It's just a little tight when you have to break out the backhoe. Nice implementation of that seal tool. I'm sure I'll make one next time I do a cylinder.
Hi Gary . Nice job . I always use blunt screw drivers to get the seals in as well , never had an issue . Cat wiper seals you have to use emery paper to polish off the protective film before the locite . Cheers .
I have a old backhoe and got a cylinder repair a few months ago. It cost me $800.00 to get it rebuilt. If I can find new seals next time I will try to do it myself. glad I seen your video
Mark, there’s lot of places you can find seal kits. And it’s always nice when you could do a job yourself and save a few bucks. Thanks for checking out the video. Gary
Gary, you have a way of making the nastiest job look easy . Here I thought I was getting close to the record for "cheaters" ..... now I realize I wasn't even close ! As usual, your videos are both spellbinding and entertaining . Anyone who's missing out on your channel is doing themselves a disservice . Keep 'em coming, Gary !
No matter what you are working on it seems that I am always picking up some good tips. It would be great to see you work on the hydraulic valve assembly.
Nice repair and build of the tool. I recently resealed a couple of cylinders on my Case wheel loader (similar, yet slightly different system than Cat); it's about time to do a couple more.
Woohoo...a new old iron machine works video! 👍 P.S. That’s not just “in the tight class”...that’s holy sh*t tight when it takes a backhoe boom pushing down on a 5 ft long cheater bar to break that cap loose. I’d say the rust holding that cylinder cap on was stronger than some of my welds. Lol
Are you also making a video of restoring the valve assembly ??I hope. Haven´t worked on hydraulic yet but it is coming my way soon. Thanx for sharing. Very nice channel
Mark, I was also hoping I was done doing cylinders. But that’s where JACK comes in, some young blood to do the grunt work. Your small engine is looking great. Also been enjoying you on a ARW on Sundays. I appreciate you stopping by the channel. Gary
Cool video sir realy enjoyed watching it have done a few cylinders myself love doing them and you have some nice tools there i myself got s bunch of big wrenches and 1" socket sets for the big nuts and bolts
You got me beat on cheaters. You might have the world record there. I have done a few of those. Need to do my stabilizes on the backhoe. I hope you do a video on the valves. Good one Gary
Great video. I learned quite a bit. I use the ant-seize stuff all the time. Funny thing is that my Dominatrix uses the same lube. I can attest that nothing seizes and I've never had to visit the ER! OK, just kidding.
And we appreciate you. Great demostration of cylinder teardown and refurbish. Have done a few pneumatic cylinders in days past that were rusted up like yours. Thanks for the look.
Awesome video Mr. Gary. I always enjoy watching you do your thing. Always a learning experience. I worked in the oilfield back in the 70's and we had a huge Climax pump that had 2.5 inch rods and 8 inch pistons. Not nearly as complicated as these cylinders but the same principle. We had to get some big cheaters most of the time also. We had a 60 inch pipe wrench and would use the boom line from the rig to pull on the cheater.
Nicely done! 3:08 that is a very nice way to say "Quit yer b|tchin, I actually know what I'm doing." 6:36 AND long sleeves and pants, unless you LIKE picking wire strands out of your legs and arms... (learnt from experience)
Now how to design a parts washer and blast cabinet to be built in on a service truck. Or build a pallet loading version with the wash tank on the bottom and the sand blast cabinet on top.
Hercules hydraulic seals Florida has all seals packing orings parts made in USA. By size or machine Getting cylinders off machine and apart is the issue . Pins and heads seized up. Oy vey!!! I had to cut some apart reweld . Especially in salt areas PS : CAT service recommended JB weld for rust pits on seal surfaces even on chrome rods . They sell a product actually for that. I put new seals in hot water to make them pliable to install. On JCB backhoe there are hidden retaining pins under piston head wear ring band. You will never get nut off rod unless pins are removed Also never use Chinese orings . Get quality rings from reputable source. Don't ask why I say this..lol

Max, customer got aftermarket seal kits. They were ready to install.

Super video production/discussion/demonstration/build…thanks for sharing and great tool build/discussion
Thank you my friend
very Nice implementation of that seal tool Gary, thanks Mate.
Special tools, are usually time savers, but home made tools are always money savers!
Appreciate the never seize for the next guy.
I just hope I’m not the next guy LOL Nice to see you got the mower up and running. Always nice to have you stop by Brian
Great stuff Gary we really enjoy watching your videos thanks for taking the time to make them
Doug, thank you for watching them.
I have rebuilt my share of hydraulic rods and I enjoyed your video thanks Gary
Thanks Joe
I remember those vintage of Proto tools. I like using silicon grease on the backside of the seals
No matter what you are working on it seems that I am always picking up some good tips. It would be great to see you work on the hydraulic valve assembly.
Thank You Andy. I will have a video of repairing the valve assembly.
@@OldIronMachineWorks looking forward to it Gary.

Thank You Lars, there will be a video on the repair of the hydraulic valve. But it won’t be a complete teardown. You will see in the video.
Well hell. If I knew you did cylinders too I would have had you do my fork lift cylinders. :)
LOL Don’t you want to ask what I charge first.
Always nice to have you stop by Tom.
@@OldIronMachineWorks I know you would give me the friend rate. :)
@@hilltopmachineworks2131 That's right up there with the family rate LOL
ALways nice to see you've posted something Gary. Loved the backhoe assist for loosening that cylinder top.
Thank you John
Thank you. glad that you are doing good.
Thanks Mark
That seal insertion tool is genius. I enjoyed watching you do the work. Hope I never have to do it myself!

Hello Gary, I made my hydraulic seal tooling myself to, we are machinist. Great to here from ya, great video, keep'um coming.
Thank You Sir
Cool video sir realy enjoyed watching it have done a few cylinders myself love doing them and you have some nice tools there i myself got s bunch of big wrenches and 1" socket sets for the big nuts and bolts
That was a rough job. I think those seals were a bit close to done.
Harold, They definitely did not have much life left in. Hope you’re doing well. Gary
No made in china pipe wrench can do that!! Good old USA tools right there. Great job Gary.
Thank You,
I appreciate it. Gary
You got me beat on cheaters. You might have the world record there. I have done a few of those. Need to do my stabilizes on the backhoe. I hope you do a video on the valves. Good one Gary
Randy, I have had to use our forklift at work to break some things loose. Always nice to hear from you, hope you’re doing well. Gary

Nice work Gary
Thanks Jeff
Aluminum pipe wrenches are too good, especially when you are fooling with 48 's . Cheers!
Agreed, the older I get the more I appreciate the aluminum wrenches. Thanks for checking out video Steve. Gary

Thank You Danny. Back in the day it was common for me to use the crane on my truck to assist me in breaking stuff loose. Gary
Absolutely wonderful Gary, thanks for sharing. I use to rebuild tipping trailer rams years ago, always very rewarding
Big love to you and yours
Thanks Ralfy. Is it true ? Your giving up working on bikes so you will have more time to work on cars LOL
Always good to hear from you. Gary
@@OldIronMachineWorks lol, to be honest if I had the right setup I wouldn't mind it so much
Great video thanks a lot
Thank you John

Was that a cape chisel or a half round chisel you were using to collapse the dust seal?
Thanks for the video!
Wayne, I was using a cape chisel. They’re one of my favorite chisels. Thanks for checking out the video. Gary
Did you prime and paint the parts that you cleaned?
Michael, the costumer was going to paint them.
If force don't work you need a bigger tractor.
LOL Thanks for stopping by John. Gary
