    Very clear discussion about "unclear knitting terms".

    Not just clear and specific but smart and analytic! Breaking down English verb pick up and going straight to the source of confusion! This was very helpful and pleasing to watch. Thank you!

    You can add me to the list of those who love your videos. On the topic of picking up stitches, what I always find missing is a picture of what it looks like on the wrong side. I once knit a sweater with a collar looking similar to a shirt collar when buttoned up. The instructions would have me knit the collar, then sew it up after. I was bound and determined to knit on. Easier said than done because the back side of the pickup shows at the fold-over. Ditto with buttonhole edges. When the sweater is buttoned up, okay, but when it is loose and the edge fold over, it's not always pretty! Keep up the good work, we knitters all love it.

    And, trying to knit when abbreviations differ for the same technique, or the confusion if you land on a pattern from the UK when you're from the US. I've been knitting for longer than you've been on the planet, and they can still come up with things that confuse me. Enjoy your videos so much, as you cut thru the underbrush of knitting confusion. A gazillion folks are putting knitting tutorials on RUclips and I had narrowed it down to six that were worthwhile. Had to up that to seven when your site was discovered! Thanks

    I just watched this video again. I find it helpful to be reminded of the ambiguous nature of some parts of hand knitting. That way I don't fall into the trap of always blaming myself for something I don't understand in my WIP. Thanks again.

    This was SO helpful, in large part because you made me feel less crazy about not always understanding what terms mean. I laughed with relief when you said that m1 is ambiguous - I thought it was just me failing to understand! Thanks for this video.

    Hi, Roxanne. Thank you for the prompt reply. The pattern reads: Pick up and knit 88 stitches evenly around the FRONT neck and 34 stitches (which the pattern said to mark off at the centre of the back), thus making a total of 122 stitches for my size. This is even before the first knitted row where a further 12 stitches would have to be increased to make a total of 134 stitches to proceed with the neckband. The best that I can come up with is a total of 88 stitches before the increasing process on the first knitted row after the pickup. It looks really neat after I've done it the way I see it, but I am concerned that the neck opening will be too small and tight.

    IMHO, the topic of this video is one that knitting "gurus" seem to have shied away from - but NOT Rox!! 👍 Too many of the ambiguity booby traps can ruin a pattern, as well as a novice knitter. There are book and script editors, but do you think that a knitting pattern editor could earn hers/his daily bread? 🤔 Great topic, and nice job! T-shirt is boss also!! LOL

    My sweater pattern says " knit stitches from stitch holder, pick up and knit x amount of stitches between A and B. " this is what I'm thinking-- knit the stitches off of the holder then just pick up stitches between A and B. Don't know how you can pick up and knit stitches at the same time. Question= could I slip stitches from holder, then pick up the amount of stitches to the needle, slip next stitches from holder, repeat for amount of stitches required. Then start next row pattern, thanks Peggy.

    Very helpful! Thank you! I do have a question. I have a beautiful cable scarf that I would like to attach a hood to it. Do I make the hood then attach or should I pickup stitches at the center of scarf ( let’s say 10) and gradually increase ( maybe to 20) to make a hood to shoulders? Thank you, Roseann

    I am having trouble with a pattern. It's called Repose cowl by Antonia Shankland using Shibui yarn. It is telling me to pick up and knit its along the edge. When I try and do that it doesn't look right. It is like it is stretching the yarn out and the seam does not look good. Help.

    I have just finished knitting an Aran sweater and I have to pick up stitches for the neck edge. I am concerned that I must pick up 88 stitches just around the front edges. There are only 18 stitches that can be accommodated down the left side, 22 stitches across the bound-off stitches in the centre front and 18 stitches up the right side of the neck. I cannot get more than 58 stitches around the front edges without making a hot mess. I have to take even pick-ups on the left and front slopes because of the nature of the cables and the pattern. Otherwise the sloped edge pickups would be lopsided. How do I solve this problem, please?

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  3 года назад

      88 sts around only the front, or 88 sts in total, including the bound off edge of the back of the neck? Typically, you would need to pick up more for the back of the neck than the front, and it would seem that the additional 30 sts would be picked up there.

    I'm afraid I still don't understand what to do when the pattern says "puk." I am starting a sleeve and I have the completed body of the sweater and I am going to do short rows to make a sleeve cap before continuing down the sleeve. I put my needle through the V of the edge of my fabric, wrapped the yarn around and pulled it through. I thought that was puk but I was told that I had only picked up without knitting so what was I supposed to do differently? thanks for any help.

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  3 года назад +1

      Whoever told you that pulling a loop of working yarn through the fabric was picking up without knitting, they are incorrect.

    • @AbbyBrooklyn1
      @AbbyBrooklyn1 3 года назад

      @@RoxanneRichardson thanks I had come around to that opinion though I will give the yarn store employee the benefit of the doubt and concede that maybe my project looked so bad that she drew the incorrect conclusion that I had failed to pick up the stitches.
