One of my all time favorite Martin Short skits! The profuse sweat is priceless!
My first and fav one this has to be around 81-83
It's the long cigarette ash for me....
@@KevinAlexander me too!!
"Maybe the ASPCA should have you condemned for being so uninteresting facially."
Probably sweating so much from smoking that whole cigarette in less than 3 minutes.
That ash is legendary.
That's what I was thinking. The heater was filled with exuberant legacy from the Prince of Egypt!
I love how he's on the defensive before the interview even starts. 🤣
Well, that's your opinion. Maybe you're the one who's being defensive.
I know that.
Exactly
Funny, why would you even think that? Maybe you'll being defensive. Have you ever thought of that?
Proof that arguing on the internet existed before the internet.
I know that, you think I don't know that? It's so funny you think I don't know that.
Yeah. It's called "arguing".
@@canaisyoung3601 No it's not! That's absurd! Why would you even say such a thing?

I've watched this skit a gazillion times, & just now realized why they said ASHville, NC LMAOOoo
It is amazing how many people you see interviewed answering questions just this way.
Joe Manchin comes to mind recently. He insists there is going to be bipartisanship even though Mitch McConnell has said no out loud more than once. Joe dances around so much he could be a ballerina.
This character increased my respect for Martin Short. He's using different aspects of his 'instrument' to create this character, and there's no hidden 'wink' to his audience behind it -- he is totally committed.
My favorite Martin Short character ever.
Martin Short is a giant of comedy, I love so many of his characters.
Martin Short’s Jimimie Glick is pretty good. He is such a great entertainer.
@@robkunkel8833 I just finished watching old SCTV dvds,he was always funny on tv,just never a fan of his films,Glick is the best.
Lawrence Orbach is Martin Short's most underrated character. No one does pathetic like that. He is a very sad character, but you can't help laughing at him.
Holy shit - that's Nigel Tufnel.

"But that's okay, can we could use the time to practice. I'm not that strong a swimmer"
Yes!
I still do the hand movements in the pool!
True Story: Martin Short based this character on a woman who worked in the hair & makeup department at SNL. When one of the backstage crew told her about it, she said, "...I knew that of course I knew that how I could not have known that?"

Short is an amazing comedian. He even managed to smuggle into my subconcious that smoking doesn't help to calm down:-)))
I must be in the minority because I don’t hear very many people talk about season 10. It’s one of my favorites, and the cast was incredible. Billy Crystal, Martin Short, Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer, Rich Hall. People knock Jim Belushi but I felt he was solid on the show and carved out a really nice career, as did Julia Louis Dreyfus. You’d be hard-pressed to find a cast that accomplished more, after they left the show, than this group. Plus they bridged the gap between Eddie Murphy and the superstar cast of Farley, Spade, Hartman, Meyers, Sandler and Carvey.
this cast was incredible. but the writing was inconsistent. Dick ebersol hired well known comic actors, rather than Lornes usual m o of hiring tv unknowns and launching their careers. Dick wanted to stay as ep but change the show to being all pretaped. NBC said no, and thank god Lorne came back.
Agree 100%.
Best season ever. It's been downhill ever since
Yes, I absolutely agree. One of my reoccurring favorites was "Lifestyles of Relatives of the Rich and Famous." Another was Crystal and Guest in different jobs talking about how they hurt themselves intentionally, like a couple of masochists, then say, "boy, I hate it when THAT happens."
Really liked that season, I think the fact most of them only did one season may be why they are not remembered as well as they should be.
Robinhood CEO: "I knew that. Why would you think I didn't know that??
Absolutely HILARIOUS 😂. . Grew up on this shit.
36 years later... and the "I did my own research" vibe is still valid.
Impressive how long he got the ash to stay attached
If I remember correctly, he put a wire inside the cigarette to help the ash not fall.
@@habitsrabbit that's gotta be it considering after watching this one, I watched another one or two of him portraying this character and each time the ash was longer then the remaining tobacco and filter combined. To much of a hassle to rely on him just being careful. Thanks
@@jaylew8408 your welcome. Martin short told the story about how that character was based on the snl makeup artist. They actually knew a person like this..
The wire inside the cigar trick is often attributed to the lawyer Clarence Darrow. He supposedly used the technique to distract juries. It's unclear whether this is truth or pure legend.
I read somewhere the trick

There you have it. Nathan Thurm invented the "fake news" defense.
the difference being they all now run and hide behind fox propaganda, and since trump even more ridiculous right wing media. they don't even bother with anyone else, and when they do they're coddled because corporate media wants their access, (it's all about ratings and money anymore) american corporate media is just about useless, the only time you can get anything factual is when a foreign news agency like the bbc reports american news.

One of the greatest and underappreciated SNL characters of all time performed by one of the greatest if not THE greatest.
Seeing Christopher Guest as the Weekend News Update anchor is probably the weirdest thing of his I cold see.

Almost the argument skit from Python. Which is one of the best skits of all time, maybe the best.
Nigel from Spinal Tap
What always fascinated me was how he never flicks the ash from his cigarette and it somehow never falls off. They must have rigged those cigarettes to keep the ash intact all the way down.
This Skit is just Brilliant !!
Even with all that huffing and puffing he burned that cigarette down to the nub lol

Martin Short definitely took a cue from Peter Sellers as Dr. Strangelove!

Short's characters are great. Ed Grimly, Jiminy Glick more recently.
if you had told me earlier today that there's a Weekend Update sketch with Chris Guest and Martin Short on it I would not have believed you
Knowing Christopher Guest only from "Best in Show," "Waiting for Guffman," and "For Your Consideration," I would never have guessed this was him.

Thanks for the recommendations. A Mighty Wind and Spinal Tap are on my list.
@Douglas Davis 😂👍👍👍
He also was a member of the National Lampoon Radio Hour with a bunch of legends and had a memorable role in the film The Princess Bride
Mr. Short was not my favorite SNL player. He was a solo comedian unlike the others who did skits. The Ed Grimley character is a good example, a goofy and amusing comedy act. But Mr. Short's Strangelovian lawyer character is his best. It is not only timeless but a warning, like on the side of cigarette packs, that this is how over half of the Republicans would behave regarding elections and other issues.
I feel like audiences never quite get how hilarious Martin Short is in real time. He's so underrated, and this line-up, too - I always thought this was peak SNL by a long shot. How much talent overload do you have when Christopher Guest has to play straight man?
I saw this live and it's still just as hilarious and true
Perfection.
This was like Diblazio and Hannity going at it.
This character was based on the makeup artist at SNL who had that defensive demeanor. As Marty mentions in his autobiography.
