This was a huge pivotal moment in the Naruto story. I still remember reading the manga and watching every episode Saturday nights as a kid As Sasuke just for revenge and jealousy or Naruto increased I knew something huge was coming.
I only Sasuke went the other way after jumping off the rooftop and avoided looking at the water tanks. Perhaps things would have been different, if he didn't have another feat of Naruto's superiority fueling his jealousy and sense of incompetence.

I dont think it was that simple. The way the anime depicts it, makes it look a lot slower, but it's implied to be in real time. Like a split second, there would be no time to even stop, especially at the momentum both of them were going
