    James,
It really depends a number of factors
    - the output you want.
    - the ground conditions you are in.
    - the number of knifes you want to use.
    - the hydraulic system on the tractor (load sensing is best as it only pumps oil when needed)
Farmers normally run the F540 from 100hp up. For the F540& F550 I'd say the minimum hp being used in Clare is 100 hp, this really depends on ground conditions, density, chop and output requirements.

sorry back again to wreck your head, can you tell me why ''drop floor'' function is an advantage? i'll explain why i think its not a great idea (even though i know most manufacturers of balers have the same function) because most blokages i meet in the field are, stakes, tynes from rakes or haybobs, stones, concrete blocks, and, oh yes and exhaust from an mf 135. Tis typical West Clare foreign objects like, but when you drop the floor these are gone into the baler, essentially.

Farmers normally run the F540 from 90hp up. For the F540 & F550 I'd say the minimum hp being used in Clare is 100 hp, this really depends on ground conditions, density, chop and output requirements.
