    I started making computer music in the 90s with Fasttracker 2, so it's super exciting to see a sequencer that emulates that sort of workflow. This may actually get me into Eurorack now...

    This does look very powerful. I'm sure this has been asked countless times in whatever forum NerdSeq users congregate, but given that sequences have a limit of 64 steps, it seems unnecessary to show the step numbers in pattern view as hexadecimal. Is that perhaps something that can be optionally configured to display in a 10-based scale more intuitive to humans?

    • @xorelectronics
      @xorelectronics  5 лет назад +5

      Yes you can turn on decimal view and the row numbers in the pattern screen are decimal. Also most other values are shown additional in decimal, too.
      In general the hex view makes more sense and humans get used to it after a while :)

    Is there any way to change step numbers starting from 1 instead of 0 and have them be decimal? The workflow looks exactly like what I was looking for but those ancient concepts keep me away from buying the NerdSeq. Is there an option to change those things in the settings?

    • @xorelectronics
      @xorelectronics  4 года назад +1

      You can switch the step numbers to decimal. But always starting at 0. Also most values are shown also in decimal. And beside it looking a bit ancient, it has also a function, so higher values can be used so instead of 0-99 you have 0-255 for a 2 digit field.

      XOR Electronics very nice! Would it be possible to make the first step a 1 in a firmware update or is it too difficult/much?

    • @xorelectronics
      @xorelectronics  4 года назад

      @@VictorSteiner It would be very easy. But the chain behind it would be quite some work. So FX values with jump to steps etx would have be changed as well. (just one example) Since this is not requested by the users so far i also don't see a need for it. Decimal view was indeed requested and so i added it like 2 years ago as an additional view.

      XOR Electronics Thanks again for your answer! I think I could work with it starting at 0, I love the rest of the concept. I just wonder why noone has asked for this before, because if you want to program a normal beat with every other sequencer its step 1, 5, 9 and 13 and here it‘s 0, 4, 8, 12. I think this will drive me nuts for a very long time :D

    • @xorelectronics
      @xorelectronics  4 года назад

      @@VictorSteiner haha... i think the odd numbers are the problem and not the nice straight ones :-) And don't forget, this is not every other sequencer. I'm sure you would get used to it...and talking about beats, just set it to that it highlights every bar, then you don't look to the numbers :)

    I'm wondering why there is such confusing terminology on the unit and in the manual? For example the copy button never copies, it actually pastes - pressing shift+mark twice is the copy command. Also, rather than describing different types of 'delete,' using the standard 'cut, overwrite, erase' terminology would make more sense than having one type of delete that removes notes but not lines and one type of delete that removes lines and the space they occupy. This all makes the manual unnecessarily tedious to read.
    I had to reread through the impulse tracker manual to understand why NERDSEQ is more confusing. I prefer the format of the Impulse Tracker manual which is similar to Ensoniq sampler manuals as well.
    Also, a computer keyboard expansion that allows for customized shortcut key mapping might be a nice addition.

    • @xorelectronics
      @xorelectronics  4 года назад

      They are only 2 buttons available for all the mark/copy/paste/insert/delete functions. And in my opinion naming it mark (since you can mark things but you can also do many other functions than copy/paste etc with it) was the best option here. So the buttons all have multiple functions and one name had to be chosen. As for the manual, i totally agree that it can be improved in many ways. But it can't be compared to the IT manual for example. I am doing this on my own (german, not native english) while many contributors helped with the IT manual.
      As for the keyboard, check the forum for more information about that...

      @@xorelectronics Have you considered having someone pitch in on the manual? I'm sure there are plenty of geeks/fans that would be willing to offer editing and layout work. I agree the mark button works brilliantly, the only confusing part was that the copy button never does any copying. I suppose you can say that it acts upon the copy that is stored in the clipboard, however, most of it's functions are related to pasting from the clipboard not copying to it. There are buttons that get used far less like the NERD/AUTOMATE and SETUP/PROJECT buttons which could be used for more utility functions instead. Having more dedicated sequence and pattern editing buttons would far out weigh having to press multiple buttons to get into global settings menus.
      You've done an absolutely amazing job for just one person, that much is clear. I consider these areas of confusion to be very small critiques to a module that may very well become a classic in eurorack, and I only make these suggestions in the hopes that it does just that.

    • @verifiedpersonae7332
      @verifiedpersonae7332 4 года назад

      @@xorelectronics If you were at all interested, I could possibly do an edit of the manual as is, and sweep for confusing language and mistakes, mark what seems wrong and send you the suggestions. Perhaps I'll just give it a quick run through and see what you think.
      Also, Impulse Tracker was also a one man operation. Created by Jeffrey Lim. It was a freeware program so he never made any money from the effort. Much of the language, layout, and functionality had already been done by previous trackers so the hurdle wasn't as great as trying to apply trackers as a eurorack hardware sequencer.

    • @xorelectronics
      @xorelectronics  4 года назад +1

      @@verifiedpersonae7332 I actually had someone who should work on and maintain the manual 2 years ago...he got the hardware...and then nothing. So i am cured of that i guess. As for the functions of the buttons. Nerd/Automate is quite a lot used. Project/Setup less. But mainly most used functions have direct access. So that is fine and if they are things i can improve here then i do so. The hardware doesn't change and i actually can't think of better ways to access the most important/frequent used stuff than how it is now without adding menu's and submenus (no one is waiting for these with everyday functions).
      And i want to avoid multi-key shortcuts as much as possible.
      I keep improving it and also fill the gaps which might appear with the very few buttons. But even with the on-board buttons, navigating and editing is very fast and good to use.

    Excellent tutorial. Unfortunately, I prefer XOX type sequencers like the Elektron sequencer and this appears to much like putting notes together on a spreadsheet versus a fun live performance tool. I am sure it is good but not a fit for my workflow.
