I loved the way that you wiggled that flat brush from side to side and it gave the impression of water. Thanks again, you are helping me so much as I have started a painting of Penmon lighthouse. Your videos on the blue of the sky, clouds, sea colours, brush technique, rocks and reflections are all helping me.
I didn't start painting until 3 years ago (at age 50!) and have never taken formal classes. Instead, I have watched hour upon hour of RUclips video instructors. I wish I had discovered your channel when I had first started! You are by far the best teacher. I get the most useful tips in a very succinct format. Thank you, and please keep the quick tips coming!
Hello Dianne, thank you very much for your wise advice, some good advice thanks to your experience and also because you really notice that they come from kindness, congratulations!
Dianne, like most of the comments, I agree, I wish I found you sooner. Your are by far the best teacher I have found yet. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful talent. Do you have cd's that would teach everything that a painter needs to know in becoming a better painter for sale? God bless!
Hi Dianne. I appreciate your teaching style. Thank you for the why-it’s so helpful. Would you please do a video on how to create sun sparkle? The tiny flecks of light are eluding me. Im working on disturbed water with tiny sparkles and wet spots along the edge. I tried to include a photo but the site doesn’t allow it. Thank you
Rather than have you wait (because we've got lots of requests already on the schedule), take a look at Andrew Tischler's approach to painting seascapes, first here: ruclips.net/video/U_RBqXnzIHo/видео.html and then here: ruclips.net/video/4JQjnlYyzPs/видео.html
I am doing a dog portrait and the furry dog was ok, but I am having trouble showing dimension, in the smooth fur of the beagle faces. Quick tip idea. Thank you for the help thus far. I find you easy to understand, which is so relavent for a beginner.
I'll put this on our QT schedule. Meanwhile, if you will remove from your thinking mind that it is a dog, and refocus your attention to what's in shadow and what's NOT in shadow, then look for the various degrees of value for both, you'll be surprised at how the dimension will reveal itself. Wait until the values are set before adding any texture, then let the texture show in the middle value areas.
Diane, I am color-challenged so I must ask for what colors are being used. There are numerous 'How to's', but seldom do they actually show 'How To' in depth in regard to colors! They assume that everyone is NOT colorblind, and I am! I recently did a painting of fly fishing and showed it to a real fisherman (woman, actually) who said it was a nice painting but she'd never eat a fish out of THAT water! So, there's my dilemma! What colors to use for water!
Larry, if you can see values, then I suggest you use the grisaille approach to painting. A good video for how to do that is here: ruclips.net/video/L9k-qJxCuKo/видео.html . My next suggestion is that you stick to a set of primaries such as alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue and cadmium yellow plus white. Have someone to help in identify the proportions of mixtures for each for hues. Then you can learn to control color over grisaille by proportional mixes. This will get you in the right ballpark.
I'm a 72 year old retired teacher who now lives in a Asian country. Unfortunately if you are over 60, you are not allowed to go out because of Covid19. I have been under home confinement for almost 8 months. I have managed to get some acrylic paints and some plywood to paint on. I am quite experienced at decoupage so know perspective and colour. However, I'm going to learn from you how to paint tropical landscapes and seascapes. I have my garden and many photos to refer to. I'm trying to bring beauty into my life and stay sane!
Hi Dianne, a question is that how did you manage to use oil paints all these years and still able to tolerate it. Some famous artists in our countryI have heard from a museum curator have stopped using oil because of allergies. Do you have some safety precautions? Thank you in advance.
Katherine, I love working with oil paints, always have. (I also love working with watercolor, gouache and pastels). I don't use any mediums or solvents with strong odors--I use Gamsol and Turpenoid for cleaning brushes and only refined linseed to thin paint when it thickens. Occasionally, I will use a bit of Liquin if I need an area to dry rapidly. That plus, in my studio, near my easel, I have a small exhaust fan that I run while working. But I have always loved the smell of an oil painter's studio. Add to that-I do not use colors that are toxic. Those are the precautions I use. I've never experienced any problems with allergies related to oil paint.
Dianne Mize hi Dianne...I enjoy all of your tips..such valuable information. It would be nice to have a small .. Dianne Mize in the Studio tips for painting...guess that would be a lot.. Goodness with all the youtubers channels today so called "teaching," are giving such wrong information for beginners...many are going out buying their suggested brushes...one acrylic channel is even charging a dollar for her reference photos that she "gets for free," on the royality free sites! And yes the subs pay..she's making over 12,000 dollars a month!! Imagine if all of her 93,000 subs and counting pay a month...and she just copies the photo..using every tubed color there is..sits at a table and uses long handle brushes...and about 12 or so brushes for each painting...oh it's ridiculous...and people think their learning by painting along...and the so called artist has no idea about composition...color mixing..terms and such..or maybe doesn't share just to use all the Amazon affiliate supplies on her list...it angers me that she and others get away with this..and one such as yourself gives..shares so much valuable information for free...I only hope others read this and share your channel...you so deserve much back...
Can I ask...your videos here on RUclips that are available for purchase...once purchased can they be viewed here...or they on an account? Thank you for your time...
Your best bet is to go to diannemize.com and purchase the videos to own. All video tutorials available on RUclips are available there, too. You can download for $7 per tutorial or purchase a DVD for $10.95. Hope this answers your question.
