GSB migration started from Saraswati river (that gave the name Saraswat), to Kannauj, to Gauda kingdom (areas of modern Bihar and Bengal) adding the name Gaud, then finally settling in Goa. During Portuguese invasions they migrated to Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Kerala. They were businessmen, and also administrators in Maratha Empire - Satara, Kolhapur, some in Pune and most in Gwalior. GSB of Shaiva and Smartha tradition are non-vegetarians but those following Vaishnavism are vegetarians (like most other Brahmins). As a GSB, its good to see GSB food on your channel.

Your explanation is correct but just to add to your text, even the people following Vaishnavism are non-vegetarian. My family follows Vaishnavism and we have always been on hardcore seafood diet. 🙏🏻

Gowda means north Indian. There were five Dravida Deshas. We have five Dravida Brahmins. The Gujrath & Sindh (Gurjara), Maharastra, Karnataka, Andhra and Tamil (Tamil and Kerala). Then there were five Gowda Deshas. For some reason, Gowda Brahmins were allowed to eat meat, and the Dravida Brahmins were not allowed to eat meat.
Konkani has words and similarities with Suraseni, Magadhi and Mahastrian Prakrit.
GSB cuisine has many similarities with Oriaya cuisine and we even use similar words to describe some food.
GSBs are a mixed lot from north India. Migration happened from the Saraswati river basin, Kaunaj and eastern Gangetic planes of Bihar & Bengal.
When our ancestors came and settled down in Goa, they were in the middle of Dravida deshas. It was not acceptable there for Brahmins to eat meat. So they prefixed "Gowda" to continue to eat meat in Dravida Desha, and simultaneously claim Brahmin status.
Please note that many north Indian Brahmins are allowed to eat Mutton and fish, but chicken and eggs are taboo.

Brahmins eating non-veg is very common.
Maithil brahmins of bihar, brahmins of bengal assam and orrissa have fish as their staple diet.
In uttrakhand garhwal area also non veg is common amongst brahmins and so is the case with maharashtra, goa n andhra.
This whole propaganda against non-veg food is being propgated by baniya/jain media.
India has always been a mix of veg /non-veg cuisine.
Every area depeding on its tarrain and climate has had its distinct set of food items.
Thats the beauty n charm of indian food.
Lets not destroy this n lets not indulge ourselves into this unesessary n unwanted debate of veg vs non-veg eating.
Food is a very very personal choice and article.

Just check my reply. Kashmiri Brahmins are Saraswats. They probably migrated north from the Saraswathi River after it dried up before 2000 BC. Some others migrated south, east etc. I do not think GSB's migrated from Kashmir. Well, I am a GSB.

    • @Anonymous-pj1xk

@@prashanthkamath7437 You are right. Ancestors of Saraswat Brahmins who follow the Chitrapur math, claimed that they were descendants of Kashmiri Pandits(Kashmiri Saraswat Brahmins) left Kashmir and migrated directly from Kashmir, to the South India. First small batch of Saraswats from Saraswati river migrated via sea route from Dwarika to Goa, after Saraswati river dried up before 2000 BC, now about next two groups of G.S.Bs, their ancestors migrated from Saraswati River ,after river dried up before 2000 BC, then migrated to eastward towards Goud desha(U.P.(kanoj), Bihar(Mithila)/Bengal) lived there for 1000s of years, then one group from U.P.(Kanoj) migrated to Goa and then other big group from Bihar(Mithila)/Bengal(lower Ganges) to Goa. All three groups mixed together by intermarriage, to form G.S.B. an Umbrella term, also know as Shenavi(Shahannavi)community. Later they divided according to their preferred religious practices( Vaishnava/ Smartha). There is a hypothesis that ancestors of C.K.P.(Kshatriya Kayasthas) community migrated with the ancestors of G.S.Bs.(from U.P.(Kanoj) ) from Kaya desha(U.P(kanoj) to Konkan region, C.K.Ps. ended up in the North Konkan while G.S.Bs in the Goa, similarly Goud Brahmins (Kudal deshkar) and Daivadnya Brahmins migrated together from lower Ganges(of Goud Desh) to Konkan.

Love all your food episodes but just 1 suggestion, please maje geberous use of the other hand or use a spoon while digging into other food rather than using the same hand with which you are eating

@@santhoshv3028only GSBs who migrated to South eat fish. No other brahmin community in south eat fish.

@@ArchanaDhanvantri2117 Gowda means north Indian.
GSB's did not migrate from Kashmir. Some Saraswat Brahmins did migrate to Kasmir and became Kashmiri Brahmins.
