    As a beginner I cringed at Nxe2 because it would have crushed me, but I love that John just laughed and played on. I love his approach to chess and he's taught me a lot. Thanks for all the great content John, glad you're feeling better.

    I love your philosophy about learning new openings and how it helps your overall chess development. That's exactly why I've switched to the Modern Defense. I know virtually nothing about it (and have been caught in some traps), but I love the challenge of trying something fresh. Great video, John!

    This game had me thinking, chess is like walking around in thick fog. You can see the next few steps around you, and then once you get there the few steps thereafter become clear. And the stronger you are the greater distance before you can't see any further. Random thought

      +fashizzle Indeed :) We're all walking around in the same fog, and your chess understanding is your only searchlight!

      +John Bartholomew It also helps that we have such nice communities to help us find our way. You've done such a great job building your own little community here, John!

    I really dont like that bullet finish, blunders and so on, this game here was very interesting, and everything blows up in a second by a blunder. I wonder if you will play 15+10 or 25+10, which would increase a lot the level of the all game, as well would help you with you explanation, which is excellent by the way. Thanks John Cheers

      +Renato Eckel Valid point. Unfortunately on ICC there is no 15+10 pool, and 25+10 is a little too long for my taste to record regularly. I may opt for an increment time control at some stage if I'm able to find suitable competition. It's tough to find willing Standard opponents...just not a very popular time category online.

    John, what's a really good chess book for a newcomer (ELO ~1275) to read?

    I'd quite like to read that book tbh, since that GM is mentioned a lot in my other one.

      +Jake Corbett It's a fantastic book. A little tough to follow because the positions are so unusual, but GM Hillarp Persson does an excellent job of presenting a Modern repertoire in a fun and original way.

    +JohnBartholomew Two more points and you will be inside the top 10 on ICC of all time (in 15 minute)!

    On move 20, why not Rb8?

    • @JohnBartholomewChess
      @JohnBartholomewChess  9 лет назад

      +Brian Smith If 20...Rb8, then 21.Bxd8 Rxb4 22.Bxf5 wins a piece for White.

    +JohnBartholomew qq.. I have an opportunity to represent my firm against Fabiano in this 24 player simul game. I'm applying to represent! They asked me if I'm nationally ranked? How long does it take to get a national rank? ..Be it provisional. Sorry that its unrelated to the vid, idk where to appropriately ask you.

    • @JohnBartholomewChess
      @JohnBartholomewChess  9 лет назад

      +cantbelievedis Whoa, nice! That sounds like a neat opportunity.
      You'd know if you were nationally ranked, as that pretty much means whether you've played in over-the-board tournaments or not. If you haven't, you'd probably be "N/A". Different federations have different criteria for obtaining a rating, but in the US I believe 24 USCF rated games give you an "established" rating, whereas less than 24 is provisional.
      Good luck against Fabiano. Definitely post the game if you end up playing him!

      +John Bartholomew Cool so technically one game would give me a provisional rating to get on the map. Seems my company might not necessarily care .. they just want a strong player.
      Thanks. def will

    I wonder, can your opponent see the arrows and stuff you put on the board?

    • @squashaddict4529
      @squashaddict4529 9 лет назад +2

      +ThinkingSk3ptically I think he can. CE has a game with naka which he won and started showing his moves on the board then naka sent him a message saying "You have the arrogance to replay the moves" so naka must've been able to see it.

    • @JohnBartholomewChess

      +Squash Addict thats not the first thing I've seen thats made me think naka is not such an admirable character. i was watching him play yaacov one time and he was winning bullet like 33-4 and yaacov flagged him in a drawn position, and naka threw a hissy fit in the chat because he didn't offer the draw. even though naka flags people all the time in every position. why the double standard and childish antics? your one of the best in the world have a little class man
