First off, this is the best video I found on how to replace the starter. However, I did not remove the exhaust in any way. After I removed all of the connectors and bolts, I held the starter up as if the starter bolts were in and pulled directly back. It rubbed against the cat( I still have stock exhaust) but came out with a little force on my end. I installed it the reverse way with a little force. Also, I used a flat head screw driver to remove the purple wire connector with no issues. Thanks for the video.
I ran into the same problem with that engine boss blocking the starter removal on my 2006 (LS2) Cadillac CTS-V. I couldn’t see any reason for it, so I cut the damn thing off with a reciprocating saw.
I found the issue with my 09X06 Hot Start problem. The B+ terminal post on the starter was lose. Also had no lock washer. If you look at the electrical lugs on the starter you will see their are pitted from arcing.

Disconnect the header. tilt the starter down and pull. Its easy!
The starter died?
I guess, works cold, not when hot?
