I taunted happy fun ball in 1991. Since then I've been on the run, jumping from town to town, ending each week walking away down a lonely road while a piano plays a very sad song.

The idea that some private company would immediately try to sell an unknown glowing liquid that fell from space as a children’s toy while its also being used as ordnance in the military is just too funny and somehow realistic.
It sound like something you'd hear in "Robocop".
Dan Ackroyd had a character who sold children's toys like 'Bag O Broken Glass'. It's a long standing tradition.
That is what you got from this? It is clearly mocking the warnings on prescription medicines not some kind of blank statement about private companies or industry.

I didn't have a Happy Fun Ball growing up, but my neighbor Trey did. I was so jealous right up to the day his house and all the occupants disappeared and all that remained was a smoking crater. Sometimes at night, I would hear faint screams emanating from the smoldering pit. Trey also had the first NES on the block and every game on the market it seemed. Lucky Trey. That kid got everything.

@@tejaswoman Oh the prop in the commercial is always better looking than what you get from the store... Come to think of it those kids looked like they're suffering from progeria (nature's cruelest joke), so maybe the warning's entirely valid.

I've been watching SNL for more than twenty years, and "Do not taunt Happy Fun Ball" has been of my favorite lines ever. I found out recently this sketch was written by Jack Handey, which makes sense, since Deep Thoughts was my favorite part of classic SNL.
I wonder if Jack ever got help for his bible sized volume of mental issues or if he's still sublimating them into horror movies disguised as sketch comedy
If you haven't already, check out Handey's novel[la] The Stench of Honolulu ... it's pretty much a book-length version of his particular brand of hilarious insanity, strung together with a ludicrous plot.
I STRONGLY recommend the audio book, since it was read by Jack Handey himself ... it had me laughing to the point of actual tears numerous times during my commute. :-)

Anyone curious about the inspiration for this should look up Super Elastic Plastic Bubble. It was a toy from Wham-O in the 70s and 80s that was plastic goo dissolved in acetone, which kids were expected to inflate into bubbles with a straw. When the acetone evaporated, kids could play with the bubbles. That was the idea anyway, mostly the sticky mess wound up in hair and ruining carpets. Also, kids would often accidentally inhale the acetone when trying to inflate the bubbles, which were VERY difficult to inflate. Imagine Great Stuff expanding foam as a toy kids are supposed to get near thier mouths. Acetone exposure causes many of the symptoms listed, and is in fact similar to many inhalant drugs. It was usually sold together with Wham-O Firetron Superball, which ominously had an atomic logo. Combine the two and you have Happy Fun Ball.
I remember the Super Elastic Plastic Bubble, I tried it but was unimpressed.

Someone just asked what kind of toy 2020 would be, if it was a toy, and I named this.
The Happy Fun Ball is a grenade in Borderlands 3. When thrown, it becomes 8 grenades, which bounce around making the bouncing sound from the advert, until they get close enough to explode on some unfortunate soul.
That's really cool and horrifying at the same time!!
@@maxbrandt6 they also added a squirt gun with a built-in taser. Wet enemies take double shock damage, so the Hyper-Hydrator is quite useful.
I remember a documentary on Discovery Channel long ago that covered military weapons that were in development.
One was a big bouncing ball that was extremely hot.
It would be fired through the window of a building, then bounce around, incinerating everything inside.

I remember my dad showed me this "ad" about 10 years ago, it was so funny back then and still is pretty funny now
I was playing with Happy Fun Ball and it attached itself to my head. When I managed to remove HFB I had a noticeable lack of hair in that spot. Not wanting to be ridiculed by my friends I told them Male Pattern Baldness ran in the family.

Our lttle group would talk about the funniest skits on SNL on Monday in middle school back in the day. This was definitely one of the most discussed. I think we wanted to invent our own Happy Fun Ball. But the moral of this story is "definitely do not taunt Happy Fun Ball."
Same here! This one was uber popular with my high school class.
The second moral of the story is, “Do not invent your own Happy Fun Ball.” Only tragedy, grief, and sorrow could come of that.

It's a parody of a 1970s commercial for the Hoppity Hop (Space Hopper) toy. If you've seen the South Park episode where Randy's balls get swollen and he literally bounces around town on them, that's the music.

Reading the side effects listing of a new drug I've been told to take, but haven't, brought me here. This drug is Happy Fun Ball. It seems no one would take anything of they read the detailed listing for pretty much any pharmaceutical. I think I'll pass on mine.

Every single time I see a medication ad that spends half its time listing the side effects and disclaimers, I think of Happy Fun Ball. I mean this is hilarious, and the first time I saw a real ad do that I thought "there's no way they expect to be taken seriously"...
around this time also (I think) they had a spoof of the then recently released "three blade" razors, and they presented a five-blade razor because 5 blades have to be better! All as a joke. A couple of years afterwards, all the major razor companies were coming out with 5 blade razors. Sometimes they are a bit "too on the nose".

Happy Fun Ball is worth a lot on eBay today...or it would be, if it was legal to ship it within the United States.

Just looked this up for the first time in a long time. I saw SNL last night and the Wing Pit commercial had me thinking of my favorite fake commercials. Almost Pizza is also a top tier one.
The existence of Happy Fun Ball implies the existence of Sad Boring Ball. Sad Boring Ball is just a harmless rock found naturally on Earth. Taunt it all you want. This is funnier when read in Phil Hartman's voice.
