I wonder if my vintage Arco Graphite Motor Oil would clog the endurance filter

Most graphite powder is 2 to 15 microns diameter, so it would pass through the Fram filter at 20 microns. Theoretically anyway.
If you watch his video on the Amsoil filter, this Fram Endurance filter is identical to the Amsoil. All the way down to the wire mesh, louvres, the same style steel end caps, synthetic media, green stamping on the media, the stamped leaf spring in the bottom of the can, anti drain back valve. I wouldn't be surprised if this is a rebadged/repainted Amsoil filter, which is good news.

Other way around man. Amsoil does NOT make anything. It's just a brand. Amsoil contracted with FRAM to make their filters.
@@Jimmy-sj9ny I think Fram, Amsoil, and Royal Purple had Champs contracted with Champs laboratories to make their synthetic oil filters. I know Amsoil does not make their own oil filters, they just put their label on it.
One thing that isn't mentioned, and it would be difficult to make a video on, is flow rate. My dad noticed a significant oil pressure loss with the Fram Ultra on his 1997 Jeep Wrangler 4.0 liter, especially at idle. I switched it to a Wix and all was well.

You are correct.STP had that problems with their filters n the 1970's. The filter was so strong the engine wasnt getting the correct oil flow

I have wondered if super high filtration rates make it a bit harder to pump oil, or even if the filter would spend more time in bypass and not filtering at all.
I use mobile one OF and my oil pressure is always great I use Valvoline full synthetic oil Mostly because it's always available and I try to stick with the same oil

Ive seen a pretty good video by Purolator on the Boss, they seem to do a very good explanation of why they designed it and such.. Another great video, by Pete, AGAIN!!!
I was using the cheaper Guard models from Fram for years with no problems. They seemed better than most of the competition. But now we have more choices. The Guard is around $4. Step up to Ultra at $8 or the new Endurance at $12.50 at my Walmart. All of the prices are good considering the fact that I am trying to protect an $8k engine.
I now use either the Ultra or the Endurance. Both filter at a 99% rate. The big advantage to the Endurance is that it is rated to last longer. But to be honest, I am never leaving a filter on that long.
I once dropped my car off at Pep Boys and they insisted on an oil change. They charged me $150 and used an STP filter. I started having problems shortly. I eventually went back to my normal mechanic and gave him a Fram and Mobil 1 oil. It's been smooth sailing since. Without me even mentioning it my mechanic held the STP filter up and told me to never buy that junk again! I looked it up and it sells for $12.50.
Either will do the job no doubt. I'd buy based on price alone. Endurance appears to be better flowing if that's an issue. 👍
I don't think people should be so quick to automatically assume thicker and more media is automatically better. The Endurance *specifically* is meant for high flow. It has the same excellent filtration rating, so I know I'd prefer it's excellent flow and strong build when I'm driving hard.

Fyi, OG Ultra has/had, excellent flow characteristics. Fram put out the flow specs many times, right at the top. Cost, value, and content, OG media Ultra wins.
Went to Wally world to grab a XG6607 ultra for my bike's 2nd synthetic oil change. I ran the XG Ultra last year & they were on sale & sold out although the app said "in stock" but my WLMT had this new-to-me FE6607 & it was last one, so no choice. I change the bikes oil & filter every season so no worries. My Yamaha Bolt's filter is recessed 75% surrounded by the gear box, horizontally mounted, w/ the top facing the front tire & hard to access. I like the total crinkle finish, Larger gasket and the thicker can since it can see stuff throw up by the front tire. "High flow" is good news as there are a few bikers concerns for slightly more pressure drop with the Ultra. Honestly this 1yo oil still looks new & would be OK using use either the XG or the FE filters.

I'm glad I bought a dozen of the Ultras back in 2018. I'm good to go for the next several years still. I've seen a test report that the OG ultra is 99% even down to 15 microns.

The endurance is higher flow by a long shot, oh, and has plenty of filtration when you start getting down in the 20 and 30 it doesn’t matter anymore. It takes a lot bigger particles than that mess up your engine over a long, long period of time. I’ll take the endurance any day.
About every oil filter, is sufficient in picking up enough particles to where it shouldn’t even be a concern. Next is flow. Which is how I decide on what filter I’m using
I’m way more interested in how quick oil can get to the upper part of my engine
I've gotta give the win to the Ultra. I'm actually quite impressed with build quality. Coming from Fram's orange can filter, (that scared all of us once opened) to this excellent gold can filter. Now... The Endurance (without a doubt in my mind) isn't manufactured by Fram. The blue cans come in one door, get a sticker and a box, then sent right back out another door. All in a days time at that.

Awesome video as always! 25K on any filter just seems very extreme. The engine could run a long time on the bypass if the filter plugged and the car owner held to the 25K drain/replace interval.

I've been using Fram Ultra filters with Pennzoi Platinum full synthetic oil since I bought my used 2012 Ford Mustang V6 with 22K miles on it. No problems so far. I've elected to occasionally (not every change) send oil samples to Blackstone for analysis; takes the guesswork out of engine wear. Over a span of 50K miles, Blackstone reports virtually unchanged contaminants in the oil samples. Good enough for me; I'll stick with the Ultra, though I was disappointed to learn they've eliminated the metal backing on the filter media.

The oil and filters I’ve used on my 2011 dodge avenger have always been different from each change over the last 12 years I’ve owned it. It’s at 240k miles.I usually get the mid-tier filter of whatever brand I happen to choose. When the vehicle was newer I used mostly conventional oil, as it’s aged I mainly use the entry-level synthetic. I’ve always followed the built-in oil life monitor. I’ve seen it alert me as low as 4k miles, up to 8k miles. conventional oil starts to visibly degrade after 7k miles. The car is very high mileage, but I’ve taken good care of it.

I does look very similar to the Amsoil. Likely because it's made by same company making the Amsoil and Royal Purple, Champ Labs. Amsoil folks like to think it uses different media than RP. I think it's the same.
The Main differences the Endurance jumped on the higher price filter bandwagon and is about $4 more in price
Wonder if WM shoppers will pay $4+ more for the extra 5k rating. I'm thinking not.

Great video, Whip! I agree that the endurance is just a gimmick. I had Fram orange of death fail years ago on a 97 Ford explorer. I haven't trusted anything Fram since.I think the OG ultra is a decent filter build, but I would trust a Microguard select or any Napa filter in that price range over any Fram.
Amen on that point. For the same money, (less actually) the Microgard Select is the way to go. This new Endurance is pure marketing.
I was working for FoMoCo from the late 80s-early 90s and any engine that blew up under warranty and had a OCOD on it was removed and put on a pallet and sent to Ford for examination. I removed several 5.0 engines from trucks that the warranty was denied because the OCOD had completely collapsed inside. Since FoMoCo was involved Fram paid for the replacements where the filters were proven to have failed.
More game playing by Fram. They can never go a couple years without coming out with another filter 'range' or tinkering with any of the filter designs. Looks like an OK filter. The frequency that I change oil, any of them would be fine. The last Titanium I bought was $11.49 last month. I'll stick with that, but this FE is OK, however I think the Ultra is still a better deal. Usually when they do this it's to 'economize' on the construction, add some 'features' whether real or necessary, and raise prices to make you think you're 'getting something'. I wonder where they'll place this in their lineup? Probably above the Ultra based on mileage, but then again they place the Ultra above the Titanium.
@@lentzquest I wasn't sure that it was a Walmart exclusive at this point. They have a much larger retail footprint compared to AAP so it might make sense. There is a lot that I like about this filter, the thicker can, the high flow tube, and generally good flow numbers (media quality).
I don't think it 'cost' them anything as far as expenditure to put this filter together. They just used a current production line that they manufactured other 'premium' filters on and combined the best features. There's nothing 'new' or 'innovative' just a combination of a range of existing premium features to fill a need.
While the 'OG' Ultra may be the better media that filter design is OOP (out of production) so it would be better to rate it against the current Fram offerings. I believe currently, or for a while the Titanium used the pink wire backed OG media. But you would really need to check the number. Much of these changes are number application by number. I would give one a try!
I live near a major city and of 8 or 9 Walmart stores in the vicinity only ONE listed the FE8A 'In Stock'. It looks interesting I'll say that. At least a s good as the perpetually out of stock Boss. I'd take one of these over a Boss anyway.

The base plate on the new one looks like pot metal. The metal on the leaf spring looked kinda crappy, too. Great video, keep up the good work.

The OG wire backed Fram Ultras are unavailable now. They replaced the wire backing with I think cellulose. I'm buying the Endurance until the Ultras are wire backed synthetic again.
I know this video is a year old, but I installed a Fram Endurance oil filter on a 2002 Chevy Corvette today ( July 6, 2024) and the first thing I noticed when looking inside it was the lack of the plastic bypass valve. It appears that Fram made some recent changes in it. I’m hoping that you might do a video on one of the new “Endurance “ filters, soon.
What size Fram oil filter does your Corvette take?
FE3506. It is awfully small for a 350 engine. It has an anti drain back valve, but it is all metal “down below” where the plastic bypass valve used to be. I’m thinking that someone watched your video with the light test and likely fixed that problem. Being a high filtration unit I’m sure it has a bypass valve.

Thanks for the link. I opened up the NAPA (WIX) filter that I removed from it and there is no bypass valve in it either. I’d have never guessed. I thought all spin on filters had them. Some do not have anti drain back valves but I thought they all had filter bypass valves.
I won’t use Fram but the older one looks better, more inlet holes, holes in the core and more media. 😊
Endurance looks exactly like royal purple, amsoil, likely pretty much the same made by champion labs I believe. Good filter but for the money I’ll stick with boss filters.
The Endurance would have a higher flow rate than the ultra. Exactly what you would want for a high grade oil as there wouldn't be much particles for the media to trap anyway.

They seem to come out with a New one every 2 or 3 years. LOL
When looking through the microscope, the Endurance seemed to have a much denser network of glass fibers which probably traps a higher percentage of particles and smaller particles although that might plug up more, but the oil should have way less resistance traveling through the louvres. So maybe flow resistance is a wash. So I would use the Endurance on a newer engine and the Ultra on a higher wear engine that has a lot more coked carbon deposits.
i believe the “improvement” in filter media was increased flow with equivalent protection.

Wow! Seems like the Ultra is better. I've always used the ultra and just went to wally world to get one yesterday and noticed the endurance rated for 25,000 miles. Glad I still purchased the Ultra. After seeing this great video I'm going back and get 2 more Ultras for future use. And the Ultras are $4.00 cheaper too!! Many, many thanks again for your incredible informative oil filter videos.

I just change oil and filter when my truck says to which is in the 3500 to 4000 MI range so either of these filters would likely be great.

Could you compare the new FE10575 Fram Endurance to the FS10575 Titanium side by side? Both have the 36 pleats but it would appear the Titanium has the metal crimped seam vs the stitched seam on the endurance. The endurance has the thicker baseplate and wall thickness, less but bigger holes. The titanium has more teardrop holes.
What's interesting is that both have the wire mesh the ultras used to have. However, what's most intriguing is the endurance is advertised as having a fully synthetic material, which appears to be the good stuff from the original ultras. Whereas the titaniums have the synthetic/cellulose hybrid material.
Unfortunately, us Canadians can't get either! The endurance is exclusive to Walmart US (I just checked Canada and it's not listed) and the titanium is exclusive to advance auto parts.
I have a friend heading to New York this or next week, and he's picking me up both the endurance and the titaniums. Apart from that, my only option would be a Purolator Boss here in Canada, as it still has the wire mesh backing.

Was the can ACTUALLY thicker, or could the difference in thickness measured be partially explained by the complete grip coating as indicated on the box? Great video, as always.

I just got 3 fram endurance filters. I like the way it looks so far. I'm surprised they didn't use a metal core with holes on the endurance tho. Favorite core so far is the microgard select which I use for the beater car.
Also surprised the inlit holes aren't like the titanium
Microgard makes great filters.
@Robert Hoffman that they do, but I need the synthetic media for longer oil drain intervals in the denali and fiance honda accord. I run them typically 10-12k miles on High Performance Lubricants no vii oils. Denali gets the euro, and honda gets pcmo being direct injection. Beater car just gets the cheaper oreilly oil and microgard select for 5-6k intervals.
That's because the "Fram" Endurance made by Champ Labs. They've used a louvered tube for many years. Louvers work as well as holes and always many more louver openings in tube than holes. FE, made in US too.
@@jwatt95 Sounds like a plan. I run Pennzoil Ultra Platinum with OEM Denso-manufactured filters in my CX-5 and Camry. I go 6K OCIs, but Blackstone oil analysis says I can easily extend it to 8K miles.
I ran Microgard filters in our Mazda Tribute, which went 190K before we traded it in. Before we did, I pulled the valve cover to do an inspection. Zero varnish and wear on the valvetrain. Good oil, good filters, and proper OCIs are the key to longevity.
@faxmen09 appreciate the knowledge. Didn't know champion made them. It's still a good looking filter. For 12$ ima use it instead of the purolator boss I've been using lately. I also a bigger filter anyway and just the little bit of extra oil needed. Normally it calls for a fram 3506 and I use the 9837. Purolator is 14006 but I use the 25288.
And normally that is the case with being more louvers then holes but the microgard select has a lot of holes and bigger then usual.
The old Fram Ultra doesn't exist anymore. They currently have no wire backing and the media is cellulose with a synthetic sprayed onto it.
That's because this is an old Fram, just trying to show the comparison of the wire backed filters.
I have about half a dozen of those fram Ultras but my car takes the cartridge style filter so there's no can. I would never let a filter go 15 or 20,000 mi for an oil change I change it when the car's computer tells me and it's always around 4,000
I just got some of the endurance ones the new one. My car takes the cartridge style on the cartridge style the endurance has metal where the filters crimped together
i like the endurance center better for flow - the ultra has a small amount of holes in the center - i would like to see a flow test between them - i have been using the ultra forever with good results - if it was the fram endurance vs the premium guard filter the PG for sure, cost is the same - I am using the PG now overall just a better filter - Great videos !

They are not making Ultra like that anymore. Instead of increasing the price they made Ultra worse, keeping the old price and creating a new category. So if you want a top filter from Fram, you have to go with Endurance nowerdays.

Look around on RUclips. There is a particulate filtering test and the Endurance beat the Ultra. Just because the filter material looks lesser quality doesn't mean it's worse.
That endurance is made for a 100% synthetic i would think. Something up the line of Amsoil .. It's also made to have higher flow than the Ultra.

Thanks, Pete! I have been wanting to see the new endurance filter. I have used Fram Ultras in the past, with no issues. The American made and South Korean made Fram filters seem to be their most well made filters. So, now they have Ultra, Endurance and the Advance Auto exclusive Titanium. Which one is really their top tier premium product? Too many choices leads to too much confusion. Personally, I like the inlet holes on the Titanium, because it has more. Just my two cents. Have you dissected a Fram Titanium?

Why didn't I watch your video before I bought the Fram Endurance. Im using full synthetic oil in my car that has a Direct Injection motor and you can get a slight smell of gasoline when you check the oil after its run hard. So I've been trying several oils and filters and seen this at Walmart hoping that it was worth the money ,Well maybe not but it still looked like a decent filter. BTW the one I purchased had a wider gasket like a K&N.
The Fram Endurance is a good filter, but,
direct injection, fuel in oil. Not much an oil filter will do about that.
See what an oil analysis says, you may have to do shorter OCIs

I do not buy oil filters with the "Cheese Grater" holes in the center tube. I think those type restrict oil flow? Correct me if I'm wrong. Great video as always Whip

I think as long as the louvers are opened up there should be no problem with oil flow. Usually there are more louvers than there are holes, such is the case between these two.
Why are you comparing the old ultra when that version isn’t even on the market anymore? You should have compared it to the one that’s on the market right now
Because I'm trying to show that they made the filters better before for less money. I thought companies were supposed to be improving their products. I guess not.

I think these are well-made oil filters, might not be as good as the Old Fram Ultra's but I think this Endurance filter beats the New Fram Ultras. I will probably end up trying one out sooner or later.

Well according to their micron rating, they should do a very good job, better than most oil filters out there.

I wonder if there is an issue with silicon being used for the block seal. Don't seem to see many anymore using it despite the drain back valve being silicon. I like the blue and orange look of the new one. I think the louvers would flow better. The core was my only concern with the XG looking restrictive with the few tiny holes. Probably not enough of a difference to justify cost. But with so many things now days, when the new boxed item arrives, it is suddenly more expensive just because they decide it to cost more. Agree on the tiny holes in the XG core. Louvers are better, as they spread the flow evenly through the media. The XG now without a wire mesh backing, I think would be subject to collapse &/or tearing without the restrictive holes regulating the flow. In fact the Fram chat agent called the core a "screen to help trap more dirt". Lol
That might explain why some of the xtra guard filters are marked down in price. One walmart I stopped at had the xg10575 filter marked down to $7

Ultra better value. Endurance media crumpled when Whip squeezed it, ultra media solid and more of it. Endurance is wasting $$ That could be put towards new oil sooner. I buy the Supertec blue Mp7317 $6 change the oil every 4K the oil stays clean near new.
Endurance media is steel backed, while Ultra currently is not. Ultra WAS steel backed when first introduced, but then the Bait and Switch was applied.

I'm not sure why they call it high-flow, the filter media looked well-made, and no light spots under a microscope pic.
It will be interesting to see what they say about it on their website once it's up there.
I wouldnt use either. I will stick to Purolator One PL30001 for the original FL1A sizing or The shorter New Wal Mart MP Series as soon as they release the MP8 filter. I honestly prefer the Efficiency Cores for better flow rates over holes or louvers.
The fram endurance is the same as the Royal purple oil filter
I'm happy we got something like the original ultra back (full synthetic media) vs a hybrid. Cellulose just effects flow rate, poor dirt holding capability, and older technology.
I don't think the cellulose filter is bad, just think there is better options these days, so the original Ultra impressed me with what it had to offer, and at the price point it did so.
The Endurance looks alright, thicker can, heavier spring, can't say they completely cheaped out on it, but it still looks inferior to the original Ultra even if prices where the same. I got the original Ultra for $7.32 bought it for years, these filters start at $13 at my Walmart. I don't like the louvers, I don't like the blotchy glue, I don't like the lack of filter media.
It just all around seems like an inferior OG Ultra for nearly 200% more. Bad filter, no but would I have taken this over the original Ultra if both where $7.32 today?
Also no, better than nothing, but this just confirms they cheaped out on the new ultra. Made an inferior filter, increased the price slightly, than re-released their new take on original ultra but less cheapened out. Even if it was half the price, I still agree with you, the OG Ultra was a better filter at $7.32
Big John deere 6 cylinder diesel engine in my 45,000 pound excavator. Takes 5 gallons oil. Warren 15/40 oil [Walmart] and a fram standard filter for about 75 hours, then a OEM JD oil filter for another 50 hours. John Deere Lab test says " Oil good to go, continue another 100 hours and retest." Particulate and iron counts very low. Wally's oil and Fram filters are up to all industry standards. Don't really need the new snake oil - it is just job security at Fram for designers and engineers and marketers. Otherwise they would only need to work a few days each month.

They did, this is an older Fram Ultra.
I would go with the Ultra even though it could use more holes punched in the center tube. The base plate on the Endurance looks like the base plate on my Napa Platinum and Wix filters. I think Wix ( Napa Platinum) was the first one to use the screen backed filter media

Wow this on my Camry are totally different. The Ultra does not have a wiring backing and the glue job is really bad. The cartridge type the endurance wins over there.
the endurance is pretty much the same as the old Ultra minus the crimped seams but superior to the new ultra, did the seams of the Endurance come apart easily? was it well crimped? I prefer aving a metal crimp, for the price there is a better option like the Wix XP.

It was crimped pretty well. I dont think it would come apart for regular use. I think it was held together better than some of the glued-seamed filters that I've seen.

Fram lets their marketing team build a filter every now and then. What's old is new and what's new is old.
I prefer a manufacturer that just makes a great filter without all the gimmicks and 25K crap. No Fram for me.

Can you compare this new Fram Synthetic Endurance to the Amsoil, and Royal Purple. I believe theyre all clones of one another produced in the same factory. Could you please use the FramFE2 and Amsoil EA011 part numbers to compare.

I’m using this in my dodge right now. I just changed my oil at 7k miles, and I’m leaving this filter in for a second oil change . It claims to be good for up to 25k miles, so no sense tossing it at only 7.
I don't know if your engine is a Soot/Carbon making machine, but oil filters can get clogged up, making them useless. JMHO, but when you change your oil you should change your oil filter also.
@@WhipCityWrencher oil filters can get clogged up? The one in question is advertised to be good for 25k miles. Even leaving it in for a second oil change only takes it up to 15k.
@@stephenmartinez1 I've opened filters that have had lots of soot/carbon on the media after only 5K miles. I have a video coming out July 19th with a used oil filter that had 5K miles with lots of carbon on it.
@@WhipCityWrencher well of course the oil filter is going to have debris, but the more expensive ones are supposed to be able to filter out a lot more of it, 25k miles worth of engine oil contaminants compared to the cheaper 5k mile ones.

But is it the same material? The thinner shorter material might filter just as good as the thicker longer material we don’t know this there’s quite a few years in between the filter productions and technology.
How about flow? The thinner material may filter better and have higher flow, we’re going by looks and feel here.
I don't think it's the exact same material. Fram claims the micron rating is the same on both filters. JMHO, I would give a better flow rate to the Endurance filter.

I'm not a fan of filter media with screens. I think it restrics the flow too much. I would rather have quality filter media alone and large inlet holes for smooth oil flow.
Your way off base in that thinking
It wouldn't effect oil flow, screen or not. Labs have tested oil filters, their flow rate is something like 30 gallons per min, which is far beyond what a cars oil pump will see.
Also, with synthetic media you get the benefit of a 3D filter, there is larger gaps in between the layers of microglass. This allows for superior flow vs a tradition cellulose filter even at the same filtration efficiency.
The wire backing is purely structural.

Ummmm, no. Screen has no effect on flow. Screen is required on synthetic depth media for support. Surface cellulose or blended media doesn't require backing.
The filter media itself restricts flow 30× more than the screens do! 😂

Did you watch the same video above? it's ridiculous to say the old one is "made better" when it weighs half as much with much thinner metal. More and thicker media that can could even restrict flow doesn't mean "made better". But yes, these mileage claims are all ridiculous and can be ignored, it's a marketing thing they all do now.

Don't know what happened to him but the guy who said everything you ever wanted to know about oil filters is on the Fram web site must be tickled that you reviewed two Fram oil filters. These two filters are light years ahead of the felt endcap lower end Fram filters. At around $13, they compare well with other synthetic media filters like the Wix XP, Napa Platinum and Purolator Boss. With a normal oil change interval, however, all of those are overbuilt and expensive in my opinion. I prefer something like the Purolator One in the middle between the cheap end and the high end.

I use a Purolator Boss on my vehicle, I think they are well-made oil filter.
