There is a few other videos they show actually how the cuff is suppose to be aligned he placed the Stethoscope right under that spot there didn't say that. For people arguing about the proper pressure to pump the cuff up to. This is a neat trick I learned being an EMT, where all we do is take manual blood pressures. Palpate the patient's radial pulse while pumping the cuff. Once you feel the pulse disappear pump the cuff around 20mmhg more and you will know around where their systolic pressure is. This stops the chance of pumping the cuff too low or too high for your patients.
Just learned that trick today. My preceptor said its a neat trick but never use that method unless you need to find the systolic. Because that method lacks getting the diastolic and thats important too. Still cool but not that useful
Sam Damon more important indeed but diastolic can indicate heart disease which is also important as an underlying factor or for patients general awareness. Important to do it properly as there is no point asking/answering questions later about why it wasn’t done if you had the opportunity but weren’t bothered. At least important for baseline
Thank you so much for explaining this. In my pre nursing class, I was told that the first beat was the systolic pressure, and the second beat was the diastolic. I was so confused in lab wondering why I was getting 120/110 lol NOW it makes sense. Diastolic is the last heart thump! Awesome! Thank you! 😀

A few too many inaccuracies for my liking and many other commenters have picked up on one or two... 1. The part that wraps around the arm is a CUFF. For brachial blood pressure, use the diaphragm side. 3. The bell must not be under the cuff. The edge of the diaphragm housing can be. Likewise, don't apply a lot of pressure to hold the stethoscope in place. That can result in inaccurate readings. 4. Open the release valve more gently, letting the air pressure down more slowly to get accurate readings. The needle is moving so far between each pulse in your video, that you'll only get rough readings. 5. Systolic pressure reading is not because of the heart contracting. When the cuff pressure is so high that it squeezes the artery shut, no blood passes to the point where the stethoscope is. As you release the pressure in the cuff, the first sounds indicate that blood is just getting past the cuff for a moment. The heart's maximum output pressure has just exceeded the pressure in the cuff. This happens to occur in early systole. 6. Diastolic pressure is when the cuff pressure has dropped to the lowest pressure that the heart still drives arterial circulation, just before the heart goes into diastole (where the atria begin to refill the ventricles)

You actually do not turn the stethoscope 'on' or 'off.' The larger diaphragm side is normally used for adult patients. The smaller-diameter bell is used for pediatric patients, for maneuvering around bandages, and for carotid assessment. you switch between the two by twisting the connection. This video bugged me to no end.

Marie Wallace, the purpose for going up to 200mm Hg is that it is a starting point for checking blood pressure. This goes to show that when you have a good knowledge of the subject and you are genuinely interested in sharing it you will do a good job explaining how to do it Kudos ... you earned my respect and gratitude!
Thanks for taking it step by step and not skipping over too many points too quickly. Much appreciated! One of the biggest problems with so many "how to" videos is that the instructor often assumes too much knowledge on the part of the listener. He or she has forgotten what it was like to be a total newbie. Occasionally it's even worse. The instructor is more interested in showing off than actually helping newbies understand. One question though. How would one go about taking one's own BP using the same equipment? Any special dos and don'ts?
How beautifully you have to clear all complications which we have to faced while measuring blood pressure.. thank you so much for being here . I'm just in love with your teaching accent 💜💜..
Interesting video. I have been in EMS for 26 years and have never inflated the "Cuff" to an arbitrary number like 200. Your inflate the cuff until you can no longer hear the pulse, depending on the individual that could be 60 for an athlete or 180 or more for someone with CHF. Inflating the cuff more that what is needed in uncomfortable for the patient and could potentially give a false reading.
Merissa if you are a high b.p patient then never use digital apparatus as i always shows 5 to 10 error.Manual apparatus is better and b.p can be controled by taking certain supplements too without medication
Sheesh! These comments are so critical! People are acting like he's their instructor! If this is the way he was TAUGHT how to do a Bp, then that's the person that taught him. He's not our (youtube viewers) teacher and we will NOT get an "f" if we follow or choose not to follow his method! Grain of salt ppl, grain of salt. GOOD JOB ON YOUR VIDEO!
Great video, thanks a million. I just purchased am OMRON self taking manual blood pressure kit for $21 and the instructions are not clear. Thanks to this video I can now go ahead and use it with more confidence. I passed on all the automatic blood pressure monitors because it seems no matter what auto monitor, people complain about their inconsistency in providing accurate readings.

Amazing video previously I watched 5-10 other videos this one is the best Short and clear . We’ll Explained. Thank you so much I couldn’t hear best until I used your method to correct my stethoscope.❤❤❤❤❤
This is a good video for those who are beginners, one thing though, he pumped it all the way up to 200, on a regular BP reading you should pump the BP cuff up 160 or 180 no higher than that unless the patient is having a heart problem than this is when we pump it up to 200 and so forth to see how fast their blood is going.
Not sure why he doesn't palpate the radial to get a systolic estimate. That way you inflate the cuff to 30mmHg higher than their estimation, as opposed to going right up to 200. Also the cuff should be around 5cm above the antecubital fossa, it's too low and their should be no contact with the bell of the stethoscope and the cuff.
I've worked in health care for over 20 years, and except for just starting out, I have never seen any experienced practitioner adhere to those guidelines strictly.
Thank You 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏I really needed this to check my mum's blood pressure at home since we are unable to go to the Doctor due to the lockdown....God Bless ❤🙏
I don't know why, but for some reason this video makes me less anxious when I feel stressed, because the more anxious you are the higher your blood pressure will be.
this helped a lot. I have high blood pressure and me and my parents didn’t know how to really check my blood pressure manually. After watching this video now I know how!
Remember, the diastolic bloodpressure is the pressure between every heartbeat. When the cuff is tightly around your arm at 70, and let's say your diastolic is 60 mmhg - the cuff is creating a "bounce" on the blood during resting. When the cuff pressure go lower then your diastolic, it is no longer affecting the pressure and the blood can flow as usual without being disturbed, and that's why you dont hear anything
Thank god for this, I was lost in class and I have to pass my CNA Skills test in a few weeks and I am so so so nervous I am going to get blood pressure!!
1. It's ok to put a small portion of the diaphragm (bigger part) under the bladder (the cusp) but don't put the whole thing with the bell (the smaller part) under the bladder, your pt is gonna end up with a huge circle mark on their arm, especially if your pumping to 200. 2. If you really want to get good at taking bp, take some in the back of an ambulance, the low rumble of a diesel engine sounds extremely similar to the low frequency of korotkoff sounds, throw in a siren and you become an expert real fast. 3. Don't ever take a bp using the needle bounce instead of sound, it's not the same thing. 4. Don't fake a bp, just retake it. 5. If you're gonna fake a bp, please don't say its 120/80, it's a dead giveaway. 6. Please don't give an odd number with a manual bp, it's impossible to obtain, round up or down. Especially if your faking it. 7. If your a new EMT riding with a medic, TAKE MANUAL vitals, It's easy to cop out and use the lifepack but your selling yourself short, practice!

maxy dany I’m a Vascular Scientist. You pump up to approx 20mmHg above where you first occlude the artery not 180. Itbisbdefferent for everyone. You deflate much slower than he did on the video otherwise you can miss the signal returning particularly if there is irregular heart rate.
This is a really clear demonstration that will be helpful to anyone learning to take blood pressures. I would like to comment on how much you inflate the cuff. A more acurate and safer way to achieve the upper inflation limit is to palpate the radial pulse while inflating. When the radial pulse can no longer be felt take a note of this figure - deflate the cuff. Ask the person to wriggle their fingers then inflate the cuff to the noted level plus 30.After some practice this can be achieved in one inflation.
+Michael Matta Yeah when he said 200 i was like whaaat. We we're taught to got 30 above their normal systolic if it's known, or to palpate the radial pulse and pump the cuff up slowly until the radial pulse is occluded. And then go about 30 above that number.
+Jason Bajena Yeah at least in the UK that's correct. We do +20-30, so for most people pump to 140/150. I'm surprised she wasn't telling him she was in pain!
yeah I study massage therapist dont judge!! im not gay ! hey im 14 they teach me to pump to 200 I tried it three time cause I cant get the blood pressure the guy has alot of stretched marks lolol.

I strongly recommend this program for anyone wanting to lower her or his blood pressure. My blood returned to the normal 120/80 right after pursuing the suggestions on the program.
This is the easiest way for me to do it.. but for my exams they want me to pump 30 above the last beat and then take the reading. Im struggling to learn it this way. Your way is so much easier especially as I have number dyslexia. Thank you.
Gus Parera You're right, Gus. I am a care provider, and I have actually seen BP's in excess of 300 sys. a few times. A very scary situation, and most can't believe that the heart didn't 'explode'. Gods will, I know.
Nice attempt to explain procedure, but this video includes several technical mistakes that will likely result in inaccurate readings. It would be better to revise this video to reflect proper technique or to delete it altogether. The primary mistakes are generalized over-inflation and way too rapid a release of pressure. Teaching people to take their blood pressure reading in this way can result in harmful inaccuracy potentially leading to moral liability associated with complications resulting from misdiagnosis and incorrect treatment based on incorrect readings.
I'm a senior in high school talking an EMT certification course and unfortunately, my teacher says that its incorrect when you base it off of the first and last beat that you hear (systolic/diastolic).The correct way to do this is to look for the first and last time the hand jumps because even as you let pressure go in the cuff you can still hear the heart beat and not get a true b/p reading.
Suscribed becoz i like your explaining method. I buyed a digital bp moniter and its of no use and today buyed the same bp machine that you have in the video.
LOL. I had to go back and listen to that video again. I didn't even notice the first time how he pronounce cuff. But, I sure listened this time where he is saying cusp loud and clear. Maybe he was thinking about his horoscope. LOL
TheSisi786 Thanks for the Video clip! Apologies for the intrusion, I am interested in your opinion. Have you ever tried - Sayerdsan Vein Flow Secret (just google it)? Ive heard some super things about it and my GF at very last removed the blood pressure problem with it.
+Hunter Chasens Agreed here. In the real world (okay, the world of EMS), we don't know what your pressure is going to be 90% of the time (on the first set of vitals, at least). I *always* shoot for 200 on an adult. And there's been plenty of times where the systolic has been 200+ so a few more pumps were needed. I'm with ya on that one!
+SIVA PATEL yeah but then you need to wait a few minutes to get another one by auscultation to insure an accurate reading. Kind of a waste of time, IMO. I just shoot for one or the other, pump to 200 and roll.

While measuring blood pressure the dial goes up and down early but sound in stethoscope comes bit late... So which one to consider for measuring bp
Great video; clear and concise explanation on how to take blood pressure that even a chipmunk could understand!
This goes to show that when you have a good knowledge of the subject and you are genuinely interested in sharing it you will do a good job explaining how to do it
Kudos ... you earned my respect and gratitude!
Lay ur arm extended on flat surface. 7yrs later...and now u know!
I have also been taught that way. I also call it a "cuff" not a "cusp" like the narrator.
@@lizcody1 It is "cuff". There is no such thing as a blood pressure cusp. No idea were he got that, unless it is a regional thing.
maybe a bicuspid
Thanks for explaining this Was like goodnite 200-too tight. In school taught the pulsating version and to add 20-30.
This pandemic have me relying on RUclips to learn this. This video was really helpful, thank you
Merissa if you are a high b.p patient then never use digital apparatus as i always shows 5 to 10 error.Manual apparatus is better and b.p can be controled by taking certain supplements too without medication
Thank you guys so much for this video! I am soon to be an MA and this answered exactly what I've been looking for! thank you again.
Thank you for the support!
Thanks this was helpful review. I was taught to release the valve (turn counterclockwise) a lot more slowly though.
Spring cleaning& found blood pressure cuff..NOW to find stethoscope from last month's cleaning. Random medical equipment makes my blood pressure go up..THANX 4 VID!
Ok, goose bumps like literally...well explained....Thank you so much.
Thank you so much I learn from you more than my class🌸🌺🌸🌺

Thank you so much I needed this video so much because now I have to measure my moms blood pressure and I’m only 12 so this helped alot
Wouldn't it be (slightly) better to use the left arm, since the left brachial artery is closer to the left ventricle?
shut up nerd
Yes, although it doesn’t make a huge difference

I have a doubt regarding how we will estimate baseline systolic using palpatory method.is the radial pulse reappearing area is systolic?
I've worked in health care for over 20 years, and except for just starting out, I have never seen any experienced practitioner adhere to those guidelines strictly.
Great video guys. I love how you spoke about the importance of checking the stethoscope
Holy crap, dude you released the pressure off the sphygmo way too fast, otherwise good video.
Maybe he is just used to do the procedure and can immediately identify the beats in his sleep. My instructor uses the momanometer upside down lol
***** If you release the air too fast you see and hear a much lower pressure than the person really has

Ok now the most important part of this video is...... that fire beat in the background what is it? Anybody know?
+Loreal Gordon no it doesnt coincide with sounds that we interprete. just take 1st sound as systolic and last sound as diastolic.

Thank you! Couldn't find the digital cuff at work today so I had to take BP old school and had no idea how until I found your video.
I don't know why, but for some reason this video makes me less anxious when I feel stressed, because the more anxious you are the higher your blood pressure will be.
leptinwellness.com/high-blood-pressure-exercises-program/
this helped a lot. I have high blood pressure and me and my parents didn’t know how to really check my blood pressure manually. After watching this video now I know how!
Thanks for posting, I am going to be a CNA so I need to know this stuff.
no one cares
Thank you! The simplest video out of all :)
You released the dial way too fast..should be around 2-3 little lines (mmHG) per second

Pumping it to 200 must really hurt.
200 to 220 should be.. Do you ever try it?
feels good to me.
Agreed
Should be pump to 220
But its still ok coz u’ll get a more sound
1:36 “U might think that this person has no pulse” part is funny to me! 😂
Thank you so much for the video. It helped me so much in learning easier on how to take the blood pressure and how to read it as well.

nice help btw.. but the part that pumping until 200 is not quite right to me.. hmm
Most of us go to 180 but in an emergency situation, which EMTs face daily, going up to 200 is best.
Best video ever! Simple and clear! I love it. Thank you so much! 😄

The most i would pump it to is 180 and slowly deflate, But all in all this was a good video.
maxy dany I’m a Vascular Scientist. You pump up to approx 20mmHg above where you first occlude the artery not 180. Itbisbdefferent for everyone. You deflate much slower than he did on the video otherwise you can miss the signal returning particularly if there is irregular heart rate.

3:55 Not sure why it says that the 2nd beat is the diastolic. It's the last beat, going into silence, that is the diastolic.

Great method for lowering blood pressure: MaxHeart.xyz
This is a really clear demonstration that will be helpful to anyone learning to take blood pressures. I would like to comment on how much you inflate the cuff. A more acurate and safer way to achieve the upper inflation limit is to palpate the radial pulse while inflating. When the radial pulse can no longer be felt take a note of this figure - deflate the cuff. Ask the person to wriggle their fingers then inflate the cuff to the noted level plus 30.After some practice this can be achieved in one inflation.
man, thought doing something like this would be s lot easier... this takes some practise to do right eh?!
Thanks for your help today! I took my blood pressure manually today and will practice on my family members also.
Thanks for the help i was having a hard time with this technique
Thank you so much for week i been struggling with this and for the first time i could actually make sense of the thumps and the meter
whoa whoa whoa, 200?!? I was told 160-180
+Michael Matta 200 is pretty high I was told 20-30 above normal systolic which is 130-140mm Hg.
yeah I study massage therapist dont judge!! im not gay ! hey im 14 they teach me to pump to 200 I tried it three time cause I cant get the blood pressure the guy has alot of stretched marks lolol.

This is one of the greatest blood pressure solution I`ve seen MaxHeart.xyz Simple language is used to write it, meaning it is easy to understand and do.
Thank you.
Pumping to 200 is the way to go. on the field of ems you'll get pt's at 180 maybe even higher if there hyper
Gus Parera You're right, Gus. I am a care provider, and I have actually seen BP's in excess of 300 sys. a few times. A very scary situation, and most can't believe that the heart didn't 'explode'. Gods will, I know.
This really helped me in my practical exam today! thank you so much
I recommend people who are interested in knowing how to take a blood pressure to watch a different video. this guy's method is a little off...
Thumps..... it's called a heartbeat dude.... right?
Omg i just understood it now thanks to you! Gonna buy me a stethoscope and bp kit soon and try it out before class
Nice attempt to explain procedure, but this video includes several technical mistakes that will likely result in inaccurate readings. It would be better to revise this video to reflect proper technique or to delete it altogether. The primary mistakes are generalized over-inflation and way too rapid a release of pressure. Teaching people to take their blood pressure reading in this way can result in harmful inaccuracy potentially leading to moral liability associated with complications resulting from misdiagnosis and incorrect treatment based on incorrect readings.

joshrblaylock hi
Yes true, thank you!
You should not put the stethoscope bell between the arm and the cuff.
+Taina Matei then you should argue with textbook writers. I wouldn't.
This error is a classic.

Thank you for such clear and helpful instructions.
You really shouldnt need to go up to 200 if the systolic is going to be 110.
just creates more discomfort for the patient.
dan36920 My instruction manual says to go roughly 50 above your normal reading, in this case it would be roughly 170 for this woman.
+John Mullen take palapatory bp first
+SIVA PATEL yeah but then you need to wait a few minutes to get another one by auscultation to insure an accurate reading. Kind of a waste of time, IMO. I just shoot for one or the other, pump to 200 and roll.

You are supposed to test BP on the left arm
It doesn't matter, you must be an older nurse, lol
Or a DPT grad student, it doesn't matter entirely, but it is preferred on the left
Andy Turner yea I do it on the left side, but theres no significant difference honestly
+Athanasios K The comment was from 7 months ago. However, you want to do blood pressure readings on the left arm since it is closer to the heart.
Very helpful! I was a mess in my anatomy class. Will try again.
