I did something new yesterday and started programming the drums first. Working through each song section and listening how the drums interacted with the guitar part (as I played along with it). Tweaking little by little. Then I layed down the guitar part. When recording the bass, it was so much better. With the drums locked into the guitar, it gave me freedom to try a few out of pocket ideas. Your octopus thought is so true. I try to imagine being behind the kit. What would feel good playing? I appreciated seeing your process and getting fresh drum ideas. Super helpful! 🤘
Honestly learned a lot as a drummer. It's nice to know what's expected or what others would like to hear so we can focus our efforts.
we absolutely need part 2 !!!
This is such a good video because being a drummer it is so true. Keep up the great work Trey :)
I love Superior Drummer. We run Roland V-Drums into Superior Drummer (acoustic drums are not an option due to the powers that be). I really like Toontrack's libraries, very rich.
I love your lessons Tray! Thanks for all the hard work and time you put into these!
This was a super interesting approach As a (mediocre) guitarist i often dont really know what to do when it comes to other instruments i'm not familiar with.
Could you do like a similar video for bass guitar? I never quite know what to do with it (other than playing the root notes and an occasional lick in between here and there).
This may be just what I need to help me move forward in trying to write full songs. Thanks man 🤛🤛 I always took to actually tapping out beats with pads
Any company should fall over themselves to have their shit advertised like this. Good content
the king coming over with the sickest tips for songwriting as always
nice one man, would love a video on fills, ghost notes and dynamics too :)
Hey Trey, you did a very helpful video on how to create song from a riff. Could you do a video on creating a song from a chord progression? I have a problem getting from chord progressions to riffs instead of the other way around. My lead lines keep ending up as vocal lines or bass lines.
Use chord tones in your riffs. Simple.
Awesome video Trey! I really liked seeing the drums on a grid. I have always had a problem figuring out different time signatures. 4/4 gold.....5/4, 7/8.....what have you. I guess I just can't count. What I am getting at, could you do a video with time signatures on a grid and use some example songs to go with it? Might be a good video.
One of your best informative videos you've put out. Thank you
I usually like working with 4 bar phrases subdivided into two halves, so that bar 1 and 3 are basically the same, but 2 and 4 are different.
Yeah that's a good way to do it
Trey, you’re Gear Gods Trey today! This is awesome stuff yo!
This channel is an absolute gold!
Trey - Promotes the awesome EZ Drummer 3
Also Trey - let’s use the crappy midi editor in Protools and not the really good midi editor within the plug-in 😂
Sorry Trey have to make fun a little!! Loving this video!!
@Constantinos Ioannides toontrack never makes their products free.
So cool!
Love the octopus analogy lol
I often come up with beats in my head ( I’m a drummer) but then when I try n play them sometimes I’m like…. Yeah nah,
Your not Danny Carey bro 🤦♂️😂
The Octopus behind the drums cracked me up! 😂
Thanks Trey, greatly appreciated
Well done!
Would you recommend working on this as a refinement process after settling on guitar parts? I often run a really basic pattern as a form of livelier metronome to get what I want for the song, before going back to fine tune the drums for what I'd like specifically.
For me, doing it this way is a starting point usually, mainly because you wind up with something pretty specific, but also you can absolutely do it at any point to make the parts more interesting
Ok, I admit it. I don't care about the drums I use and record with as much as my guitars and vocals these days. In my defense though, I am writing, playing and recording everything myself, playing everything except the drums. And EZ drummer and Superior Drummer are pretty awesome as is in lots of ways.
Hi, Trey. I'm a new sub. Dovydas sent me. Saw that video doin' the Sweetwater Jingle.
Welcome!
Those drums got spicy!! 🔥
Drumatic beats 🤦♂️ great video Trey, still gonna use logic auto drummer and mr smith 😂 but one day will get a drum pack 😁
Dying to see what the new SDX is. I'd love for it to be a spiritual successor to DKH Superior or something. Considering Fredrik Thordenall is involved, decent chance it'll be something like that. But Trey, I'm sure you already know exactly what it is. lol
Eh, not really sold on this kind of thing for metal, I think simple is better. For jazz or pop i agree with you though. These kind of drums work really well. Just my humble opinion.
Yup, sounded like a trap beat more than anything
Sometimes it becomes so complex its difficult to enjoy it. You dont really know where is it going. Almost like random hits.
What do you think of Logic's AI drummers? That's what I've been using because I don't know anything about what to do with drums
Fire!
I like 20 bar kick loops. Especially when they result it fights ;)
Thanks!
Either way it needs more cowbell.
🤘🤘
Man, that intro song!!! New channel intro, maybe?
Yeah you like it? I think it's aight but it's kind of nonsense really, just some tech death nothingness haha
@@treyxaviermusic lol you think so? I think it's pretty unique and groovy, man. Not better than the old intro but it's definitely spicy 🔥.
This video was made for me after the song I submitted last Friday lmao
Anyone know what that midi controller is?

Dillinger!
If "Beware of the octopus" doesn't sound cool enough you could always go for:
"Be wary of Danny Carey"
Has anyone ever told you that you sound like fry from Futurama?
No, I usually get Chris Pratt, Will Ferrel or Ryan Reynolds haha
Great Video, I've watched it 3 times now !! :D
But, why does your head look too big for your body in this video?!?!
Is it just me haha???
I mean, I do kind of have a huge head hahaha
You made my day responding to this 🤣
I guess you have to keep all those tasty riffs and ideas somewhere my man 🤷👊
Technically 4 on the floor means bass drum hits on the down beat. Just sayin no big.
my drums are absolutely atrocious...
1st all those brands dump Ye, now we seeing ground zero of a bunch of audio brands dumpin' Trey for anti-octopi rhetoric... ;)
now lets go make some interesting music people!! anyone? no? well okay then..
"You need unique drum sections because you write unique music"- why you gotta be so rude? 😢hahaha
I like it because it could be a compliment OR an insult hahaha
@@treyxaviermusic I though you were just making fun of your proved ability to write riffsaladas, I mean, songs hahaha
It's just not natural or pleasing to the ears. Sorry man...just not into busy, messy, overproduced stuff like that.
5 minutes in and you're way better than Lars Ulrich.
I'm aiming to be better than Skeet Ulrich though
@@treyxaviermusic you gotta admit he has some cool snare placement in his better years? 😶
Bullshit
What r u talking about 1 second in amdhes already better than Ulrich
