I heard Miyazaki is very against this theory. In several interviews (and the Studio Ghibli documentary) he mentions this movie being inspired by a friends daughter he is close to, and wanting to make an innocent movie to teach her and other children how to grow up while retaining their childlike innocence.
+Rinii i am a subscriber to akidearest as well and seen that theory video but you cannot say it is true judging by the fact of how many people make a video based upon this theory
Wait... Chihiro doesn't remember her own name, she never forgets her own name, in that scene she figures out Haku's true name. Also she doesn't leave the bathhouse by doing that, she leaves it by figuring out which of the pigs are her transformed parents. And No-Face offers his money to EVERYONE, including the male frogmen receptionists. This theory doesn't hold much water in my opinion (Woo bath puns!)
That's what I was thinking...since Yubaba and her patrons are greedy and wasteful, their greed corrupts No Face, who doesn't seem to realize how powerful money is when outside the bath house. That's the irony the customers, (the sprits) come to clean themselves, but Yubaba and her staff only care that they pay well. That's why No Face isn't allowed in the bath house, when exposed to the staff's greed, it brings out the worst in him, which is why he is so surprised that Chihiro/Sen doesn't care about the money, no matter how much he offers her. She just wanted to help him. :) (Kudos on the bath pun, by the way, it got a laugh out of me. :D )
KitsuneHime69 That's also why zaneba claims no-face and tells him to stay with her. He isn't a threat as long as intentions are pure. lol also ***** chihiro does nearly forget her name, when haku givers her those potatoes or ricecakes or w/e, he gives the cloths she wore back to her and it had the birthday card, or moving away card which had her name. "chihiro, thats my name isn't it. I cant believe I almost forgot my own name" -begins to sob furiously.
Are there any sexual services offered at the bath house? Possibly. Is chihiro involved at in it at all? Not at all. There are two female uniform styles: a loose kimono and a pink pants/shirt combo. The kimono-wearing people never do any cleaning, are giggly, and can be seen attending to the bathhouse visitors during their average work day. They could possibly be brothel-ish workers. However, the women wearing the pink pants/shirt combo is only seen cleaning on the usual day. So, the part of this theory saying that the bathhouse might double as a brothel might be true or it might not, but Chihiro is definitely involved in any sort of stuff like that.
I think you just don't want to face facts. imo. I don't know if chihiro was forced to do anything but I do think she was in that sort of place. I would hope that haku would protect her from that work while he was trying to get her home but I don't think it's entirely impossible that she wasn't in a brothel.
shygirl2927 She wasn't. The women in Kimonos were voluptuous, and curvy women, which was a main desire in Edo. By the schedule we see in the movie, the girls in the pink hakama would have no time to be pleasing men. They also sleep in entirely different area from the brothel women.
I think Spirited Away like the game Majoras Mask can be interpreted in many ways and that's what makes it enthralling and timeless. It will always be an all time classic. Also I think Emily and Sapphire should switch. I love them both :)
I agree, many people were telling me "you just refuse to see the truth cause it will "ruin your childhood"". No, I'm not so nostalgic as that.....I was just tired of people thinking OMG, it's anime, and therefore Japanese, and therefore about prostitution! I'm not saying issues of prostitution couldn't have been explored there, but that to jump right to it and ignore the myriad of other issues expressed therein is terrible. What really ruins this theory for me is "Miyazaki said it was about prostitution". Every time I looked it up, it lead me to some guy or girl's unverified blog, and not to a true Miyazaki quote.....so the evidence is moot.....So if I wanted to be fair, I'd give this a 3 out of five, maybe 2.5 at best. (possibly lower if I didn't feel like being nice. But that's just me.) But I found implications of death, learning to grow up, and appreciating things, finding one's true, and even Shinto symbolism and environmentalist themes more likely due to historical evidence and cultural context.
KitsuneHime69 I agree with everything you just said. Nowadays people are quick to jump on a popular opinion just because it's just that rather than do the research for themselves. Saying it's just about one topic and making everything around it point to that topic is ignorant and narrow minded. I think it was her dealing with a myriad of issues, the ones you listed learning to deal with them and overcoming them was the general overture of the movie.
KitsuneHime69 Same here. It is nice to meet someone that has a good head on their shoulders and thinks in the same way I do. There should be more people like you honestly! :)
I think there's something morbidly funny (so, more ironic than actually humorous) about how this video makes us think about children who are abused, and then uses the phrase "3.5 giant babies." ...R.I.P. giant baby #4.
I also never seen the interview online but there are many reference to it. From the small partial interview that were used as reference, the movie is not talking about child prostitution per say even when a lot of reference in the movie refers to the old Japanese bathhouses which are used for prostitution.Like Yubaba, using sen as name, yuna etc etc. From what i can gather is that Miyazaki is talking about the Japanese sex industry and how under age girls are drawn into it. Chichiro are representation of Japanese young girls. No Face represent men's libido who seem to desire younger girls in the sex industry thus can see why No Face always wanting to lure Chihiro with riches. Chihiro's parents represents those who grew up in the boom years of the 80s who's children will never experience in their lifetime (the good life), how easily they are corrupted by easy money. It's about Chihiro growing up in a society when sex becomes a corrupting influence as seen in the bath house setting where all the people are clamoring for No Face's money, how she refuses those easy money despite all her hardship and finally grows up. If you used all the bathhouses reference it does seem like child prostitution but Miyazaki himself said it is referencing to Japanese sex industry and the influence on their young girls.
What if Gaz from Invader Zim is the real downfall of Earth as an invader. We see how brutal she can be. In the episode "Bloaty's Pizza Hog, Gaz almost let's Dib be an guinea pig for Zim if Dr. Membrane didn't tell her Zim had to be there to get pizza. We also see her ruthlessness in the episode (citation needed), Gas tracks down child Iggins and tortured him to surrender the game. On top of that, the episode "Dark Harvest", Gaz said she has a Squetelespooch, an organ only Zim and the Irken race has. She has a hard time looking normal in this society ( whatever normal is in this universe). She could in fact be an invader. I don't have a video camera, so I can't make a video. Plz read this. It took about two weeks to gather information so plz...
Favorite animated movie of all time! I can't believe I've been blindly watching it without picking up on the implications. Thanks for the culture lesson so much!!
I would argue that this is less of a conspiracy, more of a different reading of this film. Miyazaki's films are practically mythological (many are based in mythology in some capacity), so they are all very rich stories that can hold different meanings for different people. Very interesting interpretation of the film, makes a lot of sense. I'm sure there are holes in the theory found in the film, but I do think this is a cool idea. Also, the stripper name joke got an audible laugh out of me.
This is the first theory from these conspiracies that makes sense to me. It doesnt necesassrily mean Jihiro was doing sexual favors in the bathouse or anything of the sort but the entire story could be an allusion to what these girls had to face in real life. Crazy stuff.
I don't know about the theory on spirited away. but I did like to watch how you came up with it all. It still is an all time love of mine, as is all of studio ghibli films. I love how yet make you think about how you see life and how you could if you wanted to change it for the better.
i hope someone can find that quote. this is one of the best constructed theories in a while and if the references are true then it deserves a 4-4.5... if the quote is found, 5. with that said. i can't really complain. you did a good job on this one
:) you guys add an extra angle to the cartoon world, its cool. been wanting to ask" am I the only one that thinks there is something really wrong in the world of Steven Universe ?"
Interesting theory and the proof concerning names is definitely suggestive. I can't say I'm sure that's what Miyazaki intended, but I think it's worth considering as an interpretation.
My god, I'm so moved by knowing this information. I had no idea Chihiro was a metaphore on child prostitution. I mean, it makes total sense. No way all that information would just pass by Mr. Miyazaki's mind.
I hope the theory is right . .. cuz I like the movie but can't figure out the moral of the story at all!!!! The girl wasn't a brat or anything at the beginning . . . and really there was nothing to tell me of her work either in the beginning either way . .. she just simply doing what she feels she needs to do . . . . . so I like this theory because there just simply isn't any reason to this plot other than the spirits are a-holes.
Its a coming of age tale of a girl who had never really had much responsibility. She was thrust into a world of demons and witches while having no one to lean on. Throughout the story, chihiro learns how to stand on her own two feet and to persevere regardless of how the outcome looks. By the end of the movie, she is a strong and independent person who was willing to risk her life to save a friend in need. No child prostitution necessary.... Stupid theories.
Josh Danckert I feel like her "leaning" or being "dependent" is never shown. We get a few minutes of her in the car missing her classmates (which is normal and completely understandable) then thats it. She was being self-ish at all (evident by her not eating the left out food and becoming a pic like her parents). She was independent enough to make her own decisions in the beginning. Other than that there really isn't any insight to who she was so growth is very hard to chart in this movie. She learns more about the ghosts and witches ect . . . but that is about it. I really think the theory came from people trying to make sense of it. Love the movie, I just would like a moral or a lesson. We do somewhat get that from the side characters though . . . ..
No evidence of her being dependent? lol, well in the beginning when they were at the entrance to the "theme park", the parents wanted to look and chihiro was refusing to go, but after she saw them advance a small amount "wait for me" comes bellowing out. She does this a few times, indicating her dependency on her parents and the lack of independence. With the majority of the movie to be obviously set in a fantasy setting, im sure the director had little time to develope her personality before actually entering the other world, but thats what i took from it anyway.
Yea, but I figure that is typical behavior for a child her age . . . . I imagine most kids wouldn't have given it a second thought if their parents walked in like it was okay. Maybe I should have said "abnormal dependency"
Toaden K she kindove is a brat in the beginning of the movie. I mean do you hear her whining in the beginning? If I acted like that at that age I would have been punished. That isn't the normal way kids act, that is the action of a brat
I watched the spirited away about week ago and this is my first Japanese anime. I wanted to watch because I was curious about the movie that my kids and my nieces like. I am too old to appreciate/enjoy the anime. But I have learned something from the movie: "You are what you eat": the parents ate like pigs then were turned to pigs. "Honesty and hard work will pay off" "Greedy will end up with bad results" Anyway about the bath house, I don't see anything about the prostitutes activities in movies. In fact in real life a bath house is just a public house/place for bathing. That is it. Maybe only the American mind, who does not know the Japanese culture, can come up with this kind of thought.
I figured the bathhouse was some kind of purgatory where the employees were abiding a tithe by helping other troubled spirits free themselves? You know, thats why Lin was talking about getting on that boat some day? It made a lot of sense to me anyways, I figured I was spot on. I hate it when this happens.
Let's prove it wrong, shouldn't we ? Okey, about quote first, if he said such a thing, there should be proof, otherwise, it's lie, just like how Masashi Kiyamoto said that Itachi could beat Madara (idk if it's true or not, there is no proof). Next, if movie was talking about child prostitution, why would it win an Oscar ? It doesn't make sense, they support children prostitution ? Woah. Third thing is it makes sense, but it's not true, because there is so many things that doesn't go with prostitution and shits; Which just blocks theory away - Many things wouldn't be explained. So yeah, the Anime Movie wasn't about prostitution or anything similar, don't worry. Your childhood was almost ruined. Not while I'm here tho... xD I enjoyed movie, Miyazaki movies are just amazing, and this is one of those ''I hate Anime and Japanese shits''-theories, like one that Totoro was pedophile, both kids died in Castle in the Sky, and that girl was raped in Howl's Moving Castle (not sure about those). So yeah, all are wrong, don't worry. xD
This was my Favorite's Animated Films of all time. but I'm shock that the fact that the Story Theory it much like M.N.T, but this on is Amazing cause it Theory Impressive me to watch it again by making sure.
The prostitution industry is such a good metaphor for the ultimate consumption-- people aren't just consuming inanimate goods, but also EACH OTHER. This film also paints women/girls stuck in the prostitution industry as worthy of respect, and not deserving of the degradation of their identities. The message to girls like Chihiro is that people will try to "buy you" so you need to remember who you are, even if you are stuck in such a degrading situation, and that you are an INDIVIDUAL, not just whatever fake or degrading name that people might give you. Chihiro is forced to grow up so quickly because of her circumstances, but still wins the right of retaining her childhood innocence by the end of the film, as well. This person also makes a good explanation about how Spirited Away is about consumption and identity: ruclips.net/video/xOy1qWpDUl8/видео.html
I absolutely LOVE this movie and the conspiracy is a bit strange, but my childhood wouldn't be ruined if it was. I think it's interesting and the movie is so amazing. If you haven't seen I recommend it with all of my heart 💖
***** i dont see it that way sorry i just feel the personal need to change that sentence, and yes this is the internet they're will always be people who comment things like that
Hayo (is that how you spell his name?) said that he based Chihiro off of a friend's daughter. in that case it would have been odd and i believe a bit inappropriate if Spirited Away was actually about child prostitution. however, this is a really interesting theory and i love theories like this.
Binge watching these videos 1:25 stopped felt too preachy not watching RUclips to feel sad watching for crazy outside the box theories funny videos this is like one of those animal abuse commercials
Am I the only one who gets kinda tired of childhood ruining theories? I’m sorry, but sometimes it’s just really irritating, cause at some point it goes too far in dark. I’m sorry, but most of Studio Ghibli’s movies are about youth. Young girls especially, and have similar messages. While there can be war and eco friendly messages, it never gets that into political commentary. It’s more about friendliness, maturing but not growing up too fast, love and togetherness. Spirited Away seems more about a film about a girl who just needed to grow a pear and have a splash of mysticism and reality so it gets through her head. Respect, friendship, seeing more than herself. They go dark, but not that much. :/ at least, that’s what I think.
Alice Tsukuyo I watched that movie when I was 6 or 7. I started playing in a cardboard box and fell asleep (I can sleep anywhere) Then I had a nightmare that No face was in the box with me, following me around and everything. I ran crying to my mom XD I hate no face. good day
Japan had Yoshiwara, which is what I believe the brothel might have been based on. Food and sex. No Face, as we see, takes no part in the brothel. Instead he takes on the deadly sin of gluttony unlike the rest of the spirits with lust. He was never allowed in the brothel, maybe be cause he tries to help the women? He offers Sen money multiple times, assuming that's what she needs to get out.
This one didn't really ruin my childhood, and neither did the MLP dead girl theory. I never saw Spirited Away 'till age 15, and, seriously, how would I know that in preschool?
Well tbh everyone who reported this theory (like The anime man) said this was true. When the girl i think chihiro? Walks up to the brothel, at the entrance there is a thing that covers half of the entrance. In japan, if you go to a brothel, they do that same thing. So- though you won't believe since... sadly, it's true.
Wasn't there a scene when Chihiro is with the Radish Spirit in the elevator, and they accidentally stop on a floor filled with rooms and the sounds of men murmuring and women giggling? But the Radish Spirit quickly closes the elevator door and we never see it again. So yes, prostitution likely took place there, but Chihiro was in no way involved.
i give it a fricken 4 and a half out of 5! this theory to me is more like a fact. the only reason why im not gonna state is as a fact anymore because you said the quote was never found my miyazaki so.... yeah. ill believe you.... for now.
It is not about child prostitution but I do believe there's a hidden allegory about prostitution that you would need to know the history to ever even know
I heard Miyazaki is very against this theory. Wait... Chihiro doesn't remember her own name, she never forgets her own name, in that scene she figures out Haku's true name. Also she doesn't leave the bathhouse by doing that, she leaves it by figuring out which of the pigs are her transformed parents.

I'm a bit addicted to this channel 💙
YAY ANOTHER CARTOON CONSPIRACY EPISODE CAME OUT❤️❤️❤️ I'm obsessed with this show💙💙💙
I don't know about the theory on spirited away. but I did like to watch how you came up with it all. It still is an all time love of mine, as is all of studio ghibli films. I love how yet make you think about how you see life and how you could if you wanted to change it for the better.
I remember seeing these back in the day as free videos on the Nintendo 3DS e shop
I will never see "Spirited Away" the same way ever again.😫😂
0:57 excuse me miss sapphire...is there something you want to tell us?
next time on cartoon conspiracy: is sapphire a stripper?
i hope someone can find that quote. this is one of the best constructed theories in a while and if the references are true then it deserves a 4-4.5... if the quote is found, 5. with that said. i can't really complain. you did a good job on this one
HOLY SHIT! Damn, this was great, best so far.
"A child being forced to grow up". ...Those words haunt me.
Sapphire's quite lovely. Also this is one of the conspiracies that i've actually heard of before, so yay for finally clearing this up.
Spirited away and House Moving Castle are fantastic movies. I love them a lot.♥️

that makes tons of sense!
I watched the spirited away about week ago and this is my first Japanese anime. I wanted to watch because I was curious about the movie that my kids and my nieces like. I am too old to appreciate/enjoy the anime. But I have learned something from the movie:
"You are what you eat": the parents ate like pigs then were turned to pigs.
"Honesty and hard work will pay off"
"Greedy will end up with bad results"
Anyway about the bath house, I don't see anything about the prostitutes activities in movies. In fact in real life a bath house is just a public house/place for bathing. That is it.
Maybe only the American mind, who does not know the Japanese culture, can come up with this kind of thought.
This is true! I honestly agree with you.
I thought we were talking about old times really really old times. but I don't know anything about this stuff.
0:14 well that escalated quickly
So yeah, all are wrong, don't worry. xD
I thought No Face was lonely and wanted to please Chiro.
Ikr. I thought he was trying to look for a friend since she was so nice to him.. Hes still one of my favorite characters.
This was my Favorite's Animated Films of all time. but I'm shock that the fact that the Story Theory it much like M.N.T, but this on is Amazing cause it Theory Impressive me to watch it again by making sure.
I luv u sapphire! haha, I wish u hosted more things.
She wasn't made to work at the bath house, she did it to save her parents
'Wait, is spirited away about child prostitution?' who wrote this? You deserve a medal for cartoon troll of the year.
I never saw this movie. I always thought it was just something like Little Nemo, but now I'm tempted to watch it because it just sounds so sad.

"Somebody help me!" -Emily 2015
But who is Haku? If it really is like that, is he someone that works there as well as in the movie that Chihiro falls in love with?
Spirited away is the best animated movie ever
In my opinion miyazaki's best movie is Princess Mononoke. Yes roast me alive...
Press 7, 8, 9 while watching. "And appreciate her friend, Haku, giving it 3 1/2 giant babies" OH
WE WANT MORE TOONBUZZ
the actual theory here is sapphire trying to cosplay chihiro or sen in this video
GOD DAMMIT GUYS! Now I need to watch spirited away again
Hayo (is that how you spell his name?) said that he based Chihiro off of a friend's daughter. in that case it would have been odd and i believe a bit inappropriate if Spirited Away was actually about child prostitution. however, this is a really interesting theory and i love theories like this.
My name is Sapphire...
FINALLY now make moar studio Ghibili
Binge watching these videos 1:25 stopped felt too preachy not watching RUclips to feel sad watching for crazy outside the box theories funny videos this is like one of those animal abuse commercials
i have never seen the movie so i cant say either way on this
Am I the only one who gets kinda tired of childhood ruining theories? :/ at least, that’s what I think.
they should do the spongebob: 7 deadly sins conspiracy
YO YO YO ITS SAPHIRE! FROM SNARLED! GUUUURRRLLLL FOUND 'YA!
Hey what do you think that why did you and I want to make a part 2 Spirit away please
Do you like spirited away Yes and no
I fucking loved this movie man this were the good old days
Oh my glob the puppet from from FNaF 2 look like No Face Spirit!!!
Do more sapphire videos please ;)
i do love a good studio ghibli film, along with conspirisy.
I am japanese. Apart of taking your soul, is taking your family name.
Thank you for that. that's very interesting to find out. Christian teaching also say the name is impotent.
if she did the videos more i would actually watch them
No Face is adorable though its my favorite character
Alice Tsukuyo I watched that movie when I was 6 or 7. I started playing in a cardboard box and fell asleep (I can sleep anywhere) Then I had a nightmare that No face was in the box with me, following me around and everything. I ran crying to my mom XD I hate no face. good day
I LOVE No Face too!!! #kaonashiforever
+Pineapple Juice no face isnt that bad... It just depends the way you interpret the movie
Nope, I'm not gonna believe this one. nope. literally one of my fav films from miyazaki and I simply cant
Poor Emily. Being hold capitive in a different room
um... I think the direct Japanese translations are enough evidence to support the idea alone
no, not really.
So technically it's and allegory ?
Wasn't there a scene when Chihiro is with the Radish Spirit in the elevator, and they accidentally stop on a floor filled with rooms and the sounds of men murmuring and women giggling? But the Radish Spirit quickly closes the elevator door and we never see it again.
So yes, prostitution likely took place there, but Chihiro was in no way involved.
0:14 childhood ruined in 3...2...1...
i give it a fricken 4 and a half out of 5! this theory to me is more like a fact. the only reason why im not gonna state is as a fact anymore because you said the quote was never found my miyazaki so.... yeah. ill believe you.... for now.
cool theory
It is not about child prostitution but I do believe there's a hidden allegory about prostitution that you would need to know the history to ever even know
holy shit i haven't seen this movie in such a long time o.o i need to see it again, i remember it being really good.
