Great demo, thank you, Carl. I have a couple of these lignum vitae crown green bowls, have made a couple of bowls in the past and shall now copy your lead and make a lidded box. Thanks again. David, Blackpool,UK
Really enjoyed meeting you in Seattle! Thanks for your hospitality and holding my son while I signed the mobile shop. Meant to ask you about the grinding jig, but didn't want to take up too much of your time. Hoping to make it down to Portland on the 26th for the opening of a gallery show I have a piece in.
@@CarlJacobson the gallery is called Verum Ultimum. Not entirely sure where in Portland it is, but this is the address: Verum Ultimum 3014 NE Ainsworth Portland, OR 97211
Hi Carl found you by accident but I absolutely love the video. I know nothing about wood turning. Now I know a little bit more. I shall have to see the rest of them. Thank you.
Great video as usual Carl. The piece looks gorgeous. The bowl is weighted so it curves when rolled. It has a white insert at each side and one is dimpled so the player knows the weighted side and curve it in the desired direction. They're used in flat green or crown green bowls. Crown being raised toward the middle. Look forward to the next vid.
Thanks for all the tips! I am a new turner and really appreciated your tips on the finish you used. I really enjoyed the music in the background as well.
Nice work Carl! You've got some sharp tools there as Lignum Vitae is the hardest wood on the planet. In fact, a it will sink in water! Amazing wood & that's a beautiful bowl............. :)
I love turning Lignum Vitae. Some ships, still today even, use this wood for propeller shaft bearings because it self lubricates and repels water. **finishing tip ** if you take a light flame to the piece while it's slowly rotating, its wax like sap boils out and can be polished onto the surface of the piece. This gives it a natural self sustaining finish. Kinda rustic, but very cool.
Wow! Job well done! You continue to amaze me. Those bone or such pieces really made the cake! You did well. (I also liked the numbers on the thing. Good, good job!!
Nice job, Carl. Thanks for the tip on the negative rake cutter. I"ve got some blanks of Lignum Vitae I've been saving for a future project and I was wondering about how it would turn with standard tools. You just saved me some experimenting.
Great looking piece Carl. The blank is not a bocce ball but actually an obsolete Lawn Bowl which is biased on one end. The plugs on the end could be taken out and the bias tampered with therefore making them illegal for use in competition . Just a little info on the blank. Great idea for making gifts for lawn bowlers
Hahahaaaa, Love the intro! Loved your beard, though. It was a treat while it lasted! The box is beautiful. (Almost as beautiful as your smooth face. HeHe) I love lidded wooden boxes, especially with a history. Thank you, Carl.
Great figurine in it, it was a crown green bowl I think and the plugs were to give it biase so as to get the bowl to curve around others on the pitch and they also remove wood for weight, I think !
Watched this one with real interest as I know that wood is supposed to be the hardest (or one of the hardest) - Nice to see the neg rake cutters coming in to their own again! Came out really nice man, great job. The beard is off!! So, back to looking like a teenager again, eh? :D
@@CarlJacobson Ha ha! I know it does take a bit of patience. I bet you find yourself subconsciously going to stroke your now absent beard whenever you're pondering something! That's the worst part of getting rid of it, lol :D
not the hardest that is a misnomer, it is one of the densest wood, and oiliest, it is why they use them as bearings on ship screw shafts, as well on the impeller shafts at hydro-electric dams. Saying that, it turns like butter or butta if you will.

Great job Carl! A friend of mine gave me a couple pieces of Lignum Vitas. His dad worked for the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority and the pieces were used as bearing for some underwater piece of equipment. They are very dense and the texture is pretty neat almost waxy. I'm curious if the bocce ball had the same texture. - Ed
Hum...seems as though some gray is gone. I “thunk” the beard looked good but do realize it can be a hassle taking care of it. As for this turning; only one word can describe. OUTSTANDING!!! I really like this video.
I wonder if wood carving had some kind of correlation with your desire to get rid of the beard... Great project man. It was cool to see how that harder wood turned. The boy and I are gonna mount a pizza cutter in that handle. It was great seeing you both again!
@@CarlJacobson It's getting harder to find the genuine lignum. I know you can still get the regular lignum it's just not as hard as the genuine lignum.
That was really pretty. I was surprised that the shavings were so yellow with the wood looking as dark as it was. Is the walnut oil useable without a lathe? I’ve done some walnut projects, but I don’t turn anything. Thanks for the videos.
Carl Jacobson Thanks. I’ll have to give it a try. I just made a set of dominoes and a box out of walnut. I just made it up as I went, but looks pretty cool.
Hello Carl, how can you differ ivory (the 2 teeth of an elephant) from all other dental/bone material? The 2 big teeth of an elephant grow lenghtwise in the design of a chess board. You have darker and brighter lines of a bit more than 1 mm (1/16 in.), crossing each other in an angle of 90 degrees (visible as squares when the tooth is cut exactly 90 deg of the lenghtwise axis). In all other angles and cuts (diagonal, rounded, etc.) you have these lines crossing each other like a parallelogram. If you don't find crossing lines like a chess board somewhere on the object IT IS NO IVORY. If you have deeper and shallower grooves in the material like in the 1st picture down right (caused by different hardnesses in the structure) the chance that it is some kind of animal bone is high. For a final conclusion I'd need a pic with much higher resolution or having the object in my hand. But here I tend to say: bone.
I love your woodworking, but you are too old to be opening your video like a 15 year old boy on Tiktok, especially considering it's already uncomfortable when they do it...
