Governor stresses Gibraltar's red lines have not changed since the start of treaty negotiations

​Sir David Steel has stressed Gibraltar's red lines have not changed since the start of treaty negotiations.
Speaking on Viewpoint, recorded yesterday at the Convent, he rejected any suggestion of a 'diminution of sovereignty', saying the proposal put forward by the UK to the EU is one that works for Gibraltar.
The Governor, who is also responsible for internal security, also batted away concerns about a potential open frontier.

Gibraltar es inglés. España perdió una batalla, y no hemos podido recuperarla de forma agresiva ni pacífica. Pero es cierto que España cede: "La ciudad y el castillo de Gibraltar junto con su puerto, defensas y fortalezas que le pertenecen", nunca cedió sus aguas, la montaña, el espacio aéreo, ni tampoco la zona del aeropuerto, y eso es ilegal. Estas negociaciones no son sobre soberanía, que para empezar, en el mundo moderno es un concepto muy difuso. No hay ningún país 100% soberano, ni siquiera China. Estas negociaciones son sobre temas concretos y prácticos, básicamente sobre dinero. Al gobierno Británico la gente de Gibraltar les importan entre poco y nada, solo les preocupa el valor militar de Gibraltar. Si los llanitos no se abren a compartir sus beneficios con la comarca de Gibraltar, si no ceden, España simplemente debe abandonar las negociaciones y dejar las cosas como están. Fueron ellos, los británicos, quienes quisieron el Brexit, esta vez los llanitos no pueden jugar la carta del victimismo. Un no-acuerdo tambiénm perjudicaría a unos 10.000 trabajadores españoles, es cierto, pero España debe velar los intereses de 49 millones de españoles y la UE por los de 400 millones de europeos. Si la genta de la Línea no encuentra trabajo, que emigre, en muchos polígonos industriales de Castilla, (Burgos, Valladolid) en Aragón, incluso en el Pais Vasco falta mano de obra. Por no hablar de Europa. Trabajo hay, lo que pasa es que no te lo llevan a la puerta de tu casa en la Bahía de Algeciras. Y los Gibraltareños quieren lo mejor de los dos mundos, UK y EU, y eso no puede ser. Si son británicos lo son con todas las consecuencias, para lo bueno y para lo malo.

I have not heard of any plans for this, but any agreement should be put to the people of Gibraltar in a referendum.

I don't think that would be good as there would never be a deal all the older generation and people who don't leave Gibraltar would always vote for a no deal and not think about the young generation or the Gibraltarians who live in Spain

@@aydenthewallace That seems to be pre-judging the nature of the deal. Surely, if the deal was thought to be a good one by the majority of Gibraltarians, the vote would be in favour of it.
This is an issue of such fundamental importance to the people of Gibraltar that it demands they are consulted in a referendum and, clearly, it would be iniquitous for age distribution to be a factor in deciding whether such a referendum should be held.
By the way, since losing EU citizenship, are there many "Gibraltarians who live in Spain"? Loss of EU citizenship made it harder for them to stay in Spain (and within the whole Schengen area), with a maximum stay of 90 days in every 180.

Amazing how dark brown his hair is at his age.... and isn't he kind to open The Convent gardens 3 times a year ? Only 362 days a year it's closed. So kind to us pleb's.

The Governor is a figure head, he doesn’t own The Convent, ask the FCO with regards to the said property and garden, after all, it’s UKGov who owns it.
