Don't exaggerate. I focus on rings and also train sprinting but still think that you have to do bar squats and deadlift in order to train "whole body".
wojtekimbier You can do one legged squats/pistol squats. Those are a lot harder than weighted squats, and trust me, I have tried both. I can squat about 250 pounds but can barely do a pistol squat. It requires better balance, better joints, and a lot of time and patience to master. As for deadlifts, you really dont even need a barbell. With calisthenics, you could do that with a pull up bar UPSIDE DOWN and that would mean more stabilization, balance, and strength.
1) What you describe as upside-down deadlift is just a type of pullup. You think it will work your lower body? You need barbell deadlifts for that. 2) I can do 10 full pistol squats no problem. They don't build strength, just balance and flexibility. I squat 68kg. You need barbell squats to "train whole body", not just rings and bodyweight.
JWALNATION I squat twice my bodyweight (about 145 kg) and deadlift almost 3 times my bodyweight and I've been lifting for 1.5 years only and still a teenager. When I'm 25 I'll be able to do 1000 pistol squats everyday probably. Legs are just too strong for calisthenics. I don't see the NEED for a barbell though, lifting huge stones, logs etc will do the job but there's a reason calisthenics guys lack lower body strength.
Rotatable handles are very convenient and that's the biggest improvement of TRX compared to rings in my opinion. But is it worth it to choose TRX over rings? Definitely no. I'd still go for the ring if I had to choose.

1.25" wooden rings - best $40 I ever spent on Amazon. I live in Hawaii and have them set up on the patio in the back yard. I have completely built a functional and aesthetic body on rings alone! Amazing!!
I have both and they are both great. For older people or people with limited ability, the TRX is a great tool. Some people here assume only young people exercise and have to aspire to be advanced. Actually the world has millions of people with different abilities so there’s always room for the TRX. But at 40, I prefer rings but who knows, I may go back to the TRX in the future. Great video by the way.
Rings for sure. Many more exercises possible and simple is always best. It's easy enough to make a cradle for your feet with bits of climbing rope if you want to do TRX style crunches. I have metal rings that I use at home which are completely indestructible but a bit heavy and composite ones for travel which are light and will probably also last forever. TRX is way way too much money for limited functionality. Just my opinion.
Why not both? You can fashion your own TRX Handles with some tubular webbing and pvc and attach them to the bottom of your rings-just as compact, and gives you two tools from one. For each handle, make 2 straps with the webbing-one long, and one short. Size depends on the user & how far down you want the TRX handles to be from your rings-experiment and figure out what works best for you. Pass one end of each strap through the piece of PVC, then tie each into it's own loop using a water knot. Pass the knots back into the pvc to hold them in place. Then, using the longer loop of webbing, secure it to your ring using a girth hitch.
I paid around 75€ for the TRX system about 5 years ago and it’s still going strong. I never go to the gym now and take it with me when traveling. If I compare the costs of a gym it’s definitely paid for itself. No complaints but I can’t speak about rings because I’ve never used them.
Neat trick. If you want rotating handles for your rings and have enough leftover rope from the straps you can just wrap them around the rings and they rotate. It makes curls a lot more comfortable
2:10 I just purchased the PEFXT "knock off" for $40 and they are very high quality. You can also suspend them independently like rings, or use the extension strap which creates a "Y" junction. When using the extension, they don't slide as seen around 1:08 and 4:54
Could you post something on how you built them? I have always been intrigued with the whole "improvise, adapt, overcome" and "make do or do without" concepts.
Great video! I have watched this many times :) I'm using the rings but think about TRX - the ability to rotate the wrist is a good feature however it's not so much benefit: - if I need some biceps curls variation I'm just removing the rings from straps and using any short rounded stick inserted into the both straps at the same time as barbell neck. - removing rings from straps does also make straps using a comfortable for various exercises where the legs should be fixed there.
Sounds like the smart play would to start w/ TRX then if desired advance w/rings. One thing I noticed was TRX push ups and moves were feet are suspended are much more difficult than it looks. I'm good for 60-90 floor push-ups however I can only do about 8-10 TRX push ups. Those stabilizer and core muscles get taxed!!
I think that would be my plan..I bought a cheap 30 dollar set of custom straps very TRX like, and will eventually progress to the rings and combine it with yoga on off days. I get why people.would not want to get ripped off with TRX, but nowadays there's plenty of very cheap suspension options that won't break the bank

I like both for different reasons. I've got one of the newer TRXs and it adjusts very very quickly and it is also self leveling. Anything you can do with TRX you can do with rings - plus with rings you can do several more exercises. Don't like push ups with the TRX because the design makes the straps rub agains my body.
You can also just use the gymnastics rings straps without attaching the rings for suspended leg training. It would perform the exact same function as the TrX then.
My trx straps are knock offs for about 30$ and I think they are better than the original, because they are two separate straps. No worries doing asymmetric exercises.
Thanks to your channel, the 4 times a week I hit the gym it's 90% rings exercises. At first people looked funny at me, but after getting good at dips, they became rather impressed. TRX's rubbery spinning grip is no match for the natural wooden deal. Live by the rings, die by the rings?!
I love rings i need to use them more but what i love about the rings is you can hit pretty much all the same muscle groups that weights do with nothing but 2 rings and 2 straps
I have rings and after a quick search at my local hardware store I bought a pvc pipe and straps to improvise inexpensive trx handles that attach to the rings.:)
As a lower-intermediate user (who will never get to the advanced level you are showing) I found the Trx more functional and convenient. I was skeptical but then I found it's a really useful tool (only 26€ for excellent quality+lighter & easier to set up than rings)
at first I am the fans of dumbbells and gym. but due to the packed working schedule and I started to calisthenics. you are one of my favorite youtuber, stay fit bro
thank you so much for this video! as a beginner I always wondered what the differences in usability between trx and rings were, since they are at so drasticly different price points! I think I will go for the rings because they are cheaper and more versatile. plus they look way cooler!
The Nossk Twin Pro system has built-in door hangers or stops that are very convenient. No extra piece to fiddle around with, connect and disconnect, carry, keep track of, go missing, etc. And the flat grip doesn't force your hand into an unnatural curvature.
We're moving house soon, and I'm thinking of using my soon to be larger gym space to add a suspension trainer to my current bare bones bike & dumbbells setup. I did a lot of TRX work with a previous personal trainer so will probably start with that, and add rings down the road. This was helpful!
I have both, but I must say that u can do Muscleup's, Dips, and everything u do with the rings, furthermore, u can have more possibilities to find a place to support a TRX than for rings, for example, u can put it in a door, in a non-horizontal bar etc.
I have both. The price is not an issue, since non-original TRX costs 15 euros, with the same quality (gym trainers' opinion, not only mine). Good, wooden rings cost 25-30 euros. But it is true what you say: TRX are more confortable, but I would NOT bet my ass hanging from them, while rings have this very function. I use the two tools in the sense you mention: TRX for grounded exercises, and rings for total body weight exercises.
Suspension training is the best for the body to gain strength and take your body to the next level. and this depends on the comfort of who or how you want your goals with respect to the one you use (trx or rings). I have purchased both and they are excellent training tools.
tupac1971ful you out the rings on the floor and you have both extended range of motion and a very big instability element, which means great balance and forearm work
Hi, I very like your videos. What I will tell has nothing to do with those two but as a beginner progressing to intermediate, I personally love working with bands over dumbell or similar. It gives ease at possible movement and lets you have a taste before you can imagine to do the full movement. They load progressively and very friendly to joints as well. 3 months beforehand I thougth they were only for women doing pilates at home but finding them very useful in streght training was an enlighning moment for me.
You missed on pointing out the advantage of being able to set up the TRX at home using the door strap attachment. Convenient when you're traveling or when it's cold outside and you don't want to spend money on a gym membership. Also there are advanced techniques using the TRX. Check out Dan Long's Suspension Revolution 2 program. It's intense with Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels
TrainingPal yes, I saw door anchors being sold at my local fitness store, just slip the ring strap through them, even cheaper is buy some pvc piping and slide them through the straps and you have door stops
Just starting with rings, finding your videos very useful. Rings are great, much more fun than pumping iron at the gym, and I love the fact that I can toss them in my backpack wherever I go.
I started trx with a personal trainer, but then I moved onto rings, and I can train my whole upper body which greatly contributed to my strenght, and helped a lot with slowly building lean muscle💪💪💪
I'm just crazy about your videos man ! Inspiring me really hard, you are my model... and overall you are looking like freaking Ragnar 😍 I'd love to see more gymnastics workout on your channel ! please continue for a long time from a french viewer
I use a brand of strap called Domyos it is 10$ where I live and it is even better than TRX for that the strap is sawn in a different way and eliminates the problems. I am super happy with it. I bought it from a local store Decathlon.
Buy the rings AND spend 20-30$ in a mountain equipment/hardware store and build your own TRX version that can be better than the real one - and have both. I just built my own custom TRX and it supports my entire weight and more, and I made it more customisable by adding light carabiners at joints (I can use them fixed like rings, connected like TRX, short/long, attached just the handles to certain points like a hand-rail using an anchor and so on) . For certain advanced exercises I think rings would be better due to the structure of the ring itself but so far so good.
My favorite out of these two. And many of us are surely Rings. They cost less and are built like a beast and functions like a monster. They are great for a full upper body workout.
I have both and love my TRX bands because they are always mounted in my garage. Easy access and great equipment but my rings are far more simple but prized by me. Rings bring out my inner Gollum because they are my precious. I set them up on a tree so it’s far more effort then my TRX but so worth it
Both are great but disappointed how the aspect of strength imbalance wasn't mentioned with regards to TRX. If one side pushes/pulls harder it'll be uneven and it's great for correcting imbalances.
I've a trx, but I get to do many exercises as a ring. For instance, I use trx to do dips, pull ups, skin the cat and other movements. but I do it only because I trust on my trx that I've many years. But I'll buy some rings now.
As a beginner I would start with a homemade trx style straps system. As I progressed to intermediate and then advanced level, I would remove the strap handles and add the rings.
Just wanna thank you for your awesome content learned alot and I changed from weightlifting to calisthenics and I love it. Keep it up dude the subscribers will sure increase in the next month's!
With some ingenuity you could devise a way to make the handle rotation on a suspension trainer optional, so you could use a false grip when desired - a lock-out option.
I tried both, bought them and I prefer rings. TRX bands caused slight friction burns and pain to my wrist and the angle of the hand position is compromised. As an example, I found that pushups limits the angle of the wrist because of the pressure exerted by weight on the bands. However they are good for other exercises.
ring I haven't tried it, but it might be more comfortable to rest your foot on the strap itself instead of the ring when using your foot Also, it may be good to attach a strap to the end of the strap
The one unforgivable feature of TRX bands for me is the buckle being so low: Perhaps I was doing them wrong due to being used to rings, but I tried doing push ups with the TRX band and I couldn't get the buckle to stop rubbing against my arms. They were bright red and it hurt like hell.
Это самое лучшее видео о различиях гимнастических колец и TRX-петель. Только здесь я узнал, что рукоятки петель свободно вращаются. Одно лишь дополнение - TRX-петли достаточно легко можно сделать в домашних условиях, в отличии от колец.
The thing that limits the TRX is its Y structure, for the rings its the rings themselves. I use different grip implements and almost none of them were design for the ring. So I bought TRX handles and replaced the rings. Now I can train calisthenics and grip to the next level.
I have something similar to the TRX but without the connected grip, so I guess mine are the best of both worlds. They also only cost me 15$ and are pretty high quality.
I've used both. Rings is King 👑. The other piece of equipment I recommend is Silks. A superior way to stretch and release the tension in soft tissue. Think of it as Yin and Yang. Silks for Yin, Rings for Yang. A complete exercise program.
I use TRX for travel gym and door hook is great for inside my house and in hotel rooms- thats what is mainly designed for no? - portability and for use indoors? both options are good tho.
Awesome vid!!! I think one aspect which was left out was the fact that the TRX can be set up for home usage but hiking it up to a door. Check out Monkii Bars. They are a hybrid of the two.
Morshad Hossain you can buy door anchors , i saw a set at a fitness store, and hook up the rings or even just straps and pvc piping if you want make your own
Is very hard to use the rings indoors, I think trx are made for indoors even if they are advertised as you can use them outdoors. Thankfully to the trx anchor you can use any door as a standing point for your exercises. Even I didn't try any ring more advanced exercises I don't see why trx can't be used too? Thank your for you video. [edit] almost forgot... please make a video on how you use your parallettes.. there is very few good content on yt on parallette's training . Would be great if you can show some beginner to more advanced moves on those babies and maybe tell your parallettes workout! Cheers from Romania, you have my full support! Vlad R.
The anchor point in my suspension system isn't high enough for me to use for push-ups (I end up pushing into strap) I have to just put my feet in them and do decline push ups instead.
Check out the Nossk line of products. Cheaper than rings, better than TRX. And you can add rings to the Nossk straps. You would then have both. Also, the handles are more comfortable, and the foot slings add versatility. Durable, high quality materials. Better than Chinese. Made in USA.
The rings i just bought are amazing i barely can do dips and my forearms chest and shores are sore as fuck. Plus my other p bar exercices are way easier
I think for my calisthenics routine I'll grab a pair of rings and incorporate my workout mid mountain bike ride. I can put them on a tree somewhere and workout! I don't have a pullup bar anywhere near me until I get to my college :)
Pvc pipe, drill some holes, attach 4 eye ring bolts (i tried 2 but the pipe flexed to much. I weigh 210 lbs), 100ft of 300 lb strength rope, 4 D-rings. Cost me $22.
I actually live in the middle of the desert, but great video brother.

Another advantage of the rings is that you can use them on the ground without straps
You mean for push ups?
Better not if you want yours to stay in good condition. You can do pushups on other unstable objects, no reason at all to use rings.
TrainingPal yeah, like the ones Dominik sky does
tupac1971ful you out the rings on the floor and you have both extended range of motion and a very big instability element, which means great balance and forearm work
Do whichever, there's no practical difference. People pay too much attention to such tiny nuances.
Very good comparison video man !
Yeah, I've seen this 'door adapter' for TRX, you're right. But I think you could do the same with the rings.
TrainingPal yes, I saw door anchors being sold at my local fitness store, just slip the ring strap through them, even cheaper is buy some pvc piping and slide them through the straps and you have door stops
You can do the same whit pull up bar too!
i love setting up my trx over the door, but nowhere in the apartment to set up the rings, so love the trx.
Inspiring me really hard, you are my model... and overall you are looking like freaking Ragnar 😍 I'd love to see more gymnastics workout on your channel !
please continue for a long time
from a french viewer
Navi Yes it's very good and he speak slowly so for ppl who dont speak good english it's very good !!
Thank you very much my friend! Such words motivate me to do more and more :)
thought more about Bjorn throughout the video, but yea those exercises he showed and his executions are damn inspiring
This is an excellent review. I greatly prefer the rings.
I am a big fan of building your own gear as well. However not everyone have tools/manual skills to do that.
I made mine with Lowe's products. Spent $17.
Now that’s a genuinely interesting topic
Great video as usual, very informative and you raised a few points I had never considered :)
Brilliantly detailed review. Thank you sir! Hello from locked down London.
I've a trx, but I get to do many exercises as a ring. For instance, I use trx to do dips, pull ups, skin the cat and other movements. but I do it only because I trust on my trx that I've many years. But I'll buy some rings now.
Good honest evaluation.
I live in Brooklyn and go to blinks fitness and have been using the trx is really good
Please do more videos with rings like the top 10 exersises or common mistakes with rings! Keep it up
Ok, thanks for the suggestion :)
TrainingPal And I have one question: Can I hang my rings on a uneveven limb?
Great one man, really complete and well explained. Keep it up!
Thank you :)
With some ingenuity you could devise a way to make the handle rotation on a suspension trainer optional, so you could use a false grip when desired - a lock-out option.
awesome video! your channel is full with good and high quality videos, very informative and very usefull! keep going!
Thanks
I tried both, bought them and I prefer rings. TRX bands caused slight friction burns and pain to my wrist and the angle of the hand position is compromised. As an example, I found that pushups limits the angle of the wrist because of the pressure exerted by weight on the bands. However they are good for other exercises.
I've just bought a decent TRX in Decathlon in Bangkok for 15 $ :-)
ring
I haven't tried it, but it might be more comfortable to rest your foot on the strap itself instead of the ring when using your foot Also, it may be good to attach a strap to the end of the strap
The one unforgivable feature of TRX bands for me is the buckle being so low: Perhaps I was doing them wrong due to being used to rings, but I tried doing push ups with the TRX band and I couldn't get the buckle to stop rubbing against my arms. They were bright red and it hurt like hell.
Same here
Excellent Video! Thanks for that!
Perfect video man! Thank you !!!
Great comparison, thank you. I just purchased some rings.
Great comparisob and crazy ring muscle ups bro. immaculate form
I have no doubts, the rings are the best!
I can use rome rugs or clothes on the ring, and it suits my feet at any case when push up, or handstand pushup.
Very well explained! Thank youuuu
Vlad R.
Thanks mate! I'll think about the topic you suggested :)
rosu vlad
Not hard at all, if you suspend the gymnastic rings from a pull up bar.
Actually you can buy door anchors now and attach rings to the door the same way you can with TRX.
cf romanasule :)))
Now I know a little more! Thanks!
I also so pull ups with my Suspension Trainer. I payed 20€ and have it now for 6 years.. almost daily use.. still fine
2:57
People living in the middle of the desert: Fuck...
I wish I saw this video before I purchased the TRX. I love the TRX but the rings offer more options. Very creative.
I use both on my workouts but I think the rings are much better! Thank you for the info! 👍👌
I can do all execises with trx that the ring do it dips and back and front lever
ahmed kotb good for you!
The anchor point in my suspension system isn't high enough for me to use for push-ups (I end up pushing into strap) I have to just put my feet in them and do decline push ups instead.
This doesn't explain why you can't do gymnastics moves like muscle up on TRX?
BearCatPanda the TRX are too weak anyways
I wouldn't rely on the handels to support the amount of force needed for a muscle up
BearCatPanda I can muscle up on them
Very balanced / fair review! Thank-you...
Id prefer the gymnastics rings done alot of my workouts on the rings good on core workout
Very helpful video, thanks and keep it up
Check out the Nossk line of products. Cheaper than rings, better than TRX. And you can add rings to the Nossk straps. You would then have both.
Also, the handles are more comfortable, and the foot slings add versatility.
Durable, high quality materials.
Better than Chinese. Made in USA.
How about adding a pair of cheap pull up handles on ring straps? this way you can do better some exercises like the biceps curl.
I was thinking the same thing!
Or add some rings to one of the Nossk systems.
Nice piece.. decent.. useful.. precise explanation
The rings i just bought are amazing i barely can do dips and my forearms chest and shores are sore as fuck. Plus my other p bar exercices are way easier
before a year i bought a trx for 15$
from lidl really good and it helps me in a lot of exercises.
Lidl does have some great and cheap equpiment from time to time
TrainingPal ikr
I think for my calisthenics routine I'll grab a pair of rings and incorporate my workout mid mountain bike ride. I can put them on a tree somewhere and workout! I don't have a pullup bar anywhere near me until I get to my college :)
Pvc pipe, drill some holes, attach 4 eye ring bolts (i tried 2 but the pipe flexed to much. I weigh 210 lbs), 100ft of 300 lb strength rope, 4 D-rings. Cost me $22.
3:43 i can change my grip so i dont need to hold false grip nor limit my RoM
just dont squeeze the rings too hard
