What i love about demon slayer is the characters. Sure they are not ocean deep characters who you have to analyze to understand them, but in my opinion they dont have to be. They are people who have lost loved ones and understand pain, so they do their best so others dont suffer the same pain.
And they are so full of charm i just can't help but love them

What carries demon slayer is the emotional weight of the series. And that’s the complexity.
No other series can get you as emotional invested in a scene as fast as demon slayer and keep you invested in a short period of time & key words “ keep you on an emotional pendulum constantly rooting for characters as if you were them or their family . & not knowing if they may die “ but still having respect and honor for them if they do knowing they worked for it and deserved it.

I personally believe people just get upset at how popular it is, so they immediately hop on the hate train to be different and it shows their superiority complex with animes. Demon slayer has unfortunately become one of those things that's both overhyped, while being over hated. It does not deserve the hate it gets.

Im one of the ones I feel im in the sweet spot.
I enjoy it, but also don't go foaming at the mouth for everything this show gives us.
Like the latest episode - it was good and definitely got me excited to watch the upcoming planned trilogy, but seriously? 10/10 on IMDb? It was 8/10 for me.
I try not to gatekeeper what people can enjoy, I just think fans give into the hype train without an iota of thought.
One can enjoy the show while notcing the flaws AND while choosing to continue it, but to ignore them or act like it's still a 9/10 show in spite of them is silly.

i hate when ppl say that demon slayer isn’t deserving of great animation because of it’s basic story. so only complex and deep stories deserve good animation? i think if a studio is gonna adapt a manga, then it deserves a chance to be brought to life with the best quality as possible. it’s so disrespectful to not only the animators who spent a lot of time working on it, but the mangaka themselves and the hard work they put into coming up with their own story

Good analyses. One of the reasons I think DS appeals to so many people is the character dynamics, their struggles, their trauma and how they deal with that depending on their personalities and circumstances, it's very human, very relatable. That's literally most anime. Demon Slayer is *intentionally* generic like many other anime. Saying that it appeals to you because of its generic aspects doesn't tell people why it appeals to you more than other anime. If Demon Slayer was one of your first anime, then I would get it. The real reason why Demon Slayer is popular is because of its visuals and animation (and luck with the time it was released); not it's story.
When it was first trending on twitter, was it trending because of its story? No. What was trending was the animation of the Tanjiro vs Rui fight with no context.
The manga's rating increased by almost full point after the anime was released. When mangas get more popular because of their anime, their scores usually *decrease* a bit due to it becoming more aware to people with different tastes, so why the difference? Did the people that were reading the manga before, who could have dropped it at any time, just happen to have a lower oppinion of it than the average person? Did the manga suddely get better even though it was currently at the generally agreed upon worst arc of the anime (which coincidentally happens to be the worst animated arc, despite it being the second-most plot heavy). No. The ratings went up because of the hype surrounding the anime, which is also why people were rating the Mugen Train movie 5/5s and 10/10s when it didn't even come out anywhere, yet.
I find it infuriating that people can't just like something for what it is. There has to be more, always, because a simple reason makes you look "shallow".

maybe Demon Slayer for some western audiences doesn't mean much significance due to the cultural differences, for Eastern audiences we shared a lot of common cultural / spiritual experiences, thus it's not only the story or the plot that captivating us but the poetic acts, resilience, resolved even every single character's name have meanings.

    I would like to add.
Someting i dont think people realize is just how damm hard is it to write "a simple story". Is extremely easy to get all twisted and and tangled in your your own writing, getting lost in the sauce; introducing and dropping elements all willy nilly, and bloating your own setting.
Gotoge dosent get enough praise of how efficient their writing is. For a short example: Rengoku was formally introduced to the plot in chapter 54 (Technically we met all Hashiras in 44 but that was more of tease) He dies in chapter 66. 12 chapters, thats it; 12 chapters of which most are fighting and battle. And yet? people were bawling their eyes whe he died.
In only 12 chapters Gotoge managed to introduce, develop, explore and finally send off a character so more completly that what other authors do in years. And thats just 1 of many examples. Thats craftsmanship.

HTTYD uses some of the most cliche tropes out there. Liar revealed, weirdo outcast, a boy and his dog. But it has amazing reviews and 99% on rotten tomatoes because it has one of the most sincere story telling in recent animation film history. It goes in-depth into these simple tropes, weaves every scene with beautifully crafted animation and music. ALL of it carries the movie. It’s not just one thing. An anime carried only by its animation would not be as consistently popular as demon slayer is.

There's honestly not even that much separating Demon Slayer from it's contemporaries like Jujutsu Kaisen or My Hero Academia, or even with older series like Naruto or One Piece. All of them have extremely simple and easy to communicate premises barring maybe Jujutsu Kaisen a little bit which doesn't sound very interesting because it lacks a strong narrative hook.
People like to hate on Demon Slayer because it's got no complex Power System akin to Hunter X Hunter or Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, they like to pretend other series like Jujutsu Kaisen do even though it constantly boils down to 'do whatever you want and the author wants for the plot with very slight side effects on the user'.
Demon Slayer has way more subtle and consistent storytelling conventions like pararells to religion and philosophy, especially coming from True Pure Land Buddhism which most of the characters in the story show reverance to. Tanjiro's direct pararell to a Bodhisattva, Yoriichi having a similar backstory and legacy as Siddhartha Gautama, Gyomei being compared to the Four Heavenly Kings, Doma's entire character being based around a False Bodhisattva. These are all things Demon Slayer weaves with enough nuance and meaning that it flies over most reader's heads, compare it to again Jujutsu Kaisen which creates a pararell between Gojo and Buddha Gautama in the most obvious and 'hype' way possible with close to zero nuance (Honored One Quote and Gojo's Awakening pararelling Gautama's Enlightement under the Bodhi Tree), or Naruto having a whole character (Hashirama) who's entire arsenal is just literal buddhist gibberish and buzzwords/iconography.
It even comes down to the use of Wisteria Plants and their connection with protection and the Buddhist Pure Land's Kingdom. The story never explains because it expects the reader to not think in powerscaling brainslop mentality about everything but it shows repeateadly that Shinobu's use of the Wisteria Poison as a weapon is something shameful and religiously disrespectful since it's supposed to be used for protection and not weaponized which opposes Buddhist philosophy, and then you have a hundred people in every discussion going "Why didn't Shinobu tell everyone about her plan?" or "Why don't the Demon Slayers all use Wisteria based poison all the time?"
The expectation and assumption that Demon Slayer is this nothing shonen with no detail or love put into it and that people enjoy it for just being fun and simple is so exhausting, it's got nothing separating it from everyone's favorite Shonen except how the Western elitist audience treats it for being popular and gorgeous

Thank you so much for creating this video. I love Demon Slayer a lot. I binge read it when it was only 102 chapters in. Initially because of how it was drawn, I thought it was a shoujo manga set in the Meiji or Taisho period. I never expected to get into it as I don't really like reading Shonen.
But I finished those 100 chapters in one sitting. I was so engrossed with the story. Ufotable was able to bring out the emotions and feelings I experienced reading it to a different level.
But I wish that more ppl would read the manga, too at least just the ones animated. There are some expositions that Ufotable wasn't able to include because they don't have a narrator's voice.
The Author, Gotouge was 29 years old (almost my age) when Demon slayer started its publication so she grew up with the same anime we love as kids- Naruto, Bleach, Jojo, etc...
When I read it in its entirety, I felt that this was her love letter to those anime we grew up in. Demon Slayer felt nostalgic for me. I didn't feel like it was ever competing with the "Big 3" it was more like a modern take that captured the essence of older anime.

    First time here hi!
Haven't finished watching the video just yet but I believe from what I've seen so far I fully agree!
Ontop of the whole "A simple story doesn't equate to a _bad_ story", I also kinda see demon slayer as an animator's passion project / dream! While the story may be simple and such, it clearly captivated the animation studio and everyone enough to give them the passion and drive to make it what they've made it (I'm not a manga reader but from what I hear the manga isn't... it's artwork is _alright_ to put it loosely; not great but nor terrible) and I think that deserves a fair bit of praise too.
End of the day for me it just depends on what you look for! If I compare anime to music I would say Demon Slayer is best compared to a phenomenal instrumental. Not everyone will appreciate it because it's lacking words to make / have a story (Anime equivalent: It's story isn't the most groundbreaking thing) _but_ the way the instruments (Anime equivalent: The visuals and animation) are played, composed and orchestrated is a spectacle to hear and witness.
Similar case comparing it to painting haha! It might not have hidden meaning under hidden meaning under layers of visual metaphors, but the lines painted, the phenomenal detail and vivid colours used so perfectly that it immerses you, is still a sight for the eye to behold! Just depends on what you like to see in art
Anyway anyway back to watching the rest of the video haha

Yeah I'm going to have to entirely disagree with the premise that Demon Slayer, or any story really, is "simple." Kinda negates the whole interpretive aspect of literature as an artform. I think one of the main issues is that people conflate "story" with "plot" as if they mean the same thing. I think it's fair to call the plot simple, but the story? As in literally every single theme, allegory, symbolism, characterization, lore, worldbuilding, foreshadowing, development, revelation, etc.? Yeah no, the story is incredibly layered and filled with nuance.
I think the issue is, most viewers outside of Japan don't have the cultural understanding to actually take from the story what exists within it. Like every single allegory and allusion to Shintoism, or the cultural motifs that add a shit ton of depth and meaning to characters, their designs, certain events, etc.; Buddhist themes and lessons; I could go on.
And of course, also the conflation of plot and story. So, for some reason, if people don't see ample amounts of plot twists, foreshadowing, reveals, etc. - if there aren't a shit ton of moving parts or sociopolitical involvement, then the "story" is "simple" just because the plot is. I think people lack the ability to read subtext or digest stories on a thematical or narrative level. I think most people just have a simple understanding of the story, because they view it only through the lens of "plot" - which is already the simplest and easiest thing to understand within a story. It's literally just the "what happens" in a story.

Love your comment but just wanted to point out that while Demon Slayer does have a number of strong pararells to Shintoism and it's definetely the most commonly used religion to draw pararells to in Anime, Demon Slayer's narrative is actually heavily based on Buddhist Mythology and Philosophy, down to characters like Doma, Yoriichi, Gyomei, Tanjiro, Nezuko and Kagaya being direct pararells to buddhist ideals or important figures! It's also the religion that most of the characters in the actual story follow and show reverance towards (Gyomei, Genya, Tanjiro, Sanemi, Akaza, Etc)

a lot of people don't have the context of the east in general (i commonly see this when it comes to mitsuri and the downplaying of just how progressive and impactful her backstory is). and also, while it is fun to speculate about shinto and buddhist references, demon slayer is pretty much perfect when it comes to the themes of "eternity" and passing down a gift (of life, and peace in the case of reincarnations), and not a single wasted sacrifice. it's so frustrating that it gets so overlooked for people to complain about "plot holes" most of which are already explained in the story anyways, or random shit like "breathing style should be real, thats so lamee". i just can't wait to watch and hear the narration of chapter 205.6.

Imo, people who think the writing in DS is basic, or poorly written have too shallow an understanding of what constitutes a well written/well executed story. While simple in many ways in actuality it is very well written and executed from a narrative standpoint. To me, it does a wonderfully job of making you understand why characters think and act the way they do, visually illustrating themes and/or character values (big credit to UFOtable there) and maintaining tension in relation to stakes at both a seasonal and series level. I feel I could write a small essay on the last point alone but instead I want to quickly talk about one thing I believe is very overlooked about DS but really interesting and has a significant effect on how the story plays out and why for many people feel the story is both unique and familiar.
    Tanjiro's character arc.
Majority of characters in fictions, regardless of genre, tend to follow the positive change arc in which a character starts the story with a flaw and by the end overcomes it allowing the them to achieve whatever the main goal of the narrative is. In these stories conflict is used to push (positive) development in the character. I believe Tanjirou follows a flat or testing arc instead making DS a typical shounen story but with an atypical main character as far as character arcs go and this has an interesting effect on the story because at their core stories are about people, the decisions they make, the consequences that come from those decisions, how they handle those consequences and the larger effect of the wide world. In flat/testing arcs characters have a truth they believe and conflict revolves around challenging that rather then fostering specific change in the character with success or failure in obtaining the main narrative goal hinging on the character not changing. In other words, In a positive change arc characters changes the world by changing themselves while in flat arcs characters change the world by staying as they are.

I enjoy the average isekai slop, i can enjoy a bellow average story without hating it, Demon Slayer is just a anime that doesn't deserve the fan base that it has imo, it's getting carried by it's animation and that's it, you have to REALLY shutdown your brain if you want to enjoy it, it's characters are extremely plain and have no meat to them, they only get one personality trait and that's it, muzan is an extremely boring villain and the list of problems keeps and if anyone has problem with what i'm bringing up becuase "it's too shallow of an opinion and doesn't dive into the problems" is because i dropped the anime, i ain't watching that anymore, it's boring.

I'm a battle shonen fan after all, and the formula is exactly what I'm here for! I'm not mad that it's successful, or any of that. As a veteran anime watcher , I do think the plot of demon slayer is kinda of mid tbh
In terms of world building and plot even Naruto is more complex. But it’s still interesting to watch though
Demon slayer is animated by Ufotable , say studio that animated Fate Stay Night unlimited blade works, beautiful animation ! ( Naruto animation always mess up sometimes which ruins amazing fight scenes in the manga sometimes it’s hard to take it seriously .
And the story is very interesting . It has those “ silly “ funny movement that makes it not boring and interesting characters ( it’s not always “ Tanjiro biases “ I spoiled myself entire show and I try to rewatch it I still find some parts very entertaining .and characters you can sympathize with understand why they make the choice they make
It’s not the best story , there are many plot holes and problems . It’s still very enjoyable and worth a watch .as a veteran anime watcher I wouldn’t recommend big three because how longgg it is ( I spoiled myself entire show of Naruto after a quarter of Shippuden because I can’t keep up with literally …. 400 episodes … we don’t have that much spare time .i still love Naruto though
But I would definitely recommend demon slayer for people who want to get into anime (please don’t try to spoil yourself entire show like I did ) since it’s less than 100 episodes and still kind of interesting .
And how they tell the story … was smooth . Like when Tanjiro met ghost of Sabito and the minute he defeated Sabito he sliced the boulder … I was like wow … didn’t expected that’s how they tell the story , that transition , man
And as a woman I definitely prefer Shonen more than Shojo . Since Most Shonen has amazing plot twists and actions that gets you hyped up while most Shojo just …. Slice of life in high school

I also feel that while their is a cast of stand out characters Tanjiro amd hismain trio have too many of the successes compared too the hashira especially. (i think this becomes even more glaring in arcs yet to be animated)
I love the aesthetics of the series and many of the character moments are excellent but I personally feel it is mid in terms of narrative for me, enjoyable but not the best imo.

  • @krnatsu
    @krnatsu 5 месяцев назад

Demon Slayer is charming precisely because it is a simple story. You can easily get behind the Demon Slayers and be against the Kitsuki and Muzan.
Tanjiro just wants to protect his sister, same with Nezuko to Tanjiro. Zenitsu wants to be someone people can rely on and prove he has worth. Inosuke needs people who he can call his family because he's never had one. Conversely, Muzan is someone completely self-centered who only views others as tools, even Kokushibo who Muzan deems as the most trustworthy of his Demons, is just a piece on Muzan's chess board against Kagaya.
I would rather take a story like Demon Slayer, that takes simple ideas and themes and does them beautifully, as opposed to something like Back Arrow, that fumbles being unique and complex miserably

I agree that there is nothing wrong with simple stories especially in demon slayers case with the animation but my opinion(Im throwing this out before completely watching the video.) Demon slayers has blatant flaws after the Mugen train arc that I just couldn't overlook. There are a few reasons but i'll just throw out the biggest one I had an issue with. The lack of tension and the injuries that the slayers take. Tanjiro could have 5 whole swords stuck in his body and power through everything with the power of friendship? But in season 1 and mugen train you can see that he had to get through alot of his fight with genuine tact and so on. That's the whole reason for why I liked Demon Slayer at first personally. If Demon Slayer had stuck to its guns I would have liked it alot more.

If anything, Genya is the one who is withstanding life-threatening attacks because he can eat demon flesh and use their powers. Genya and Nezuko have both saved and blocked life-threatening attacks for Tanjiro in their fights against upper 4.

The simplicity of Demon Slayer isnt the problem. Its the half-baked setup and payoff and *unfinished* writing that is what keeps it being Mid.
Deadpool was an incredibly simplistic movie, but it still used good and at times clever writing to keep it engaging.
Demon Slayer has to use non-canon, visual-only mystical flourishes to look more interesting than it actually is because the author couldn't come up with an actual reason Sun Breathing worked better than any other type, plot devices that appear suddenly with no setup, OVAs and after-show skits to explain exposition the writer can't explain IN the story because the main character doesn't think or ask questions, and simple-minded characters who previously had no stated motivations gaining storylines randomly without foreshadowing. The story reads like a hyperactive child saying "and then, and then, and then" instead of an adult saying "So this happened because this happened because this happened." No cause and effect, no setup and payoff, and fans have to make up their own and call that "thinking for yourself" when its really finishing the writing the author just didnt bother to do.

Her not needing to eat human flesh makes her as powerful as an upper moon despite needing a ton of human flesh for demons to be strong and powerful. Another plot hole is the defeat of an upper moon over the past hundred years with Daki and Gyutaro losing to literal children when previous 7 Hashira were killed by Daki whose weaker than Gyutaro yet lost to third bottom rank members of the group and while Tengen did most of the heavily lifting against Gyutaro it's completely ludicrous that Tanjiro was needed for the final blow along with out of nowhere mark power up, if all they needed was three bottom rank members and a hashira then that the corps was trying hard enough to win or are just outright idiots that never tried to change their tactics.

Thus it goes beyond the goal to entertain. That trait is better than any series with complex plot whose only goal is to entertain.
