That’s very easy to say when you’ve never experienced the absolute crippling hunger, or the nausea that will only go away when you eat something.
I’ve also heard “the baby doesn’t need that many extra calories, they’re so tiny.” Guys… it’s about feeding the baby it’s about *growing* the baby. I was originally trying to be careful about what I ate until my anatomy scan at 20 weeks showed my baby in the 11th percentile, then at the next one 4 weeks later he was at the 12th percentile. The doctor finally explained they were nervous he might go below the 10th percentile. I stopped caring about eating light to stay within my weight range and started increasing my protein and calories. He finally went up to the 17th percentile at 30 weeks. He's still measuring a little small during the fundal measurements, but luckily he's on track. I just want him to be healthy. I have struggled with the fear of gaining too much weight my whole life, but it's worth it for him.
At 18, I dropped down to 99 lbs. I have heard comments from my mother about how gross and boney my shoulders were as a teenager, but then also being told to be careful because it looked like I was a little pudgy. In a previous relationship, my ex told me I needed to lose weight at 118 lbs. It will never matter how thin you are, there will always be a negative person out there to tell you to be thinner and people telling you "you're so skinny" to shame you into eating more. At the end of the day, your health and comfort should be all that matters.

For a while I felt so powerless and stressed, gaining weight SO much faster than I expected! When my son arrived, I weighed 194 lbs, almost exactly the weight I was at when our daughter was born. Only, this time, I had gained a whopping 50+ pounds (vs about 30) the first time around. It felt like my body had a 'memory' of the first pregnancy and the weight at which I gave birth.
To all the pregnant mommas out there: please grant yourself the grace to grow and gain weight while you try your best to eat a healthy diet and be physically active. Being pregnant is tough and we don't need the added stress of shaming ourselves around weight gain. If you're feeling bullied by a doctor, find a new one that can work with you, without judgement, to understand what healthy weight gain looks like for you.

I wouldn’t worry about it. As long as you are eating well and feel well. Your baby should be fine. I’ve had six children already, and I have sometimes gained 40 pounds as well. Your body knows what to do and sometimes gaining weight is part of it, you don’t look obese you look healthy. Just watch your carbs to make sure you’re not gaining excess weight eat lots of meat and fish. Best of luck to you and your pregnancy and your birth giving!

As someone who struggled to eat my last pregnancy (the entire time) I was told “You barely look pregant” or “you’re still so skinny” or after it was over say “you don’t look like you had a baby”. I felt like no one really understands what you go through from your perspective unless they really try and really care. And now when my friends complain about gaining 40-60 with theirs and see that I didn’t gain that much they act like I didn’t have any struggles in pregnancy or even now and I hate it. Don’t assume, don’t judge others without really hearing them out and knowing what they go through and how it feels for them. It took me two years to enjoy food again after pregnancy. And now I’m pregnant again and it’s different so far. I’m way sicker, but also way more hungry all the time and I’m almost 10 weeks and scared of gaining too much but also have to remind myself that I just need to listen to my body and do what’s best for me. Right now, a lot of it is purely survival. What can I stomach today? Hopefully I’ll feel better in the 2nd trimester and be able to eat more carefully but I really only have so much of that luxury right now when I can’t eat certain things or get hungry again after I’ve already eaten something.

People who say “it’s only fluid:” As an OB RN for over 30 years, gaining too much fluid is concerning. It increases your blood pressure, and can cause you to need to deliver your baby early or to have a cesarean, complications, and many more health problems. We are seeing more and more pregnancy & delivery complications from blood pressure, often due to diet. Processed, greasy, or fried foods, as well as starchy or sugary foods are responsible for the vast majority of health issues we see in the hospital, causing diabetes, high blood pressure, & more.

I am a month postpartum. I gained about 45 lbs while pregnant and was told by my doctor I gained too much weight. When I went for a checkup one week after birth I had lost almost thirty pounds! My baby was only 6.6, but I had a ton of amniotic fluid (even my doctor said it was a lot). I get higher weight gain leads to bigger babies but only gaining 25 pounds seems rare after hearing so many other women talk about their weight gain and after my experience. (Oh and of course my mom gained about 15 pounds with me 🙄)

I have two children, and I AGREE WITH THE DOCTOR. There should be no shaming, BUT it was waaaay more uncomfortable with my first one, when I gained 40 lbs. The baby was small, so it didn't affect her. However, I hot many more stretch marks than I would've gotten with a healthy weight, my fert became flat, I wasn't able to exercise, I was super uncomfortable very early, and it took three years to get the weight off. I looked 6 months pregnant even 2 years after...! The bely just never went down properly. I had NOTHING that fit me in terms of clothes.
Second pregnancy I decided that there was NO WAY I would go through the same thing again. Exercised throughout the whole pregnancy, even with pelvic girdle pain, and gained 28 lbs. No additional stretch marka, felt much better, ans my stomach was nearly flat again 1 week after I gave birth. I was in great shape too! After first, It took me 1.5 year to begin to exercise. After my second it tok 1.5 WEEK. Oh, and the weight I had gained during pregnancy disappeared by itself, without me having to do anything.
Telling women they shouldn't be gaining too much is KIND IMO.

When my grandmother had her three kids, women were discouraged from gaining any weight at all. She said the most she gained was 7 pounds. She would lose weight all over her body and just have a giant belly. She said she looked like a toothpick with a cherry tomato in the middle. Her babies weighed more than she gained.

I was very fortunate to never have a single nurse, midwife, or doctor talk about my weight with me. The only thing about my weight was the first ultrasound they mentioned me having a “thicker abdominal wall” so they couldn’t get as accurate of a measurement. the weight gain recommendations are actually given to try ensuring you are healthy throughout pregnancy because of how extreme people have taken the whole "eating for two" thing during pregnancy. PS you were lucky to be given a 25-35lb weight gain allowance. I was given a 5-7kg (11-15lb for all the Americans out there) weight gain for all of my pregnancies. My first I actually LOST 10kg (22lb) over the 40wks. My second I stayed the same weight the whole 37wks). My third I lost 10kg in the entire 8wks I knew I was pregnant before having a miscarriage. With my fourth and final baby I had my first ever gain during pregnancy, a whopping 2kg (4lb) in the first 16wks and then stayed at that weight until 1.5yrs post-partum where I gained weight while being stuck at home during covid lockdowns.

Try not to stress about it for sure. But they also have good reason to be concerned and encourage pumping the breaks on weight gain wherever possible. It is very hard on your body to gain that much weight that quickly and it could mean you have something else going on. And sure it may all fall off you the minute you have your baby. But it very well might not and it could be something you struggle with for a long time. Both are normal. I will say i gained 45ish with my first. 25 with my second. I felt, looked and recovered so much better with my second. He was a whole pound lighter at birth too.

My sleep is crappy and I'm very stressed as a home school and stay home Mom, so I have had to take a while to get the last 15 to 20lbs to let go. Just gotta have grace for yourself and do what you can. Walking and healthy eating are great for good health. ☺️ After I finished breastfeeding the last one I started doing intermittent fasting. I put on soooo much weight in the first trimester because i was so nauseous and the only thing that made me feel better was eating heavy, beige foods like mac and cheese, but then in the third trimester I was so sick I could barely eat and I was physically sick a lot. It turned out my body knew was it was doing because i needed that extra weight I'd put on. Imo you should trust what your body is telling you, not the scales (or the doctor in this case).
