Bought my first air rifle yesterday so trawled youtube for a few intro videos - this is the most useful! Great balance of effective advice/tips while keeping concise. Cheers!
Very helpful. Thanks! :) I have a Nikko Sterling center point scope on my crosman 1377, zeroed in at 10m and I don't have mildots to help with hold over. By using this method I can guesstimate where I should aim with my reticule. I can hit a 1inch thick stone at 20m with hold over. Also on the range card you can put angle of incline and a diagram of the reticule aim point, so that you will know where it will hit dead on. It's very satisfying judging holdover without mildots.
I have to watch this one a couple more times, as I find that it will stay in whatever memory I have if I do this. Thanks very much, this is a great little shooting air , at least for me it is.
Twenty five yards is actually your *second* zero. I used Hawke X-ACT software, putting in muzzle velocity and ballistic coefficient of my Polymag Predator pellets. I experimented with different zero distances until I settled upon 15 yards, with 35 yards being my second zero. I printed-out the chart and remember my holdover in inches at 5 yards is 1" and at 10 yards is 1/2". Between 15 and 35 yards it only rises to a maximum of 0.4" at 25 yards. Then it just drops like a rock. At 45 yards it drops an inch and at 50 yards, two inches, but that's bigger than my yard.
@@duraes207 It depends upon the velocity and the B.C., but you will get one zero on the way up and another on the way down. Mine was a bit over 800 fps.
During the off season when squirrel is over and I just want to be in the woods, English Sparrows are unprotected and abundant so I sight it in at 9 yards and aim for the top of the head if closer then that, I never need more than that, H&N Baracuda Hunters 18.21gr work well for me at these closer ranges and are still accurate when I re sight it at 25 yards for squirrel season. I like your trajectory tape on the stock idea.
Good info. I don't really shoot guns but shoot with a bow and arrow. The technique of pasting up the sight info on the gun stock is similar to sticking the info on my bow. Thank you.
Good video. Looks like my 1377 results with 600 fps. I read UK air pistols are set to 500 fps max? Still a punch with 22 cal. The 177 needs more speed to get power. 600 fps is plenty for my pests with 177 pointed.
If your wondering where to shoot when you don’t know how far your shooting just aim center of mass. Pellet guns are intended for small game if you hit it it’s going to die. Unless you barely nick it
There expensive but you may want to check out a product called "pellet pen" i just bought one and tried it a few times and it is nice for quicker reloading. Not perfect but it beats doing it by hand. Especially in the cold when you would usually have to take off your glove but not with the pen. Good video by the way

Aim for the white markings at the base of the neck. They won't spasm about like they do with a head shot and it's an instant kill. It's like nature painted a target on them.
Very well explained. But one thing I don't get, the "cheat sheet" at the end- where it shows eg 5 yards is below the 25 yard (set) one, shouldn't you put how many of those horizontal lines (sorry I don't know the name) down from centre that the 5 yards (for example) is hitting at? Otherwise, how do you know how much further down 5 yards is from 10 yards?

atzerath Well, good luck with that opinion. Give me 1 reason why that statement is true other than just some chest beating, because i wouldn't believe it for a second. Reason 1 from my point of view, i believe we probably have more hicks, most of the time they can shoot pretty straight even after a few. Reason 2, we have a larger standing military, hence we have more veterans, most of which are usually trained to shoot even in non-infantry military occupations.
atzerath Well first off i can say, as a USMC Vet (hence the SN), a firecracker at my feet wouldn't make it so i can't shoot straight (which is why we would train under those conditions, exactly so we could shoot straight) and for the most part in my experience the vast majority of vets are taken very well care of, we're not helpless and damaged. It's hard to complain with free healthcare benefits, as well as getting school payed for. Almost every one that i have served with has actually been very successful after getting out. That's the difference between thinking you know about a group of people, and actually knowing. Also, yes you are chest beating, and it doesn't matter whether you're British or not. Maybe the phrase eludes you, it is bragging or boasting that one group of individuals is better than another. Which is what you've managed to do in both posts, only one of which made any sort of valid argument. I would reasonably entertain the idea that UK air rifle hunters are better shots and those of us here in the US based on the fact they use smaller caliber rounds at a slower velocity that are less forgiving to shot placement. Therefore they have to make sure every shot counts. Except in your first post you never specifically mentioned shooting with air rifles, just shooting in general. Now that is what an intelligent response in a conversation would look like, however i don't feel you'll be taking that route anytime soon, seeing as how you proceed down the path claiming we use grenades and shoot mice with pistols, that is more along the lines of an argument my 5 year old would come up with. I would venture to say anyone reading this conversation would say that me being "ameritrash" doesn't sound like the one being full of myself, as opposed to the undefined culture you claim as your own. And i am in no way trying to change your opinion nor was i offended. What i was wishing you "good luck" with was making any sort of a valid argument that the average UK shooter (in general) would "wipe the floor" with the average American shooter. You are correct in the fact that every person is entitled to an opinion, unfortunately some opinions do show how entirely ignorant someone is when they can't make a clear point without trying to insult the person they are talking to. Hi, and thanks CHOPERUS23. That scope is quite an old one, a Nikko Stirling Nighteater 4-16x44. It has a parallax adjustment wheel on the side, which I find helps me focus when I'm filming through the scope. And yes, I do like that reticle as it helps with gauging windage as well as holdover.
Is it the LRX Reticle James? I like the fact that there are many longitudinal holdover points. My Mtc Viper has only half of these which does restrict the hunting range on my Fac mk2 Rapid.
should you not have done this before you went out shooting? i do it with all my guns and i keep a refferance chart with each gun just to remind me. i feel its basic stuff. if the shot is not safe , don`t take it . that`s standard . but not knowing ware your pellets are hitting at different ranges is something we should all know.not knowing ware your pellet will strike at different ranges is just lazy . do your homework . you owe it to you quarry .
I almost died laughing watching this video. I usually stick to Ted's Hold Over channel but he mentioned you Brits weird shooting habits so I decided to look into yall. He was right, the shots you pass up and more to the point, the reasons you pass them up are ridiculous. You worry about pass through, which if a person was holding the bird when you shot it might require a pair of tweezers and a bandaid. But the you switch around and won't shoot because you only take head shots, the thinnest part.
He is shooting in a suburban back garden not on a farm. Apart from the fact that it is illegal for the pellet to leave his private property you try getting a pellet out of a child's eye and sticking a bandaid on that.
I get what he's saying BUT seriously, how are you going to hunt anything like this? I have a 25-30 fpe .22 and with that I would be more concerned. With my 15-18 fpe .177 I would've taken the first and second pigeon with no shits given.
