That's a good observation Russell. Here is the problem with this text. When they translated the text from Greek to English they had to place a comma because greek doesnt use commas. They found out that the comma was in the wrong place because Jesus didn't died that day but the thief did die that day. So the text should read like this, "verily I say unto thee today, ye shall be with me in paradise. "
Jesus didn't go to Heaven when He died. He laid in the tomb and resurrected before sunrise Sunday [ the 1st day of the week] morning. (See Matthew 27:57-28:15)
