Keep in mind that this incident happened when he was "in the world", "the old man". But it clearly shook him up to come out of the world. He stopped singing worldly music for a long time. He started a church and became a pastor somewhere in Memphis I think. Al Green was from a good strict family. But the world can bring out the worst in all of us.

His road manager helped him cover it up. The victim broke into his home, saw he was in bed with another woman, quietly made the grits, proceeded to his room and threw it on him and ran. Al grabbed his gun which he kept on his nightstand, he then chased her down and shot her after which time he called his road manager. She had written the note some days before the shooting because Al had broken up with her due to a situation with her husband, it was an attempt to get him to feel sorry for her and take her back, so he already had the note in his possession and conveniently used it during the cover up.

Al Greene, huh? I remember my parents talking about his rampant abuse of his wife/girlfriend. What was happening during that time is that men and husbands were beating their wives and girlfriends so brutally, some even killing their women. I remember my parents also said a similar thing about Tina Turner getting beat again and again. I remember my dad saying she will be alright if she could get away from that violent man. I don't know what this story is being told as if she was the issue. It was these insecure dogs in the Entertainment Music Industry who abuse the Artists. My eldest sister went through this kind of abuse and I remember after she was beaten, she later expressed to us (our mother and us siblings) that she thought about throwing hot grits on her violent husband. But my parents encouraged her to leave. My sister suffered from Battered Wives Syndrome so profoundly that while we were in Sunday service she kept telling my parents that she didn't know how she would escape with her child. But my mother said, "Honey, look at where you are. Right now, you're here at church with us with the baby in your arms. Just don't go home." She didn't and she never went back. He was so livid. He told her that he treated her kindly and that she should be grateful that he didn't do to her what some husbands did to their wives by keeping her in the hospital. What?!! What a bastard.

My grandmother (born 1905) spoke of a distant relative of her mother--my great-grandmother--who caused a tragedy. I believe this took place in NYC but I'm not sure. Anyway, the story goes that this relative, a man, was involved in with a beautiful woman from the Caribbean islands. She had moved in with him, against her family's wishes. Her family did not condone living together without marriage. But the woman assured them that she was engaged and that the man was going to marry her. But time passed and no marriage resulted. Every time the subject was broached, the man just kept leading her on. Finally, one day, after speaking to her relatives in the islands who wanted to know when she was going to get married, this woman confronted the man again. Her relatives were anxious to come for the wedding. So that same day, the woman spoke to the man in the living room of the house about making wedding plans. At this time, he laughed and said he had no intention of ever marrying her. She then went upstairs to a bedroom. He heard a shot and went running up the stairs to discover this beautiful woman had killed herself. After he caused such a tragedy, my great-grandmother's side of the family cut off all contact with him. Word was that they man lost his mind after that. I hope he did.
I read years ago that Al allegedly killed her that night! It was hours b4 the cops were called... But, he called a cop who was a friend of his first & the scene was staged! It’s all more to this but, I don’t want to type all of it! It’s a lot🤦🏽♀️
This! And I believe it was her own gun. Apparently, she shot an ex lover in the foot before too. To me, it's pretty obvious he killed her and they covered it up. On top of that, Al green was known for beating women.

Scalding hot grits is about equivalent to being electrocuted. Unless he was coked up, he couldn't have felt that much pain and shot her. But we'll never know. And never heard about Al on drugs...
Mempho musician here. I’m 68 so I know lots about Al Green and you got it perfect. Willie Mitchell (owner of Hi) didn’t put up with Al’s notorious temper. The Mitchell family is first class. Isaac Hayes was a terrific person and I miss him.
I heard All Green state that when the hot grits hit his flesh and began dropping off of him, he saw his flesh, attached to the grits, drop off of him as well.
Men were very abusive back then! Mary had a husband and kids that she was willing to leave to be with Al. I questioned why Al waited hours before calling the cops after she committed suicide. Also, I read Al had another woman there! Al was messy!!! A great singer, but messy as hell! I never believed him as a minister.
Al Green came to Alabama in my hometown to do a concert years ago. Everybody was waiting on Al Green to do his show. It was in a coliseum smaller what he used to and my folks said Al Green said" This ain't enough money 💰 for me" and cancelled the show. Everybody was disappointed.
I was barely born but, heard of the incident when I got older people would joke about it. I did hear of Al Green being a woman abuser and I didn't know she was married.
I’m From the 70s… 60 years old next year. From what I remember: Mary was Married with kids and That Al didn’t even know She was married with kids. She kept this away from him. Gotta remember… there was no social media back then! It was so very scandalous! My Theory back then was: Mary was pissed because The Stewardess flew into town and He Brought Both of Them to his house while he was at the studio. Mary was holding all of Her Emotions in until He arrived Home. I Read back in the Day that when He Received His Calling to Minister The first Pews in His Church were to remain open in Honor of Her Memory. It’s just a sad Story All around… She left Behind Her Children that were stigmatized behind all of this…🙏🏾…
Once a story gets started and when it settles it changes. I recall hearing about this I was about 15 years old, they said she was a married woman he was sitting at the table when she threw them grits on him and they said he threw her out the window, and "they" meaning the newspaper or news, and in his church he has a chair on stage that is dedicated to her, and also was no mention of a third person. She had a suicide note in a purse and having a third person how convenient. It's a good hobby to have keeping old press clippings.
@@vivianclaiborne7653 When he got the shower, he had a friend on the police force, which turn out to be very helpful, in this case. This was early on this info came out and as time goes by changes in the original/begining start to change. When I'm cooking grits a little can pop on my hand and is very painful, take that times it by a hot pot of grits on your back side the " B" is going out the window.
Another guy did this on his RUclips channel! He said it was later discovered that she had a husband and four kids that AL Green didn't know about! His friends, after being around her, said she was nice but very quiet but moody! The other lady, who was said to be a platonic friend, was in his same suite but with her own room! She said she saw Mary, who was also in the suite, look at an already boiling pot of grits! She then walked toward the pot, grabbed it and headed for the bathroom! His friend screamed for him to watch out but it was too late. She threw it on him! She then committed suicide! Later he said on VH1 that he had a terrible time living without her and that he still loved her!!
The song "Still in Love" by Al Green takes on a new meaning now. Why use the very words you've read from a note written to you knowing you don't feel the same way about the person who wrote it? It's just sad really.
Who said those words were on the letter and he sang them from the letter.? Sha la la was the song he supposedly sang about her. I don't think I will ever look at that song the same way again. I am just going to forget it's intent. That was a mistake. That song wasn't about her, it was about me. All Al Greens songs are about me.
The thing was she left her husband and kids for him. She thought she had him to herself but when she got in the car with him he had his best friend in the front seat... He knew what was up as the book says... She was jealous so when they all went in that house together she didn't like the fact that he had his other friend there with them. So he was curious of why she was down in the kitchen cooking and they had a maid. Why would she be in the kitchen cooking... So as he had his back turned she came up in the room with the grits.
Now apparently you have these young folks that know nothing of AL GREEN making up their own stories about him having a gun on his nightstand and shooting Mary after she poured grits on him.
@@Tornado1994 She was sort of a groupie, she caught at Al Green at the wrong time of his career he was enjoying the rock n roll life and just wasn't ready for marriage and definitely didn't expect in his wildest dreams the incident that will follow because of it. @@MOLICIOUS69 That's right. Woodson was also married herself and felt like she was Entitled to have Al Green. Green also had No clue that she was already married nor did he ever think she would assault him by Burning him with Hot Grits. The notion and ludicrous theory that's being pushed on here that Woodson didn't kill herself and that a Man suffering severe 2nd Degree Burns nearly 3rd Degree on 60% of his body could somehow shoot and kill is Incredulous. The Whole Incident was Documented by Shelby County,TN Law Enforcement and Emergency Personnel on Friday October 18,1974 and mentioned that Woodson burned Green with boiling water and Hot Grits while he was Showering because she discovered he already had interest in another Woman a Stewardess named Carlotta Williams. Here's the thing the Documented Incident Report states: Woodson stalked Al Green having flew all the way to San Francisco from New Jersey to a Concert gig he had and by Friday the 18th, Woodson's Husband had tracked her down in Memphis telling Green that he intended on taking her back to NJ, not long after, Green's GF Williams showed up at his doorstep at his Memphis Estate. Green had grown suspect of Woodson and believed she was living a Double Life, so he had lost interest in her and was now romantically involved with the Brass Carlotta. Mary Woodson had snuck into a Cab with Green & he had allowed her to come to his Estate. He says, she just went Mental when she discovered Williams and at the point asked him if he wanted to get married, he told her "You're already married, your husband wants you to go back to New Jersey, I can't be involved with you, but we can still be friends". When Green attempted to check on Mary Woodson, he discovered she was in the Kitchen boiling Water, he asked her why and she sheepishly replied "IDK. But I would never hurt you, handsome". Green exclaimed "Wait, What?" He was confused and trying to figure out what was she thinking or planning. He then decided to go to his Master Bedroom and get Groomed and Shower, while he's in his Underwear brushing his teeth, she followed him and he saw her reflection in the Bathroom Mirror, she had a blank look on her face and was holding a pot of Grits and Boiling Water with both hands & without saying a word, she just hoisted it at him. He was in so much shock and agony, that Carlotta came running in from the other Guest Bedroom, a moment after that, they heard 2 loud bangs, Green suspected that Mary had taken her own life and her body was found in a side Room laying on the floor.
OlI was kissed on the cheek by Rev. Al Green before he left R&B. I still love his music & can sing a long with most of them! Wow-Back in da day! Memories! ♥️🙏🏽♥️
Who knows if he killed her, but if he had the gun and access, I'm pretty sure he would have if he could have. The scalding may have rendered him unable to shoot her.
That is my logic as well- grits are hot and hold heat for a lllloooonnngg time- I can’t see you summoning the strength or wherewithal immediately after that 🤔
@Lynn B. Not true. No telling what she would have done. She probably wanted to hurt him and that is why it was done like that in the bedroom. Doubt he did it because he would have been in a lot of pain. But then again you never know. The two of them were toxic and needed to be alone. Sad situation.

Know that I have heard the OTHER side of this story… and his violent behavior towards women leads me to believe yes his gf threw grits on him but I believe he shot her and killed her because she threw grits him… his gf wasn’t the type that would kill herself by way of a gun her weapon of choice was pills… I believe he lost it and was extremely angry… I would love to hear the flight attendant side (if she is still living)… his guilt of killing her turned him to Jesus
What??? She left a suicide note 3 pages ...plus she previously attempted suicide before... plus her ass was married with 4 babies and didn't even tell him so she was a troubled woman on a mission to forget her family and be with Al green
She obviously was mentally ill. If not him she would have done it with someone else. Not excusing his bad behavior but she also had issues. She was a married woman with kids. Her butt should have been with her spouse and kids.

Someone I know grandpa and uncles know(or knew) this man . ALLEGEDLY…He didn’t like to pay people in his staff and band. I heard this man was a hot mess.
Although I'm a huge Al Green fan, it's way beyond ridiculous that the assault charges against Al Green were "dismissed because of conflicting testimony". Well, that's unbelieveable! If that happened in every court case, all charges against everyone, would be dismissed. The job of jurors, (or a judge if the defendant goes that route) is, after listening to all of the witnesses, and then carefully considering the evidence, and next try to determine just who is lying, and who is telling the truth. That is what is commonly called a he said, she said. That's how the judicial system works (or doesn't).
Her sister knew about the grits because she'd probably had done it before. How do you shoot yourself several times? Why would you have to push your way out to get to the bathtub and your already in there? Al's math isn't mathing.
There was a woman in bed with him at the time that was scalded her as well. She had a severe burn on her leg. She was from his home town. She came back to her home town with bandages on her legs. Green lived in GRAND RAPIDS, MI WHEN HE CAME TO FAME. THE WOMAN FROM GR, MI TOO.
Get your facts straight..Al green came 🏠 with both of them after recording SHA LA LA in the studio along with STRONG AS DEATH SWEET AS LOVE...he already informed them that no kinky nonsense was going to go down he had 21 bedrooms.
I agree- if hot grits are thrown on you and you shoot them; you are definitely trying to defend yourself- who knows what is coming next and who is going to wait around and find out? 🤔

I'll never joke about this again. That's crazy. What did the suicide note say
😢😢😢I'm so sorry for that loss.
I read years ago that Al allegedly killed her that night! It was hours b4 the cops were called... But, he called a cop who was a friend of his first & the scene was staged! It’s all more to this but, I don’t want to type all of it! It’s a lot🤦🏽♀️
How did she know where his gun was kept?

I believe you because his story doesn't add up. I think it's more about the story. Him killing her seems more plausible in my opinion
That's what I thought 🤔 but he knew that she was suicidal, I'm sorry but I think that he may have shot her and had the crime
This! And I believe it was her own gun. Apparently, she shot an ex lover in the foot before too. To me, it's pretty obvious he killed her and they covered it up. On top of that, Al green was known for beating women.

Al Green did an interview for SEPIA magazine. That he sold his sold to the devil.
I love the background music!!!
I love the way you explain the tea, great storytelling 👏🏾👏🏾
I only knew about it the grits thank you for sharing 😊
@@MOLICIOUS69 Woodson was Yandere obsessed with Al Green. She blew her own Brains out.
@@Tornado1994 She was sort of a groupie, she caught at Al Green at the wrong time of his career he was enjoying the rock n roll life and just wasn't ready for marriage and definitely didn't expect in his wildest dreams the incident that will follow because of it. She also had mental problems which is totally overstandable considering how society is currently.
