  • There is no such thing as the perfect 911. That's part of the joy - each owner has their idea of what is "the one". However, Stanley and I have a pretty similar idea of what might be the right blend of 911 parts for the road. His car is a 964 Carrera 4, modified with style including a 2WD conversion, a 993 gearbox, some hot cams and my favourite seats.

    It's a shame the 964 is rapidly getting out of reach for many of us, the coupe is a lovely car.

    964 is my favourite 911. Ever since I saw a Guards Red 964 C4 shortly after they were brought out, at a ski resort called Seefeld in Austria with cool ski-rack on the back. It looked like a Bond film.

    3:38 Eheheh, that new Bremen SQR46 is doing its job perfectly. It tricked James into thinking it was the original stereo of the car. Good job Blaupunkt, that head unit really blends on that 90's dash.

    • @viriatvsoflvsitania5422
      @viriatvsoflvsitania5422 4 года назад

      @Carson King It's Blaupunkt's modern iteration of the classic Bremen stereo from the mid 80's, now with modern functions like bluetooth, usb, dab and things like that. Looks great on late 80's and early to mid 90's German cars like this 964. A bit on the pricey side though, but it's worth it.

    • @viriatvsoflvsitania5422
      @viriatvsoflvsitania5422 4 года назад

      @Carson King Actually, Becker has been releasing modern versions of the classic 60's Mexico head unit with up-to-date features for quite a while too. The Blaupunkt SQR46 goes for around 400 pounds, depending where you buy it.

      Viriatvs of Lvsitania hello, thinking about getting me a 964 that has an aftermarket head unit that looks just off. Where would you recommend getting one of these nicer / more period looking head units?? I live in the states... thanks

    Do you know what that sounds like? It sounds like a proper car. It's not speed, it's not handling, it's how the whole thing feels as a complete package - the driving experience - that's everything. Lovely!

    964's are amazing. I still think the 993 is the absolute pinnacle of the brand. Too bad they're both too expensive now and eventually completely out of reach from any normal people. Keep up the good work.

    For all the '90's and most of the 2000's, I never really liked the looks of the 964, far preferring the 993. 964's have grown on me too - I now far prefer the look of them over the 993.

      The 964 is the more cohesive design of the two eras. It should have been introduced 10 years earlier than it was as the old bumpered version was slowing in appeal and cost the company sales.
      The 993 has greater sophistication but the ends are out of sync with the body, especially the front design. The 964 retained the classic shapes that made the 911 G body distinctive yet up to date enough.

    • @verde629

    A 964 tailored to its owner. I’d love to have a crack at creating my own 968. Signal green, Recaro pole positions, Momo Proto Tipo, g50 5sp. 3.2 from a 993 with some nice cossie bits and pieces. Akrapovic switchable, KW 3way coilovers. Fuchs alloys with a huge dish at the rear. A 50th birthday present to myself...

    What’s not to love about a 964. Last of the air cooled with the classic silhouette, modern running gear with ABS, electronic fuel injection, modern electronics, active aero spoiler whilst still retaining all that classic 911 charm, sound, proportions. The noise and driving feel is just amazing. Granted the 993 may be the last of the air cooled with a few more improvements still over the 964, but it lost the classic silhouette. Most won’t even notice the improved rear suspension of the 993 driving both back to back. Those upright headlights standing proud in those wings. Can’t beat a 964 and after using my old one for more than a decade, still stopped andnoooked back each and every time after parking it, still lowered the windows going through a tunnel for that sound. Special special cars indeed.

    I love em all really. I mean if you hack up so ultra rare factory car then yeah, maybe you deserve some flak, but these things aren't all that rare, and they could use a bit of improvement sometimes. There's something to be said for keeping your car as close to what the designers meant it to be, but to be honest there's probably alot of stuff they would have loved to do but couldn't because it just would have cost too much, and that's where mods come in.

    Having completed the "evolution" mode of the PC game, "Need For Speed: Porsche Unleashed," I was privy to buying, selling, driving/racing, and customizing many Porsche models between 1950 and 2000. I completed all facets of this game in the year 2000 -- and became an expert Porsche race driver as well as a "Porsche connoisseur" which I was NOT until I played this game in its entirety. Currently, I am playing it again and have yet to start, much less finish, the 'factory driver' mode...
    Currently, I have ended up 'keeping' only 10 Porsche models -- which are my favorite Porsche models of all time...
    One of my favorites is the 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 (964). This may or may not have been a very fine car, plumb-the-snuffalopogus out of the factory -- but I quickly and instantly made so many upgrades that it ended up being far superior to the base/stock 964; I turned it into a completely different machine, altogether:
    For EXTREME horsepower increases, I added a replacement ECU, a high butterfly intake system, a big bore throttle body, exhaust system upgrade, and no less than a stage 4 supercharger. I also added a transmission quick shifter. I added pro racing brakes, pro shocks, pro springs, and an 'extra stiff' sway bar for awesome cornering...
    Finally, I added a very large swanky-looking and ultra-functional whale tail to the back of the car for yet added stability control at high speeds...
    The end result is that -other than my "Moby Dick" 1970s Porsche racing car -- my uber-souped up/uber-modified '89 964 is a true 'world beater.' No......let me rephrase that: "World Beater" sounds 'Satanic.' Let's call this "frog" a "moon-beater" instead...
    It is an ultra-radical, serious track and racing car -- pretty easy to drive and handle -- but still requiring advance driving skills at high speeds. There are no real quirks even without traction control; no understeer/oversteer -- driving is superb and direct........in very stark contrast to my 1978 Porsche 911 Turbo 911 -which is aptly called the "Widowmaker" and does have much oversteer and thank God IS difficult to drive which makes it a blast, fun, and challenging...
    I also painted my 89 964 a medium custom purple lacquer with a wide, white pinstripe trim package which straddles the middle of the top of the car from back to front. It is 'bitchin', radical looking....
    The interior is a very light custom purple leather.......'PINOCCHIO-bitchin,' you "frogs"...
    Those flippin' Germans really know they're 'PINOCCHIO'-engineering, right my bloke 'pal' -- ole boy?

    I find hard to believe that until a few years ago the 964 was regarded as the "poor man's 993", neither "classic" as the bumper/prebumpers cars nor "modern" as the 993: the car for someone looking for a 911 on a budget.
    And look at it today, as it worth even more than a 993...

    The conversion from AWD to 2WD is interesting and unusual. I suppose the owner wanted a 'pure' 911 experience. Makes sense to me.

    I LOVE driving. And I have loved Porsche's (Turbo's) since the '79 came to the U.S. Over the years I have leaned a lot. I put over $100,000.00 into a (euro-spec) 944 turbo to make it into, "the," Porsche HPDE weapon. Crazy? Stupid? Maybe, but I had a blast along the way. (I ended up giving my car away to a friend who had built his own, 37 lbs. of boost 944 Turbo s and had to sell to cover his wife's medical bills...terminal brain cancer). Now I track and race (SVRA) a Trans Am GT1 monster. It's WONDERFUL! No nannies and 730 hp. I'm lucky enough to also own a 2018 991.2 GT3 manual as a street car. And there it is: the lesson I've learned is that, "hyper/race cars don't belong on the street. They are unsatisfying in that their performance envelope is a recipe for jail and/or the death/injury of others who watch their phones instead of the road ahead. For those who don't have to, "flog their phallus," the 964 is a wonderful thing. Light, unbalanced, with a build quality juxtaposed to modern, "firmware," it is a machine worth throwback of 300 hp.
