Lignum Vitae Wood Carvers Mallet | Woodturning Project
Lignum Vitae is becoming an extremely rare and sought-after wood. It's rock solid and is a firm favourite for woodturners. I've been wanting to make a cavers mallet for some time and considering the shape of the balls, it's very difficult to make anything other than a mallet from them. I've tried to keep the inserts of the bowl's balls intact to add to the finished piece.
Because of the density of the Lignum, they make incredible woodworking mallets that can take a lot of punishment.

Lovely job thanks. I was given a lathe a short time back and more recently a set of bowls, so making a similar mallet will be my first attempt at turning. The handle wood looked much like sheesham jali (indian oak).

you've got to get in there quick mate. make sure you check condition though. I picked up some a few months back and the guy was trying his best to off load them but they had some proper deep cracks running through it so had to step away.

Foe balls, ball balls, bowl balls, what are they?

It is a very dangerous practice to wrap a cloth arms your fingers when polishing on the lathe.

You are absolutely correct. Live and learn, got away with it that time. Don't do this any longer. Thank you for pointing it out

Oh, you use carbide scrapers. You are a scraper and not a wood turner.

Am I a wood Turner? No. Do I enjoy the odd turning to release stress and depression? Yes.
Is your comment constructive or at all important? Nope.

This makes me sad, what a waste.

      A waste of what?

Waste?.. It's repurposing a natural resource which is very hard to find. These Bowls were probably never going to be used for their original purpose ever again.... probably due to their age. But now they have a new life as mallets, which will probably last way past our lifetimes..... Nice Job..........
