Your method here actually isn't bad! It is a great way to render a weathered vehicle at this scale. If you want to take it to the next level with minimal effort, slap some enamel washes on them!
I can confirm they won’t overpower the mini if you remove the excess before it cures. I have a few videos on my channel where I use enamels on the solar auxilia tanks, planes, and even infantry if you want to see how they look.

Good advice, I considered that - thats how I do my full scale HH army :) but it was affraid that it would overshadow the paint job too much.
