How Does Using Paper Help You Fabricate A Quarter Panel?

On this episode i walk you through how to make a basic paper pattern for shaping a model A sedan quarter panel and get all information needed to make the part from scratch. This technique can be used on any part or panel needing to be shaped or fabricated, with using the steps shown in this video. I cover basic lay out, finding shape, laying out for shrinking, identifying radii in the panel, and noting information on your road map for the panel.

This is amazing to me--l am just getting into car body work so half the time l have no ideal what l am looking at but you have explained a lot plus taken much of the novice guess work out of the learning process (for me anyway) and that makes a very complicated process understandable. Very interesting system you have developed. I can see the benefits in that it gives you a set of instructions for how to actually fabricate the panel. A couple things I am not clear on and would appreciate your thoughts -- Thank you:
- iI you have to shrink an area how do you quantify the amount of shrink? In your example you put lines for shrinking but did not indicate the degree at the shrinked edge
- Are the radius measurements adequate versus making a bunch of profile gauges out of chipboard?

there is not an accurate way to quantify the amount of shrink needed to note. you shrink the area and check it to the car, on a buck or with contour gauges.
the radius gauge is more than adequate. if you were to make profile gauges you would essentially doing the same thing that i am doing with my gauge set, except spending additional time making the chip board gauges.

because i am mimicking what the metal needs to do. a tuck in the paper mimics a tuck (shrink in the metal). I only cut when i need to perform a linear stretch.

Great tutorial, at the 17 min mark you outlined a second mark just above the fender lip which I take was the fender lip or flare correct? Nothing extra, all the lines and markings i put on the panel allow me to line it back up later as needed

I have a question. I don't have any kind of power hammer with shrinking dies. I use a harbor freight English wheel, a stump and hammer/bag. Those roughly 10" lines you have traced for the shrink, I think my instinct would be to maybe initiate the various radius on the wheel, form over my knee, and then lay it over the original panel. Then the various areas the panel is touching I'd add stretch so that the non stretch areas are "shrunk". Is your layout and approach because you have the tooling to do such a large amount of shrink? Sometimes I think of it like playing Tetris....as you lower the sheet onto the shape, if it hits, that needs blocking to stretch out. Hope that makes sense.

my lay out works the same for any approach of shaping technique. you would just have to read the map for your skills and equipment. i focus heavy on shrinking due to having the machinery to accurately shrink large amounts of material. if i didnt i would pattern it the same way, just break my approach differently to work with the tools in have. personally i would stump or tucking fork shrink as much as i could and block the rest up, then blend it all out on the wheel if i did have a power hammer
