I bought a 2003 Volvo d 12, 10 yrs ago as spare truck for 15k .This has been amazing, works local Vancouver and ice road in Yellowknife 2.6 million km on now and it's running super fine. The pre emissions aspect is most the best.o/o miss on work when service repairs are needed to main truck, I say I want to be a business owner not o/o. I need to service my customer not let other trucks replace me. I find that the revenue I make with spare truck working really off sets the repair bill, I get to keep my coveralls rolled up under the bunk...I did not realize the truck I bought , but know now the gem she is.

I’m not over the road but working as a technician I drive a lot of trucks from all brands the Volvos ride nice and have a great turning radius, the freightliners w/dd15 idle smoothly/the dash doesn’t vibrate, and the kenworths have a nice overall fit and finish along with nice features and ride quality, but got forbid you have an electrical issue it’s expensive every time.

I got a question trying to decide on getting a new 2020 Volvo just because my truck is got 1100000 miles on it. Never changed transmission like others have ( knock on wood). And yes I’ve gone through 3 sets of injectors and always change my oils at 13000 miles since new, transmission and differential fluids every 2 years. I don’t run much anymore. I’m just afraid something goes wrong and spend too much money on it. Done oil samples and everything reads fine. Would you recommend to keep driving it or it would be time for a new one? I know now why people call it the freight Shaker. It's one of the bumpiest trucks I've ever driven, shakes like a crackhead in rehab. The Volvo caters to the driver whereas the freightliners just a utility truck it's purely utilitarian. I go back to a Volvo any day. Honestly I'd go to anything but a Freightliner

Volvo are good, but the drivelines are GARBAGE. From the joke injector design the jerk engineers FINALLY did away with 2 years ago, to the worthless I-shift transmission that just eats input shaft bearings. The driveline is just plain worthless and underpowered. 1 guy has a 06 with the cummins isx and eaton 13 speed. 1.6 million miles. No overhaul yet, but its days are probably numbered. If I get a Volvo, it would be a pre-smog era with the series 60 and in damn good condition. Chances of finding a nice one are slim. Last 3 I saw with that combo looked like they been in a war and have no clue how they ever passed a dot inspection.

Hey wats going on. Thanks for this video. It was very informative. I'm looking to purchase my 1st truck as a new owner operator. Was looking in the range from 2003-2007. So you would prefer the Volvos of those years over the Freightliner Columbias or Centuries of those years?? Do you have any EGR problems out of any of your Volvos?? And last question, you would prefer the Volvo with a Volvo engine over the Volvo with the Cummins?? I've heard that the only downside to the volvos is that they have to go to the dealership for maintenance. Thanks for all your help

    • @TruckYoo
      @TruckYoo  4 года назад +6

Hey, I do prefer the Volvo over Freightliner in that year range simply because they hold up better. Try driving both back to back you'll see the difference. As far as engine the VED12 over Cummins for sure.
I had few of those yeas in the Cummins spec and running them along with my VED12 they had more issues and worse fuel mileage. The EGR is no problem. Also not expensive to fix. I'm not sure where you are located but here in the Midwest there are plenty of shops that will work on them without issues. Depending on what you want to do and where parts could be an issue. Watch my video about spec'ing a truck. Maybe that could help a bit. I appreciate you watching.

If we make comparison between older trucks which I missed in my other comment.
The legendary 12.7 is definitely the best engine
    not the Volvo d12.
I ran few Freightliners with 12.7 for 7-10 years
    the reliability was unbelievable!
We never touched those engine, never had to tow a truck for mechanical reason and always
got 7.5-9 mpg on them, but unfortunately they don’t make those any more and I can’t look for trucks that are 20 years because no driver will have a good reason to deal with old equipments.
For now I’m sticking with Cascadia.

I suppose all mechanics could have a favorite, just like drivers do. Some mechanics may also recommend what they are comfortable working on or if they have accessibility to more parts for a specific truck. It may be easier on them, but it doesn't mean its always best for the truck owner. UNLESS you buy a truck that has slim pickings on parts...that would be excess down time too.

I’m not sure if you were lucky with one Volvo or what! I had trucking company for the past 17 years and we tried every truck and Volvo definitely was the worst piece of truck we ever
tried! I’m not talking about one truck but several we tried always same drama and we spent about 200% more to maintain them Volvos🙁 They say you have to spend the extra money on Volvo because it gives you a quite ride. Almost all newer trucks are pretty quite and some of them are even much more quite than Volvo. International for example with Cummins is much quieter than Volvo.
Have you seriously tried other trucks before you came to this very wrong conclusion?
Do you really think that D13 is more reliable than DD15?
Man! For every one issue I have with DD15 there is 10 issues with d13.
All my volvos had camshafts problems that costed us $10-17k to fix.
I would stick with Detroit engine and if I have to add another engine then Cummins is 2nd engine in mind. All other engines are worthless.

As a mechanic new peterbilt trucks are garbage. New Cummins engines are even worse than newer Volvo’s. And paccar smh boat anchor for sure. Volvo engine from 2000 to 2007 are really great engines if you know how to work on them. Engine valve adjustment is the easiest out . But again these are the pre emissions Volvo the newer engines fail a lot not because of the engine itself but because of the def. also people have to understand if you buy a used Volvo that big companies have cut the balls off by the time you get it the engine has worked twice as hard. That’s with any new truck and some old engines. I have guys with 60 series that hate them. After a rebuild and a tune the love them. Same with the Volvo engine and older Cummins. That’s why I tell guys if you have an old truck by a crate motor and make it yours. Get something used you get used problems.

We have plenty mechanics and they have no problems with those engines. Cascadia/Merc is nightmare and cost of parts is killing. Paccard engines/Daf/ are reliable but needs care and servis is nightmare. Every new engine with def/adblue/ sooner or later brings you problem.
