The public have spoken, we want it rebuilt not redesigned!!!
Joey Ohalloran - And what has it got to do with you?
It will be restored not redesigned.
Most of the visible parts that burned were 19th century, not medieval...so resbuilt to what?
YES!. This is a historical landmark not an architects test facility.
@@antipyrene The stained glass rose window was original to the building Only the spire over the crossing was not original. The roof was most certainly their since the building was complete.
"...and how the reconstruction will look, has not been decided." I beg to differ. Hasn't the French Parliament already voted and agreed (pretty overwhelmingly) that Notre Dame needs to be rebuilt exactly as it was before?
Yes they did.
No they didn't. They agreed to remove a part of the "rebuilding law" that was supposed to reduce the time needed but allowed the government to bypass a large amount of restrictions. But that doesn't mean it will be rebuilt identically. Since an international architecture contest has been organised, we can fear it will lead to a post-modern abomination...
I made a donation thinking it would be rebuilt exactly as it was before, but President Macron doesn't want to miss the opportunity to print his mark in history by making a modern Spire...
Pardon my English, I hope I'm understandable ;)
@Allô français canadien a twat?
;
Finally! French government did something right
Rebuild it exactly as it was!
They cant do it the way it was
The biggest challenge with that will be the woodwork inside the roof called "The forest" which consisted of a forest worth of logs and planks. HOWEVER they could use aluminium beams as a replacement. It won't be EXACTLY the same, but it also won't be visible to the public, so it doesn't matter.
@@jonas4288 thats bad
Nous l'espérons tous !😔
@@jonas4288 Not to mention a modern structure would prevent a repeat of what happened. There isn't even enough old growth forest in Europe to rebuild it exactly how it was.
Good luck from USA. We would not be a nation without you. Thanks for the Statue of Liberty too. We should help with this.
Michael Hurley - Yes! Do you know how to start a GoFundMe page, and get it attached to these videos?
@@calvinhobbes5686 No, but good luck.
These Monuments are linked in another way, too. The statue of liberty was build by the same company as the decoration of the spire.
@@calvinhobbes5686 why is everyone donating money to the cathedral and not for people who are actually in need of it? Even if their insurance doesn't cover the costs, the french state will.
The French liberals want it back so they could give it to Saudi Arabia.
I hope from this we can appreciate architecture like this more.
@Winston Wolf ^
My Lady dont worry, we take care about you. Love you, Notre-Dame from France.
it's a miracle ND is still standing !! With the God help, we will rebuild it.

@@johnperic6860 Some people take literally that sermon about God watching over every little bird and flower. Tell that to the flocks that get sucked into the engines of a jet plane every year.
True Gothic edifices as seen in the old Cathedrals of N.West Europe are very resilient. I recommend a google search for “Cologne Cathedral WW II photos”.
@@gondolacrescent5 The Cologne Cathedral is about 60% not True gothic but built in the 19th century as they finished the Cathedral. It was not damaged in the War because thank god the british had to use it as Orientation point. If they didnt they would gladly destroy it as they did with the rest of Cologne and Germany.
Notre Dame should be rebuild the way it was... and not "improved" upon, as some suggests, with horrible minarets!
Tito B. Yotoko Jr. exctly
They should add fire precaution and protection but otherwise leave it untouched
Sicuramente diventerà un minareto perché ho letto che molte chiese cattoliche sono state trasformate in minareti o quant'altro.
You do realize, that the collapsed spire wasn't original either, right? It was rebuild in a neo-gotic style in the mid 19th century
@@lukaskirchhoff7901
Be that as it may, you realize that the design was gothic so it still fit the overall design of the Cathedral.
And sorry to burst your bubble but still way better than a minaret, no matter your desire to have one built there!
Yes, rebuilt, not redesigned, except where special reinforcement is required.
Yes, but this is also a massive feat for architecture and engineering. Please understand that an intense fire changes the structure of the rock that survived, too. So everything has to be carefully taken into account to literally achieve the miracle of resurrecting Notre Dame de Paris... It may take 5 years, or 10 years, or more. But it will be done exquisitely, brilliantly, precisely and -- with God's help -- successfully. Each recovered broken piece can be saved for a future museum exhibit or other appropriate use. The French people's deputies in the government voted on behalf of the people for a faithful, exact recreation of what was destroyed. That is the plan. It will still be a miracle when it is done. I urge everyone to donate whatever they are able to contribute.
So, maybe everywhere? Nobody knows how brittle the stone has become yet.
I see no reason why the roof structure should not be of steel. The part that "shows" can still look as it did before the fire.
@@johnqpublic4055 Because steel has massive problems with heat. While steel melts at around 1200°C to 1500°C it looses most of its strength at around 800°C (your average camp-fire temperature). No firefighter can estimate how much weight the roof can still support when looking at it.
Wood on the other hand burns relatively even and the burnt pieces form a protective carbon layer around it, meaning everything under it still has near 100% strength. Therefore you look at the thickness of the beam and roughly estimate its remaining strength.
Yes, with a steel roof fires are more unlikely, but if one were to break out the damage would be a great deal worse.
@@Ruhrpottpatriot I have seen analyses showing that the medieval builders put the high point of the stone buttresses in the wrong places on the walls. As long as they are going to spend so much money, perhaps they can rebuilt the buttresses (with steel frames in them), abut them against the walls in the proper places, and make them strong enough to hold up a steel roof - all with preserving the historic look.
People argue that it should be redesigned because the spire was redesigned in the 19th century. However people don’t realize that the gothic revival style of the new spire was meant to go along with the aesthetic of the whole cathedral, if it was redesigned nowadays it wouldn’t match and would just look funky.
^
François Miville yes cause it would take weight off, be cheaper, and would not be flammable. Honestly I don’t care what it’s made of if I can’t see it or it’s far away like the ceiling.
With a little knowledge, a pencil, paper, ruler, compass and square there’s no reason on earth someone could not currently design an equally attractive, gothic spire that would compliment the rest of the structure as well as the previous 19 th century spire did. Great Art is the product of ecstatic inspiration “to make” something of transcendent beauty.
LucidDreamer Entertainment It may seem odd, but the combined weight of the spire and roof are required to keep the structure intact. If the weight is reduced by using, even another similar but natural material, like zinc, the building could suffer structurally as the weight of Zinc is considerably less than Lead. The only solution is to again use lead and ignore the nonsense that stipulates elemental lead is poisonous, toxic and dangerous...lead is only dangerous when it’s a compound.
i am so grateful that there are many skilled and profound architects that are striving to rebuild this magnificent cathedral , my heart broke when I first saw it engulfed in flames. However, seeing that the cross was not touched was really beautiful. Not to mention, no one was injured thank god and alot of the cathedral's relics were safe
Heartache. Heartbreak. (I've been inside Notre Dame 100's of times. I miss walking inside of it, with all of what's left of my heart.)
hey
You are lucky that you did get to see it. I never saw it but was about to go but then this happened. : (
Every Thursday my big brother will go to Notre dame de Paris for Bible studies, like any other catholic kids in the neighborhood, he brought a drawing of Notre Dame that he made to show to the priest in charge who kept it for himself. This fire made me cry like i had lost a dear friend.
I was there in 1980. It's such a beautiful building. I would hope they would restore it to how it was before the fire rather than making changes...
Why repeat a design that basically exploded? They're not going to use wood in the new roof.
Joseph Astier why don’t they make it more “inclusive” because thats what we all need
@@muhammadabadi6410 Why not both?
Joseph Astier if the previous design wasn’t inclusive enough then i don’t know what to say other than were fucked
@John K Was that snarky comment really necessary?
Rebuild this masterpiece to the way it was.
Without the wood though. That fire was nearly impossible to stop.
@@josephastier7421 they should just rebuilt it with concrete and just put wood on top of it so that it still looks the same but won’t be burned as easily
@@ab_12_8 That kind of a double roof is kind of what they had. Anrched masonry roof and then a wooden attic over that. The attic burned away, and had the masonry roof not been there, the flying buttresses would have pushed the walls into the hall and the whole thing would have come down, possibly taking the bell towers with it.
Has anyone discovered who set the blaze? It was without doubt arson as the timbers of the roof would have been impossible to set afire without an accelerant, which is also indicated by the color of the smoke during the fire. Someone or some cause is to blame and this needs to be discovered before more great architecture is damaged or destroyed. There must be a reckoning for such wanton destruction. There isn’t a single person acquainted with accelerants who would doubt this wasn’t arson in addition to anyone aquatinted with how oak ages, arson is not the question, the only question is who and why.
I think we know who and why don't you?
You are absolutely right. And yes, we all know precisely who did that horrible thing but, in France, everyone keeps silence, especially the Government. So sad and so shocking !
The Muslims!!!! Why?? To take over France by destroying it’s history .There you go.We ALL know! Macron can go to HELL!
Actually, they have ruled out arson. No accelerant has been found. It also started on a portion of the roof that very few people have access to.
They have been able to track it down to either cigarettes, or an electrical socket.
Basically, it has been tracked back to the people doing the restoration. Lots of cigarette butts were found in the area the fire started. Meaning that the people doing the restoration have been smoking there a lot. It was also found the the power tools being used were in excess of safety limits for the sockets.
How can a cigarette butt start a huge fire like that? It happens all the time.
We had a bridge here that was really old and large portions of it were made of wood. It constantly got set on fire by people just tossing their cigarette butts on the ground. Usually after a sporting event. They'd get kicked around, or blown by the wind and end up on some wood and set it a blaze. It was such a problem, that they finally just rebuilt the bridge.
I'm sure a simple Google search would turn up many buildings new and old being burned down by just a simple little cigarette butt.
high technology yesterday, high technology today, this is the destiny of the beautiful Notre-Dame ! still very long life to you Notre-Dame !
Still Glad that the original bells are still intact and no one died in the fire
Thank you for your comment, Shane. There are some concerns over lead that was released in the destruction. People are also discussing how to rebuild the cathedral to secure its safety, which is not a given. We recently featured an article on these two questions on our site that you might find interesting. It's written by Agnès Poirier, a writer with an upcoming book titled 'Notre-Dame: The Soul of France.' Tell us what you think: www.ft.com/content/7e81e6ee-d94c-11e9-8f9b-77216ebe1f17.
There will be many more of that died of lead poisoning who visited in the coming centuries there is no way to remove all that dust. In the streets have been closed off in certain areas around the church because the high levels of lead is just beyond toxic
I don’t know if it is true but i read somwhere that some of the the wooden structure came from trees of the 8th century!
This is true :)
Yes
True, the trees were already 300 years old when they constructed the cathedral
France has more trees than you can wave a stick at (pun intended). 32% is forest, of which at least half is broadleaf. Europe has been expanding its forests for a few decades. The situation in France is that a goodly amount of forest is privately owned so no one was in a position to say if the wood was or would be made available.
I've seen a number of major church/cathedral restorations since living here. You can rest assured the work will be of the best quality.
I m with this situation in Paris in death Notre - Dame very sad so sad!!! I wish you Notre - Dame new life and good health non death!!!!
May God bless, help and protect everyone who participates, in any way, in this noble cause. Merci à tous! Thank you for this video, FT!
When I heard they were considering making the roof area "modern, reflecting a broader world view", I was horrified. To redesign this masterpiece would be a crime against humanity. It would be akin to topping the Great Pyramid with the Golden Arches of a McDonald's restaurant.
@Fluffy Hamster; If one wants stupid you're their go to eh...
@Fluffy Hamster you do realise the right in France is liberal?? just because the US is extremely backwards doesn't mean the rest of the world is...
Lots have been said by the media but no the framework of the roof will be made in oak wood like the original. Oak trees have already been selected and coordinated by France Bois Forêt for the provision of 1,000 century-old oak trees coming from both public and private owners from all over the country. The mobilisation around the rebirth of Notre-Dame de Paris is national. Individuals donated half of the felled oaks, with the National Forestry Office donating the other half.
4,000 square meters of woods and forests will thus be used to rebuild one of the most beautiful monuments in France.
I heard that Disney was gonna do a live action remake of the Hunchback of Norte Dame. Guess it’s going to take a while before they can work on it
Disney is irrelevant. Disney is about making money by selling a product. I know this from personal experience. Working at Disney teaches you it is hardly the "Magic Kingdom."

Unless they used another cathedral, like Notre Dame in Reims.
The restoration must leave Notre Dame exactly as it was before the fire.
Why? It’s been added too and rebuilt over many fires throughout its life. Why not add to it again instead of living in the past. The past is dead literally destroyed. Move on create something new
alan B because it’s history
Ayuwoki though I agree it should go back to the way it was before the fire, your argument that “it’s history” doesn’t make sense since historically, Notre Dame was being significantly altered every other century.
The cathedral has been almost entirely rebuilt less than 100 years after its first basements and has been highly improved many times over the years... the gargoyles has been built in the 18th century despite being a typical Middle Ages figures... a little piece of the 21th century people would be perfectly legitimate... maybe in the inside since it was not spectacular besides the big glass roses...
Why? A cathedral is a living building. Why can't it evolve along with the times in which it resides?
Imagine if we put this much effort into restoring the rain forests
nature heals itself better than when humans mess with it; we just need to stop chopping down more old-growth forests with all its biodiversity, stop building parking lots and fast-food factory-farms
For people that say that we could use the money for the ocean or the amazon or something please read the following: A billion dollars is objectively a nice amount of money, but if you were to donate it to a cause like an ocean clean up foundation or an amazon rainforest foundation it wouldn’t be enough money to make even a small dent in the current problem. To clean all of the ocean you would need much more money, but also the plastic and pollution would still come in from people like you and me. Plastic flows from rivers and oceans and chemicals come from factories from all around the world. The amazon forest (a billion dollars donated) would only make a small dent in the fires… which would be reversed, why? Because the citizens of Bresil WANT the fires to happen, they want to burn the trees, so plant trees and they will burn them again… It’s horrible, but we need to do the same thing: hit at the source: do something about Bolsonaro.
I will assume you are young, less than 15 because you don’t know the value of culture and buildings. The world is complicated, If we could fix the amazon and solve climate change, we would. You will learn in time. The poor, once again, would be the same story, without eduction, it’s hard and almost impossible to get a good job.
Also to completely seal you, this money was donated by millions of people. It is the people’s choice, the french government has nothing to do with this money.

Natural Cambion i highly doubt that that happened. Notre dame is a major part of history, no need to be religious to recognise that.
There are a lot of people now a days who are not religious, but still love Notre dame. Yes, Notre dame is still used as a church but it’s not just that. It’s part of France’ history. No one wants that gone (except maybe extremists, from both sides)

A masterpiece, it can never be replaced. It will never be the same.
It will be the same in construction details. As much of the same materials as can be salvaged wiill be used in the reconstruction will be restored. What has been rendered unuseable will be replaced and likely "Aged" to match the present interior.

Google : « don pour Notre Dame de Paris».....👍
Having visited Notre Dame Cathedral years ago, the fire was disheartening. My surprise and delight at seeing that one of gargoyles survived, although not in the location where I had my picture taken with it.
In France, soon after this fire, we have passionate carpenters enthusiastic about the idea of rebuilding this roof structure in a way identical to the original one. That part was very old and dated from the origin (not the fallen spire that was a reconstruction of the 19 th century, the original one, of simpler aspect, had been removed because in bad condition few years before the revolution). It is the disappearance of that ancient frame of roof that has been the most shocking for French people.
Some owners of oak forests were volunteers to give trunks of oaks. In some (State) oak forests in France trees are felled each year at about 200 years old, within the limit of the growth in volume of wood of younger trees in the same forest, so there is no loss of wood. These trunks of woods are popular (especially for barrels for great wines) and even now sold to China. Originally the trees ('quercus sessiliflora" in latin) had been planted, under the reign of Louis XIV, to in the future make of them ship masts. But times have changed.
It would probably be more prudent to rebuild a metal roof. Actually It would not matter because the roof structure would not be seen, no more than formerly. Other cathedrals in France, of as great artistic value and maybe even more than Notre Dame of Paris, such as Chartres and Reims, already have roofs in metal structure following wars and fires.
But it is true that Notre Dame de Paris cathedral, symbolically and historically because it is situated in the capital of the country, has a special value for French people.
I hope they can reconstruct it as closely as possible to the original. Not only is it a place of worship, but a genuine creation of artfully, masterful beauty. It's a treasure not only to France, but to the whole world.
Thank you for keeping te French commentary, rather than a voice-over. It made more of a pleasure to watch an excellent video and concentrate more on it. I speak and write French fluently and never spoke English till age 14.

There should be a public shaming of those who pledged restoration money and then fail to place this money in trust accounts under supervision of trustworthy accountants. I was there a few weeks ago and it was so sad seeing this magnificent building in it's current condition. Sometimes I think architects believe going 'all modern' in repair work is the best option. It might be cheaper in some cases, but will it last the test of time?
Planes, Trains, Everything. Modernization of the Cathedral will last longer than keeping the old design. Although i like to see the cathedral unchanged, for the cathedral to survive an unpredictable future, it must require some modernization
In the future, the millennial generation of France will be able to look back and be proud that they were the ones whose expertise & dedication restored Notre Dame. If you want passionate engineers, you need look no further than France.
"Why? Why is this happening to our generation?" Huh? This is merely an accident/negligence on the part of human beings. It could and has happened to many historic buildings over centuries.

This is neat! And I love the narrator's accent 😄
I liked the New designs with a glass celing. The stained glass is ruined anyway so they might as well let in some light. The New shining tower locked also great. Luckily the parts that burned was not the best parts of the building. The building can be improved.
It seems that aluminum or steel that are fireproof should be used to reconstruct the roof just like it was before the fire. Steel would have been used in Medieval times had it been available. The first step is to restore the roof, which would be used to support the restoration of the vaults.
If only humanity cared his much about restoring the rainforests

Why humans can't even preserve their history?
VKAnthems Neoliberalism mate, why preserve when you can make a quick buck
Geez!! How big IS that place??
It's a shame it wasn't laser scanned before the fire.
0:50 they STILL have the old bells there. That's a surprise.
Tbh I think it would be cool to redesign it, fusing modernism with historical buildings.
We can always make some sort of museum like the _history of the Notre Dame_ or something like that. That way, we won’t erase history completely.
In my opinion, it shows how history changes over time.
While i also agree with you, i dont want them to make the roof, glass. I saw a render were the roof and spire was all glass and that is an abomination.

Well, whatever happens, we just got to cherish the fact that they rebuilt it in the first place.
I’m still thinking about the glass spire in the modern rebuild though. You gotta admit, even if you don’t want a modern rebuild, it’s pretty cool.
Maybe we can fuse glass and the historical version of the roof together.
Merci beaucoup. Hopefully something like a go fund me fund can be used to help in the reconstruction. Certainly people around the world would want to help.
The stinky smell and sickenning vaporous stink coming off the four or five hundred year old woodden beams in a cathederal in London I visited a week after this fire proved to me that It was a blessing in disguise to get rid of old wood thats diseased by time.
I wonder if they will rebuild the arcs following the original idea of using Wood instead of iron.
Toujours pas de nouvelles pour savoir ce qu'il s'est exactement passé 😝😝😝🤩🤩🤩
Ptdr ma gueuse XDXDXDLOL
Rebuild or redisign dont care i want people responsible for fire to pay! And answers
Will San Chapelle be the next target ??
My heart breaks...as well as a little of my faith in humanity....fire ravages the Norte Dame Cathedral in Paris. French Tycoons and Billionaires out pledge each other for reconstruction funds and notoriety. Now that $ is needed, the donors don't want to pay anything until they can see proposals, estimates and invoices.
Do the job right, don't skimp on quality, build it just like it was. From ..Canada and all of Americas.
The translation isn't on point... for exemple at 1:20 he is not saying "because they were too close to the fire burning for several hours inside..." but "because they were too close to the spire wich was burning inside the cathedreal for hours after collapsing".

Architect: Notre-Dame Mini Mall coming soon!
Mais !? C’est pas blesipo les mecs et meufs!? Je béton sur des comm giquema. Trop cherbran pour moi toussa toussa. Je parles au jeuns m’a couille .
i am thankful for technolgy to rebuild as original..
The only thing they should change from the original is use modern structural supports like metal reinforced walls so it’s stronger for the future without changing any visible aspects
