Peter Draws tried this pen out and had the same leaking issue.... THEN I saw your page and the review of the pen and had to come check it out! The left handed threads had my OCD nerve tingling! Love your show!
Your analysis was very insightful and I agree with you. Used to work as an aerospace engineer and highly specialized and high tensile fasteners were part and parcel of that gig. There were so, so many thread pitch, diameter, class of fit, thread form combinations. I got used to designing thread reliefs by giving them 4 threads and about 0.010-inch (on the diameter) below the minor diameter. The CNC folks had plenty of time to stop the threading cut without resorting to max deceleration. Sorry, sort of nerded out there. I dig the double helix reservoir, interesting bubblige as the ink flows out of the pen. 😁👍
What a cool and unique design. I think I would just turn the pen all day to watch the ink. Loved the demonstration with the air bubbles displacing the ink.
Deeply impressed in terms of a pen with a filling system that out foxed an expert like your goodself.I have seen these pens before in a Goldspot catalogue. 6 'O' rings makes finding a leak a bit tricky? All up a very intriguing design that includes the way it's been put together and works.
This is a cool pen. I have one of the previous version so the cap and finial are clear. I have to say I prefer that. It is one pen that really does look better and is more fun when it isn't completely full. I didn't have as easy a time cleaning it out as you did/ I thought I would play it really safe and used Waterman Green since Waterman seems safe in almost everything. I had to use pen flush over and over again and let it soak and flush and flush. I haven't tried another ink because I really don't want it stained. Maybe using the ink you used is the solution or maybe there is some sort of difference in the material or build of the older version. I don't know. Thanks for the video.
DB- Thanks again for your engineering analysis of the pen. You have to be the smartest fountain pen reviewer on RUclips. Overall, I do like the pen. It's almost like something one would buy in a Museum of Modern Art gift store.
LOL, I don't know about being the smartest, plenty of smart people out there. I just talked about things I notice as an engineer as that's my particular area of expertise :)
I have the original model. I have only inked it once, with Noodler's "Forest Green", which stained the pen. I still love the pen and find it to be a very cool concept! Thanks for the detailed review ... always learn something!
I wonder if they made the thread OD without a relief so that it would stand out less and be less noticeable when gripping the section? I know some pens' threaded sections can be annoying when using the pen. Makes me a bit worried about the thread life, but still can't wait to get mine!
I think that was the idea, but I think it should have even just a little relief. Maybe not the full minor diameter, but close. Depending on the thread profile used, the major/minor thread diameters aren't too far apart so won't have a very noticeable step up
@@Doodlebud As a machinist, if aesthetics was the issue, I would try to make another taper as the relief for the start of the threads maybe? But like you said, can't be that big a difference, I'm sure they considered it so we'll just have to see how they hold up!
Pretty cool pen. I was wondering if you or others have had any difficulty with "burping" from this eye dropper fill? I've been pleased so far with the Opus 88 pens perhaps due to their shut off valve or other design features that seem to minimize burps (never had one with Opus). Other "eye dropper-able" pens I have do unfortunately "burp" from time to time -- I guess my hands are too warm.
Ah come on Doodlebud... you always fill eyedroppers with "nib up" :D (teasing). I believe PeterDraws did exactly the same thing, was quite funny to re-see it :) - funny in a good way, wasn't making fun of you Doodlebud.
No worries, was just excited to use the pen. If I stopped and thought for a second I'd realise filling from the back is like just pouring ink into an open straw 🥴
A colleague has a similar pen from Additive pens. He inked it with Akkerman Oranje Boven. After a week or so, the ink became cloudy. It seems that the ink is reacting with the inner side of the ink reservoir. I'm curious if this pen from Hex Pens does the same...
Doddlebud, Do you know what happens when you don't watch the doddle's video first before inking the evolved? you ink it from the end instead of the nib side and all the ink flows out the nib like a faucet on to your leg and on the floor. Thank god i was wearing shorts that look like they came from a garage sale and the ink went on the garage linoleum instead of the wife's carpet. Guess who is taking a shower with the lava bar?
He's a controversial figure. Yes he was a Nazi but there is some nuance as he also contributed greatly to science in the US. He launched the first ever US rocket into space. Most people probably don't know he was in the SS

Von Braun never paid a price for that. All I am saying is that of all the guys that @Doodlebud could have quoted, Werner von Braun was a bad choice.

I was watching the bubbles and that's when I got the idea to see if I'd be able to see the effect. Was cool to actually watch it happen

1. Including spare parts always makes me nervous.
3. Looks great rolling off your desk.
The double helix ink reservoir is absurdly cool.
DB, I love the engineering analysis of this cool pen!!! Love your angle you bring to the pen community. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoy my take. I just share the things I think about and look at when I use a pen.
7:58 there's an old video on Nathan Tardiff's channel that shows air ink interchange very well. You should check it out.
I especially loved your discussion of the threads. Fascinating.
I always end up talking about threads

I know they've done some work with the photopolymers and refinement with the pen, so maybe they've sorted out some of those challenges.

WOW! That is gorgeous!
Cool pen!!! Love the DNA design, pretty cool.
your design feedback is fascinating, it makes me want to try to make a pen!
You should!
A very interesting pen. I liked your suggestions, which would make for a better pen with little extra cost.
I have to say it’s very beautiful, I did have a look on their website and I think the older clear version looks better
Indeed. I have the original DNA Hex pen, and the cap itself has an ugly crack that developed due to the tension of the screw used to mount the clip.

No burping as of yet, the pen has worked very well

I’m putting this one on the list. Thanks, Doodlebud.
