I imagine this could be the theme to a galaxy movie; bowsers just chucked Mario across the arena, peach is in tears, when suddenly, a bright red light begins to shine from beneath the rubble on top of Mario. Like a comet racing through the sky, Mario shoots out of the pile and roses up into the air on contrails of red, before looking down with steely determination in his eyes at bowser.

I imagine space in the mario universe uses dnd rules, where everything has its own atmosphere. Including people. Of course, said atmosphere isn't unlimited. But there's enough objects and things in the levels that he doesn't need to worry.
