"Up and away from you." In 4 years of leatherworking and watching videos, NO ONE has ever told me this information. Thank you so much!
😉
Same here!

Thats why he is KING! 😎
Totally agreed. Great tutorial!
I've watched a lot of these vids as I get started and I've gotta say, this is probably the most thorough and well done I've seen so far. Kudos.
If I can offer a minor bit of feedback, from the perspective of someone just started, one thing I would've liked to learn about in this video is how you deal with corners. Maybe I missed it but I don't think you mentioned that. Also what to do when you've made a full loop along the entire edge of a project with the stitching.
I learned how to saddle stitch from a previous video of yours and it's good to see an updated and extremely beginner friendly video. Looking forward to seeing more of your projects and videos.
Nice! Thanks so much!
Same here, I learned how to saddle stitch using Ryan's original video. It's great seeing a new update. One extra thing I like to do is start in the 3rd or 4th hole and put back stitches at the beginning of my line so that both ends of my stitch line are the same and have some extra strength. I also have a one-prong pricking iron and will use it to open all the holes (insert in each hole and twist it a little) in the sitch line so that I don't have to try to open each hole with the needles as I stitch.
Finally! Someone who explained the stitching techniques of leather! Thank you!
There are several well-produced videos on saddle-stitching, but this one is now at the top. The King, if you will. Nice job and thanks for the great info
One of the best tutorials out there, clear and easy to understand for beginners.
By far the BEST saddle stitch video on You Tube. Your closeups are crisp, unobstructed and very clearly articulated as you're walking us through the lesson. You have exceptional skills in videography. :)
Recently started an odd job with my friend because I was tired of security and I found upholstery. I’ve never been passionate about any craftsmanship but I found something I got the learning bug for it’s been a long time since I felt this way.
That’s an awesome feeling 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Great video Ryan, one thing I learned after ruining every wallet I made in the first few months was you really need a good solid base to hammer your pricking irons on. I was doing mine on a desk with a punching mat and the irons almost always went in at an angle, when I moved to a solid worktop my irons went through straight every time.
You are so honest and passionate about your craft. Thank you 🙏🏼
Great video!
Thanks Parker! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I still have the leather keyholder that I made in craft lessons in 3rd grade (in 1983). The thonging has lasted an amazingly long time, considering that I have taken no kind of care of it whatsoever. You have inspired me to actually investigate sourcing the gear I need for leatherworking. Thank you!
Very open and giving. Thank you for being you.
Thank you for the detailed explanation! I appreciate it when people explain the simple stuff I missed that other people take for granted. Keep making videos!
So much useful information and tips! Many thanks! What is the size of those needles you are using with Thread 138 (#5 vinimo)?
I watched this and finished a project with this technique. Ryan you honestly up'd my stitch game with one vid.
I watched your stuff when i started and a couple years later and you're still teaching me stuff. Love it, keep it coming.
Thanks for the stitching video! It answered a lot of questions I had about pricking irons and thread and also the proper way to stitch and the beautiful outcome of proper stitching. Keep it up! You are a great teacher and a great asset to the beginner and the more advanced leather entrepreneur! I started leatherwork almost a year ago and your videos have been very helpful! My first leather tote is finally completed after many small projects! I’m very happy with the outcome and I couldn’t have done it without you!
That’s great to hear!
Now to put this to the test! I'm making a flap wallet, ordering the thread and needles this week, should be stitching by the end of the following week! Thank you Ryan for all the info, close up, slowed down technical stitching tutorial! Perfect stitching by the way, it looked amazing as it always does in your videos! 🤙🤘✌👍 Peace be with you 🙏!
This was the most informative stitching video I've seen. I honestly ended up learning through trial and error, I've never heard the up and away before, I always use round hole punches, but maybe if I had known that a year ago I would have gone with the diamond chisels.
Thank you for this, it was so much more educational than when you’re silent… I appreciate the commentary and the little tips along the way this was awesome👍
I wanna like this a 1000 more times. Such an simple and clear explanation. Thank you👍🏽👍🏽
Excellent reminder video. Discussing the different types, sizes and thickness of thread and irons is often overlooked in other videos.
I have been looking for a new hobby and you’ve really inspired me to try leatherwork. I appreciate the time and effort you put into your leather and video-craft. Keep up the good work!
For person like myself never done leather work but interested in doing it your a great teacher. Thanks
You are such a natural at communicating. 👍😊
best stitching tut on youtube
Great! I‘m working with leather for a while now, but this ist the best tutorial I know on hand stitching. Finally! No further questions. You should stick to your plan and do that school thing. You are really good at explaining. After 17 years of teaching graphic design, I'm sure, one of the most important thing is, never to forget your own pain points when you started out.
Thanks Peter!
I stitch a bit differently due to arthritis issues, but I have to say that this is the best saddle stitching videos I've seen. Keep up the great videos.
That’s awesome! Whatever works best for you 🙌🏼. Thanks!
Great tutorial! Always great to watch your videos and see the amazing projects you make.
Thanks for the best stitch video I have seen! As a newbie I really appreciate your teaching methods and willingness to share your knowledge! THANK YOU!
I am 57 years old and just started leather craft 5 months ago. This is great teaching and very helpful tips. Some of it I have already learned the hard way. You have definitely filled in the gaps and helped to up my game. Thank you sir.
Great video. One of the best hand stitching vids I’ve watched, and I have watched many. 👍👍👍
Love how much one can learn from your videos. Thank you for this one!
Best lesson in hand stitching. Thank you!

I’ve been watching lots of stitching videos. This is the best. The thanks👊🏼
I have been punching from each side to get a good slanted stitch on both sides because I couldn’t find a good video, this helped so much, I’m 2 minutes in and already up to pace! Thank you so much! God bless
Another awesome training video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Searching for a new hobby i stumbled upon your channel. What a fantastic stuff you make and such great presentation. Thanks for hours of material to look at and for inspiration. Friday i will get some stuff in to start with leathercrafting as well.
Such good content! Thanks for sharing your craft.
I have been binge watching you're channel for a week now and its just awesome, i do believe i could now create my own leather goods just by watching you, but i am going to order a wallet on payday.
I went to the matrix today and learned how to saddlestitch!! Thank you for this knowledge 🙏
I can’t thank you enough for this tutorial.
Beautiful way of stiching.

Perfect!!! Beeen needing this demo.
Lovely Video for saddle Stitch, awesome🥰🥰
Expecting ur video about punching hole tools for beginners 🙏
YAS!!!!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I’ve seen other tutorials but I couldn’t see exactly what they were doing and it left me confused and they didn’t break it down step by step. If you ever decide to teach the trade, I am positive you will have full classes!
This is the first video I was actually able to replicate. Other videos skip tiny details they think are obvious.
You explicitly mentioned:
1) The slanted holes should be up and away from you.
2) Thread both needles on the same piece of thread.
3) Very slowly and carefully showed each step so I could replicate. Which hand, which direction and what order.
Glad it helped!
Great tutorial. Thanks!
Loved this tutorial..thank you for making it 🥰
🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Great lesson. Thx very much!
Thank you so much for this video. I was going to ask you to make it since a while 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Loved this tutorial..thank you!
very good explanation, thanks
Life saver with the book😍
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Fantastic! very easy to follow
How refreshing to see a saddle stitching video where they don't insist that using an awl and making holes as you go along is THE ONLY CORRECT WAY TO SADDLE STITCH. I've been punching holes for years and am sick of purists saying NO, NO, NO, THAT'S ALL WRONG. Thank you for the video and list of sources.
Great tutorial. Thank you.
I had no idea about a needle at both ends of the thread! Great tutorial!
its weirdly satisfying watching this works... I want learn how to do this too
WOW !
Great Job.....Great Lesson.

Glad I could help!
Concise explanation. Thanks.
The little thread looping trick on the needle is genius.
Gracias por todos tus consejos hermano, por trabajar con excelencia y enseñar con excelencia, un gran abrazo desde Argentina, Dios te bendiga grandemente
Very helpful. Thank you
I just finished my first notebook cover. It isn't perfect, but this video showed me the way to do the stitching right. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Que maravilloso arte... muchas gracias!!😍
One of the biggest problems I think beginner crafters face including myself is actually making the holes perfectly in the first place. I assume that many people have "cheaper" chisels where the machining is bad so that once you hammer it in its nearly impossible to get out without damaging the leather to some extent. To fix this just get a wet sandpaper kit (400-1500 I'd say) and sand the whole thing grit by grit, especially the teeth and inside the teeth. Then once your done use some kind of polisher, I used brasso and some chrome polish. Basically this smooths out the teeth so that you can easier hammer it in and especially take it out like how corter does lol. Besides that the line and keeping it vertical and straight just takes practice.
Just make sure when sanding that you're not damaging the shape of the teeth as you can easily turn a diamond chisel to a flat slanted one lol
Or spend a few more dollars on quality tools that will outlast your lifetime.
great tutorial man, thanks
Thank you, bro. Very nice.
Just amazing ❤
Thank you. it was great .
This vid helps alot i just bought a starter kit and some other stuff.thanks
Great tutorial. Would love to see how you hand-sand corners. Might be useful for those of us without corner punches and belt sanders, but are nervous about shredding their corners.
There’s a tip about that in this vid. ruclips.net/video/IsctD86GGoI/видео.html
Gracias por enseñar ,felicitaciones
That was VERY helpful. Thank you!
Glad I could help!
