the birds. Use stainless foil. 😉
Thanks for the lesson, haven't tried canister yet and don't have a press, so wondering if it will work OK with a hammer?

Neat.id be interested seeing how your press works.
Sorry I’m just now seeing your comment. I’ll make a short vid of it. I no longer use it since I’ve upgraded but it’s still in the shop.
Thank u for the Video, great info. One question, do you have to drill a vent hole in the end of the can before you place it in the forge ?? Thank u

Hey I think I know someone who knows someone who's brother's cousin's dad got this same press🤣. Hell where them dyes went lol
It’s quite possible! It’s a popular design for sure. 😁
Thank you. I could make good use of this info.
You’re welcome my friend. Thanks for watching.
Can a guy get the same results with a power hammer if he doesn't have a press?
I think so. I’ve set the welds with a hand hammer in a canister before. I would start with even light hits. You will feel it compress and solidify under the hammer. I’ve seen Steve Schwarzer do it on a power hammer and he pretty much invented canister welding and using burnt stainless foil.

Thank you very much!
Fall? Oh you mean Foil. Sorry don't hear too many regional accents in So. Cal. a ton of foreign ones though.
You need to get out a little. 😉. Thanks for watching.
