My grandmother told me once, "Don't ever wear white when you are riding a steam train, and you know you'll be going through tunnels.". She said whatever you were wearing that was white wouldn't stay white for long and would never be white again after that. As far as I know, she only rode a train once, and that was from Durham NC to Chicago, Illinois, to visit my grandfather, who was stationed there during WWII. My grandmother never liked to stray to far from home, for to long. She must have really loved that man to do that. That's what my grandfather and her sister thought at least. So my grandfather proposed.
3:53 I’ve ridden on this locomotive before a while ago. We rode it down from Cumberland to frostburg to watch it go round the turntable. Beloved memories.

Most engines of that era burned wood, therefore produced a lot of sparks, sparks that could easily start brush and forest fires. The wide stacks are spark arrestors to prevent such fires.
In America, Locomotives are the most powerful because 30% of steam is for traction and 70% is to blow the whistle every 3 seconds throughout the entire journey. We love steam, so let us hear the engines work :)
It is different, but you have to realize that most videos are taken at grade crossings, which we have a lot more of, and there are specific signals they have to use per NORAC. I certainly understand the appeal of hearing it work, but for pure access, you're always going to get a lot of whistle in videos
The 90 hasn’t had yellow lettering since 2005. Since then it’s been in more historically accurate aluminum and white lettering as it had on the Great Western.

I love the old Norfolk and Western road. You don't show the compound engine 2-6-6-4, Class A engine that they used. That's my favorite engine they used for the long coal drags. First time I've seen a real Thomas the Tank engine. That Pere Marquette Berkshire sure can pull a string of cars. Of course my most favorite engine of all is the Southern MS class Mikado, the 4501.
@@DynamoProductions-trains Wow! I didn't know that; sure will miss her. That was the most used class of engine for Norfolk and Western. Will she ever run again? Seems like they should restore her for future railroad enthusiasts.
@@w.rustylane5650 Will 1218 ever run again? Who knows; I doubt it, simply due to the financial cost of restoring 1218 and maintaining her. Not to mention 611 and all other steam engines are no longer allowed to pull excursions on the NS, leaving the 611's operators to search for short lines to run 611 on, finding short lines that can accommodate 1218 would only be that much harder. Then again, how many said a Big Boy would never run again? And look at what UP just did with the 4014.
@@WesternMaryland-rd1gd The thing is she has missing parts that nobody knows where they are, or if they still exist at all, and currently, we don’t have the machinery or resources to rebuild those missing parts. So now, we either wait for the far future to come when it those parts can be rebuilt or we just let her sit there, unable to run ever again.

+imagreatbigman The two 4-4-0's, being the York 17 and Leviathan 63, did recreate it twice over the week they spent operating together over Steam Into History, based out of New Freedom, PA. However, none of those scenes were from that particular day, they were from various other events the engines partook in over the week, often with the second engine either slightly ahead or behind the engine primarily featured in each shot, which is visible with a few of the scenes of 63.

@rmgilyard. Yeah! So do I.
What a mournful sound N&W's 611 has for a whistle, sends a chill down my back every time I hear it.
This is so satisfied to watch. Not only kids, but also parents who love steam train.
