✶ PERFORMANCE NOTES ✶
Arcology
October 31, 2017
Arcosanti, AZ
I had the fortune of visiting Arcosanti for a few days and meeting some wonderful souls while learning about architect Paolo Soleri's vision of the city as an organism for the transformation of the individual and evolution of the species. It's an inspiring place, and while there, I took the opportunity to create a mandala piece ( • Soleri Windbells | OP-... ) and this modular piece shot on top of The Vaults at sunset.

✶ PATCH NOTES ✶
This patch is my current performance patch, sans effects. After completing the mandala piece I had less than an hour before sunset and the light was already fading. So I packed up, grabbed my synth and camera gear and headed to the highest point at Arcosanti-the roof of The Vaults. To save time I decided to go Eurorack-only, no external effects. Compositionally, I had zero prep. I just turned the system on, quickly tuned, and went for it.

It was this very piece that inspired me to sell all of my rack-mount synths a few months ago and dive into modular instead. Prior to hearing this, all I ever seemed to hear coming out of modular systems was sequenced bleeps and drum beats, but Arcology demonstrates that it is entirely possible to make beautiful ambient music on a modular system. This piece is absolutely gorgeous - full of warmth and wonder as it gently evolves and entwines - great work, Lightbath!
If you haven't already, check out Ian Boddy
@@it194j Thanx: I'd not heard of Ian Boddy before - I checked out some of his music and I'm impressed!
whats wrong about bleeps and drumbeats?
Well said. Well said.
So? How goes the Modular journey Moon?
😃
On my last day of life I want to be surrounded by racks of modules and speaker stacks with a view like this. And lots of cats too.
If only I could have coerced the two community cats up on to the roof to hang out during this piece. If I had had more time, I might have tried.
Don't wait until the last day. 🙂
God, make mine bunnies. The rest is a go. - Rick
I prefer grandchildren over cats... but rest the same
You spelled dogs wrong, but yeah, totally agree :)
This is probably the greatest ambient composition I have heard.
Beautiful put me into a trance.
I like the way a car passes away at 3:00, leaving a dusty trail in the air.
It fits very well with the pace of the musical composition.
It's fascinating.
Thank you.
Oh wow! I had never noticed that! Thanks.
took me ages to find that, but you are right.
I tried but didn't have the patience... where is it?
it’s like trying to see wind on dunes; don’t look for the car, look for the trail of dust
Beautiful. Doesn't matter what you surround yourself with (cats, grandchildren, bunnies) as long as it is loved ones.
You have touched my soul with this music.
Perfect way to spend a Saturday morning: listening to Eurorack sounds from Europe. 😊
Oh my god. I'm now considering getting into Modular based on this.
Fucking right! Before it seemed so complicated and weird but now it’s like 0.0 I’m in love
obviouly there are 57 idiots that watched this before me. you cannot possibly give this a thumbs down. great work! very inspiring.
Easily one of the most uplifting and beautiful modular drone tracks out there. Absolutely inspired, what a gorgeous track.
@lightbath this among the few other ambient modular synth artists is what’s inspiring me to start getting into modular myself. I always felt so bland picking up drum sticks, or a bass because... I couldn’t capture the surreal beauty of the flowing world around me. I’m beyond excited to have finally found a way to create the larger than life sounds I’ve longed for. Thank you for creating music that brings me sheer bliss. Thank you for having unintentionally showing me what it is I’ve been looking for. I hope you have many more a blissful morning like the one in this video.
This sounds make the world “Peace”.
Thank You.
It's a great film because it looks so good in that setting, making it epic. And sounds good too.
I have listened to this so many times, it always inspires me to take my case up on the patio to noodle around. Its performances like this that inspire me. It's timeless! Thank you Lightbath!
Selected ambient works volume 2 eat your heart out
Back for my umpteenth listen of this track, and it never gets old. It's as hypnotic as it is transportive, and to me it's just so, so positive a piece of music. You really made something special. Thanks.
🌟
Lovely composition! 👍 😍 And a wonderful video shot! 😍😍
You are definitely one of most musical modular artists I have heard. Very inspiring!
Reminds me of Eno's ambient phase from the 70s (with Fripp..Wind on water etc).
Gets very quiet that far out in space.
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Monitoring the decaying plutonium. Incredible stuff brother. I'm inspired to start writing music again.
one can easily make a pile of shit with this setup, but you're playing it all with much skill & care.
I'm the guy who's doing shit. Nice to meet you
Would love to get a real modular tho, atm it's VCV rack
🤣
Lightbath ACCIDENTALLY pulls out ONLY ONE wire from ONLY ONE jack.............all of a sudden it starts sounding like a frog in heat that has a severe head cold................HA HA HA HA HA HA HA (8^P (8^P (8^P
@@Zaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap heyho I'm also don't have enough money to spend on a hardware synth
Sweet jesus this is a gorgeous sound.
this was a recommended video that came on automatically while I wasn't paying attention - suddenly right at the end I realized I was really relaxed, so thank you for that! lovely sounds :)
🙌
If you ever have time to upload some albums to apple music, they'd be essentially on repeat during my workday. Great stuff.
Normally ambient music bored my ADHD brain to tears, but the beginning was so beautiful I decided to push through it, and guess what? It never got boring... And it never stopped being utterly, breathtakingly gorgeous. Thank you ♥️
🌟🌟🌟
Lovely piece - and glad the see the top of the Vaults being put to good use. ;) Sunsets from that vantage point never get old!
It’s so great. One of the best spots at Arcosanti... but there are so many of them.
Love it again! One Lightbath a day keeps the doctor away 😀
I feel like you are flexin on us a little. then again I am in a basement with a keyboard... great view/tunes
All y bleeding heart was needing tonight.
Thank you, dear.
I've listened to this many times already, but it just occurred to me that another 20 minutes would have played through til sunset! which would have been the cherry on top of the icing on top of the (multi-layered) perfectly sonic cake!
Yeah, going til the sun had fully set would have been nice. But also, the music had already played itself out and so there was nowhere else to go.
endlessly beautiful sound
More of this, definitely more of this, could listen to this for several hours easily
Oh man, that was amazing, what a great place to perform beautiful ambient! Nice to see you ever changing your modules but keeping the same lightbath sound
So cool seeing Arcosanti on one of your videos; also, the song made my day, thank you for sharing!
One of my favorite places
This reminds me a bit of Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois and Michael Brook's Hybrid album. It has that textural warmth to it.
FINALLY! A modular system that doesn't sound like pacman!
I accidentally had this playing at the same time w/ another modular live jam video, titled "Patch Notes: Hélène Vogelsinger". I had NO idea they both were playing because they sounded so good together! they were in key and everything, super wild. Tempted to keep playing both at the same time now.. maybe after I hear them by themselves first lol
Amazing. And they’re almost the same length, too.
@@Lightbath fr!! a youtube easter egg

Loving what happens with Just friends at around 6:00, great stuff. Improv is what it's all about!
Inspiring. I love that this was impromptu. Great piece.
This clears my mind! Thank you 🙏
So great to finally meet you at NAMM 2018 this year. Looking forward to more synth meetups and hangouts for sure. Incredible modular synth work
Thank you, POB! Great to finally meet you as well ~
This is a sweet clear ambient soundscape. I love the economy of this patch and how it is played.
This is brilliant. Having just bought Reaktor 6 to take my first steps in the (software) modular world- and spent 3 hours only to get a series of beeps - I can only begin to imagine how much knowledge and time it must take to achieve something as beautiful as this. In fact, I don't think I would ever move a cable again if I was able to make such a wonder.
Thank you. And FWIW, in this patch, the black and white cables don't change, but the colorful ones do. It's a performance patch I've developed over the past year designed to produce a variety of results with a limited number of voices.
Be sure to check out vcv rack (open source and free software eurorack style synth) it's closer to the modular experience than reaktor blocks imo
This mechanical device outputs so a kind and generous ambiance that I can feel relief somewhat and voluntarily reflect deep inside, which is similar with the fact that physical factors show beautiful scenes like a sunrise and sunset. That's what I felt and thought to this. So nice.
this is very cool and meditative
Beautiful sounds. I enjoyed this ambient piece very much as I relaxed at home and let my mind wander across my projects and goals
Gave this a dedicated listen today and wanted to comment a thank you for this and it really is quite good for the mind. I haven't tried much like this with my eurorack at all, but this gives me some inspiration to keep the drum machines off and give it a try.
Thanks. Much love to drum machines, but also much love to the space between ✨
Love this, nice work out at the arcology.
This is awesome! I’ve been trying to find music like this for so long. PLEASE what are some keyword tags or other artists you (and others) recommend? To me this feels like a blend of Brian Eno with a fuzzier sound of Tycho. Definitely worth a sub.
Woah, thank you. Eno is a big influence, as is BoC, which influenced Tycho. Try 'Eurorack Modular Ambient' and check out r beny, Emily A Sprague, Cool Maritime, Green-House, M Geddes Gengras, Taylor Deupree, Marcus Fischer... actually if you look up Lightbath on Spotify and go to 'fans also like' there are some good suggestions.
Lightbath appreciate it dude, already on the Spotify lead. Keep doing your thing man!
Francis Jobin
Just discovered your channel, amazing! This piece is wonderful!
Lightbath is a vibe
This was great! Always look forward to your vids.
New musical sounds 👌 I think I can mediate too this 🤔 wow very interesting .
Totally a dozer! Got the sounds so smooth, rich textures evolving over time into deep space!
Thanks for the cool flowing sounds, and reminding me of Arcosanti. I visited it when I was a young teen in the 70's, and am glad it's still there. I have Paolo Solari's book sitting on the bookshelf where I can see the futuristic illustration on the cover almost every day: "Arcology: The City in the Image of Man." Thanks man.
oh beautiful!
This is gorgeous. Thanks for sharing your art with us
i keep convincing myself i dont need to get rainmaker.
you keep convincing me i do.
eventually me having enough money for it will coincide with me being in the second half of that cycle.
eventually.
Yeah, I had let go of mine the following year, but there’s a sound I got with it that I just can’t get now. So yeah, it’s just a bit big for that particular sound I like so I keep hoping that Intellijel makes a Rainmaker-lite version that’s only 14hp.
Beautiful sounds😌
Beautiful. Im transitioning away from electronic instruments in favor for acoustic and cassette... You just caused me to hesitate.
This looks incomprehensible as an outsider, but at the time he hit record, he knew all these knobs and wires like a London cab driver has The Knowledge.
The Knowledge
you and r beny have this shit nailed. :)
modular bliss!! I'm glad I'm wearing headphones while listening.
really inspiring, I hope to add some modules to my setup sometime. This seems like the perfect sized rack. keep on bringin' the spacey vibes!!
Clouds and Rainmaker, a deadly combo
⛈
Now this is what I am talking about, glad to hear some real cool sounds with a modular set up rather than just randoms noise.
So beautiful
This is too perfect
Lightbath beautiful patch! nice composicion with it
Whoa! This has over 300 thousand views! 😯 Congratulations 🥳
Super beautiful, thank you!
Man there’s so many cool places in AZ I never knew about until now. Awesome show
I really love what you are doing here. These days I am less interested in producing music in a studio or in my computer to create a product and more concerned with creating in the moment, improvisationally - turning on the hardware and creating music, not as a means to an end but as the main focus. Question: are you modulating one voice or is this a drone mixing over an arpeggiation or seq? Thanks.
Thanks. Yeah, improvisation is where it’s at. At least for me. It’s a sequence made on the Monome Grid using Kria on Ansible.
Improvising keeps you in the moment. It's a great feeling.
This is just amazing
Love this one, man. I have my eye on that Three Sisters myself. Let me know if you're ever in NYC and want to collaborate on an ambient show.
Nice view mate! Music was cool to..
i love it!!!! thanks for sharing
Beautiful arrangement.
Keep coming back to this patch just amazing.
can't stop listening
Really beautiful
Nicely done! Excellent piece. Inspirational.
amazing work and flow, one of the best ambiant composer for me actually =)
Well done man ! Beautiful in every possible way.
I *love* ambient synths.
Keep returning to this, lovely immersive sounds. I’d love to get my head around the rainmaker. Any tips for really understanding it beyond the presets?
Thanks. I just chose particular taps based on their rhythmic relationship and put BP filters on all of them. Then I’d apply some subtle pitch modulation to everything as well. And that’s pretty much all I ever did. Sometimes I would pitch up and down certain taps by octaves or 5ths.
So relaxing. Love this!
My other Arcosanti piece:
Soleri Windbells - ruclips.net/video/rFeHbZPXUd4/видео.html
I really really would like to get into modular synths, I just don’t know where to start. Like what you actually need to build one from scratch. A guide.
I might make a guide at some point. Til then, there’s my Discord community through Patreon and then the higher tiers for more resources and one-on-one lessons.
Excellent, 'Subbed' & entirely jealous of that phenomenal Modular Synthesizer. Well done.
This is a beautiful piece, thank you
Such an epic performance
Very nice tanks for sharing.
Felt this calming me. Beautiful
Very nice Sir! Thank You for sharing!
very nice very : ) love your system and your vibe.. inspiring...
Quite beautiful.
so beautiful!
Gorgeous.
SIMPLY B-E-A-UTIFUL !!! 95% of the modular synth videos I've seen are of people making these extremely dark and heavy industrial-type of sounds, which most of them do sound awesome. But to me, this video felt like a very relaxing deep breath from that particularly heavy style. Hearing these types of sounds really inspires and motivates me to begin my own modular synthesizer journey. Thank you for this.
PS......I am very much diggin' the Fibonacci Spiral tattoo! If you're a fan of the band TOOL, check out their album 'Lateralus'. They basically constructed every aspect of that album around the Fibonacci Sequence, from changing time signatures throughout the album, to using particular chord structures and progressions, to the actual placement of the lyrics. Check it out....
Thank you! And yes, Lateralus is a masterpiece. So deep. It’s one of my top 10 favorite albums of all time.
Black. Then. White are. All I see. In my infancy. Red and yellow then came to be. Reaching out to me. Lets me see.
Nicely done!
this is so pretty
