      Snow in the UK is significant less than 1% of the time, maybe as low as 0.5%. Europe, on the other hand regularly has a good amount of snow.
      If it happens a lot then its worth investing in measures to deal with it: snow chains, winter tyres etc. If your (expensive) set of winter tyres are used so little, they'll out last the car, it makes better financial sense to not buy them and sit around whining on the few occasions you would use them. And if there's 1 thing we Brits have become good at, it's sitting around whining.

      Crazy how the infrastructure isn't made for snow when it's very rare and unpredictable. Poland is known to have snow a lot but still have to warn others... snow is hard to deal with if you don't have it often, just ask Australia.

      I doubt the majority of drivers even consider the use of winter tyres, which are mandatory across most of Europe... :)

      No, face it, England has a problem. You don't get this in the Netherlands, Germany, France, Austria, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, or Czechia.
      They get the same weather, but they at least know how to deal with it without having a traffic meltdown.

    The UK has never been able to handle snow. I remember when I used to live there, the city would be on a standstill with the smallest amount of snow. I think it is time to consult the Canadians...

    • @vacafuega
      @vacafuega 2 года назад +8

      It's about infrastructure. Canada has a lot of snow and cold so it's worth investing in snow equipment, plowers etc. But if it snows for 2 hours every 3-4 years, it's simply not worth investing in the necessary infrastructure to cope with it... and then everything is slowed or stopped for a couple of days until everything returns to normal.

    Here in Sweden we cancel no flights. When winter arrives the pilots take the opportunity to put skis on their landing gear instead of wheels and land on the slopes instead. It's a bit rocky when the pilots do their slalom maneuvers as the passengers scream in terror, but they quickly assure them over the comms that it's all in good spirit in time for the holidays, and they calm right back down.

      For air travel I'm assuming it has more to do with icing than snow. Snow can be cleared. Snow is not a regular event in the UK as it is in other countries, and serious snow is even less common. All those preparations have a cost, and if it's commonly needed it's a waste. I think if Norwegian authorities spent billions on sandstorm preparations there would be questions asked. So it means the UK is less prepared. That doesn't mean unprepared. The UK actually copes fine with the usual amounts of snow. News channels, of whatever flavor, tend to report on the bad news and generally make it sound worse. You can include non-traditional channels, like youtube, in that too. News is generally entertainment rather than information you can use. If the news was "nothing bad happened today and everything is fine" not many would bother watching. Humans - we all rubber neck.

    What I noticed is the first day of a storm a lot of people get hurt slipping on ice, and so on. In Freiburg Germany an emergency clinic was opened just to care for people who were injured. I ride my bike to work all year and I don't ride with spikes. It takes a day or two and the streets are clear, sidewalks are safe and it becomes a pleasure to ride a bike. I think riding in inclement weather toughened my spirit and made me more resistant to everday bullshit, or whatever. I figure I have been through seriously tough bike commutes, 18km one way. I commute now 2km one way and coworkers drive their cars 1km and don't understand why I ride instead of using my car.

      To be fair, they didn't say London Heathrow. They were also including the other London airports. I'm not saying that would push it up to 75 million but statistics usually have a lot of caveats and complexities, so I doubt the numbers are directly comparable. As a thirty second mention on any news channel you are not going to get much of that complexity. They probably did what you probably did and spent five minutes on google.
