    Re technique. I note you loop the thread over the needle on the back side. Does this give a better looking stitch on that side? I have Al Stohlmans The Art of Hand Sewing Leather and he doesn't use that loop over but just mentions to always pass the needle through on the same side of the thread with each stitch. Be interested in your thoughts.

    Great video. Thanks. Just out of interest are pricking irons designed to go through leather all the way? I see that pricking irons are tapered, thicker at the top and thinner at the bottom. This means that holes on the backside are smaller than holes on the front side. I am using diamond stitching chisels, which are the same thickness throughout their length. This means that the holes are the same size on both front and back. Which would you recommend?

    • @LittleKingGoods
      @LittleKingGoods  3 года назад

      I really like the Sinabroks. A very clean hole in the front and back. The diamond chisels are terrible. I used them when I first started and it just completely ruins the leather out the backside.

    Do you have some thoughts on when to cut a stitching groove vs just marking a stitching line?

    • @thatguythatdoesstuff7448
      @thatguythatdoesstuff7448 4 года назад +2

      The main purpose of a groove is to protect the stitching if it's subject to abrasion and wear. That's why they groove shoe soles. But, I think it also looks good for the thread to seat into a small groove and to burnish the groove after stitching.
      Something like a wallet benefits from grooving. In and out of the pocket constantly will fray the stitching. I grooved the back of a belt I made, to prevent wear up against denim.

    This is probably a really dumb question (newbie here), but when you said you put a piece of leather between your strap and the punch pad so it doesn't get ruined, what exactly do you mean? How would not having the extra leather ruin the back side?

    • @Alex-gg3qm
      @Alex-gg3qm 3 года назад

      If it's a leather that marks (like using a finger nail on some shoes will do) such as Horween Chromexcel, you'll want a smoother surface like leather b/c the punch board has indentations from the chisels that can mark the leather

  • @mrdobalina3451
    @mrdobalina3451 4 года назад

    I’d suggest overlapping 2 holes when continuing instead of just one. It’s just more consistent if you want perfectly spaced holes. That thread is also too small for those massive holes.

    • @jackmiddleton2080
      @jackmiddleton2080 4 года назад

      I guess that there is a limit to how small a hole can be and still have a needle that can fit through without being so thin that it breaks/bends or catches the thread. And of course the iron itself breaks if the iron prongs are too thin. I am guessing that is actually the major factor. So the best looking stuff I have seen is when you just use the iron for indentation and then hand stab each hole with an awl but that is higher skill than me.

    • @mrdobalina3451
      @mrdobalina3451 4 года назад +1

      Jack Middleton one approach is to use a pricking iron which is designed to slightly penetrate the leather which you then use an awl to go straight through. The other approach is to use a stitching chisel which goes straight through. The more modern irons also act as chisel as in this example. The 4z irons are full stainless and have different sizes for the teeth which are also held in place by an Allen key instead of this tool which is glued into place. For the thickness of leather shown in this video I think he should have use the tool more as a pricking iron than a chisel. The holes look massive but that’s just my opinion.

    The holes look awfully big. I think the prick blade measures 2.2mm. Big hole small thread. I think the KS is narrower. My experience with brass is that the smell transfers to the hands. You only showed the finished front for a moment and then focused on the back. Did you pay for those or were they supplied as payment?

    • @LittleKingGoods
      @LittleKingGoods  5 лет назад +7

      I own both the KS and sinabroks tools. If you have ever used these types of irons that go through the entire piece of leather you will know that the hole on the entry side is always bigger. The KS holes are smaller because the blades are smaller. The blade length on the KS is also shorter. The sinabroks blades are bigger and longer. It really depends on your preference. I love the brass. I haven't noticed any smell. Just like my l'indispensable knife. It patinas very beautifully as well. They both produce a clean look but a different in a few ways. The stitch I find is a little more slanted with the sinabroks because of the wider blades.
      I was sent this tool a while back to try it out and see whether I liked it or not. I was not paid to make this video in any way. Just my thoughts and honest opinion on this tool.

    Hey Ryan, cool video man. Thanks for the skillshare. I was wondering if you could show how you tie it off tho. Keep up the great content.

    I mean, it's less that brass doesn't have to be strong for that application and more that brass has the right kind of strength (tough and malleable vs rigid and brittle)

    I’m so confused I thought pricking irons were only to do just that prick. Then you use an awl to push through ...@sinabroks what is the stitching punch for it seams to me it’s the same???

    • @robynzuin9813
      @robynzuin9813 4 года назад

      Daniel Irvine You are correct. The Sinabroks stitching iron produces a slanted diamond hole. The Sinabroks “stitching iron” - ‘flat’ produces a slit like the original French pricking irons (awl required). Each iron maker seems to be using their own particular terminology for their irons but, at the same time, the terminology; stitching iron, pricking iron, stitching chisel/punch, seems to be used interchangeably between the leathercraft community. Take notice that Sinabroks “stitching irons” use tooth spacing like 3.85mm, whereas, the “stitching irons - ‘flat’ are tooth spaces in even mm, like 2, 4, etc. It took me a few days to make heads or tails of it all.

      Robyn Zuin I email sinabroks and got a reply from the man himself Jin and he said that his pricking irons work so you don’t need an awl they work as a stitching chisel
      But then they make a stitching punch also and I know @littlekinggoods has both the sinabroks stitching punch and pricking irons not sure what one to buy ??

    Awesome video. Love the production value! I am curious however how you get the flat heads in line with your stitch line? With diamond heads you just stick the point into the stitch line. I would think with the flat head irons you place the corner of the chisel tooth on the line - however it would appear you have the stitch line in the centre of the teeth??

    I’m a complete noob but though a pricking iron only pricks a mark and doesn’t go through the leather like a chisel does?

    Hi Ryan, I'm starting up a small leather business and I have watched your videos for a while. You do amazing work and make even better tutorials and I appreciate it. I just ordered my first sinabrok pricks and I was wondering what type of thread you use paired with the sinabroks. I currently use John James needle and tiger thread but I've been having issues with the needles going through the thread and I'm assuming my thread may be to thick.

  • @MrStudzdog

    Not to be "that guy" but you're calling it a pricking iron but using it like a stitching chisel. A pricking iron only marks where the stitches will go then a punch awl is used to complete the hole for the needle. A stitching chisel sometimes called a diamond chisel is for punching completely through the leather for stitching. Sinabroks makes irons, chisels and lacing punches. Hope this was helpful.

  • @billmccaffrey1977

    You are using a pricking iron as a stitching iron. They are not the same. A pricking iron marks the leather, but is not meant to completely pierce the leather - that is done with your AWL. Stitching irons are meant to pierce through. The teeth are shaped different for a pricking iron and a stitching iron. So, which is the Sinabroks, stitching or pricking? Preserve Tradition.
