  • Paul Blahyj is a coach at the Toyota Lean Management Centre.
In this episode, Ryan Tierney and Matthew Thompson from Lean Made Simple ask him about:
    - How he went from professional ice hockey to making doors at Toyota
    - Working his way up from the factory floor to a senior leadership position
    - Internally promoting vs externally hiring
    - Why Toyota relies so much on paper over digital systems
    - Earning the right to automated
    - Why the term “low-skilled labourer” makes no sense
    - And how Toyota can help take your lean journey to the next level.
    Check it out!

The concept of using humans vs machines for certain tasks is mind blowing. A business may invest large portions of money into machines that do a process only for that process to be eliminated or totally improved, whereas a human doing it is more flexible and can improve and innovate rapidly. Totally automating a task may stifle improvement!

If the leaders don’t do it, you’ve got no chance. That’s the #1 rule in my opinion but so many want to bypass it! Very well articulated here. Great interview chaps!

Great interview. Definitely one of the major opportunities in continuous improvement is in leadership. If leadership has the mindset, it is easier for the team members to follow

I love your videos. They’ve completely transformed my life! One request from an American viewer: I sent these videos to my mom and she wasn’t able to understand them because of your Irish accents. It would be great to have subtitles or something like that.
    All the best, Jonah
