That imagery at 0:40 is a cut layer of a web browser game called “powder game” or something like it, was developed in 2007. I would assume that counts as old internet (god I loved using water, vine, and fire together)
That hand-drawn CoD edit with the pixel sorting and flawless smooths hits different. the smearing on the guns and everything... You are truly a master of your craft. The entire video showcases such a diverse skillset that it's hard to believe one person did all the visuals. It must have taken FOREVER. I love it, thank you for this.
My eyes, my brain, they couldn't even fathom how good all of that was. It captures my simultaneous love/nostalgia and complete distrust of the internet that we grew up in.
0:37 omg is that the powder game?? My dad introduced it to me when was about 5, I had so much fun with it, even if I didn't really understand it. I haven't seen anyone else acknowledge it before!!
This feels like both a loveletter to internet culture as well as a pardoy of it's absurdity. A fantastic, holistic capture of how the internet has been shaped throughout the years and has always been a chaotic melting pot of culture, identity, influences, and cats for some reason lol. You captured the early 2000s period, through the 2010s, and up til now, perfectly. As someone who grew up with the internet from the 2000s up til now and is now navigating my way through it as fellow creative, execellent work man. Thank you for your hard working and sharing this with us!
saving this video to show my kids what the internet was like when i was a little rascal because somehow perfectly captures the energy. love that our main character is a neet too - very perfect for our perpetually online time. cheers and thank you dearly, never stop.
the bit with the plushie slashing really hit home for some reason. the way there's all these borrowed UI elements, as if the main character can only express themselves or understand their life through gaming HUDs and stuff ... at best it's an exaggerated version of the tetris effect; at worst it's childish escapism. the way that all these UI elements are layered over a caricature of techno-capitalism (complete with ETH in the mix) really adds into the escapism angle. it's the whole "if i reframe exercise as stat grinding, i can stomach it" thing. here's the thing; i don't think it's either of those interpretations. i think it's like ... the sharp contrast of things that are seemingly childish (all the video game elements) with the cruel reality of factory work, and the way those two are blending together. it feels like it's saying something about techno-capitalism: how the adolescent age of the internet and freedom is over, and how that technology that shaped our childhood joys has evolved into the tech that shapes our adult lives. the freedom to explore and meet other outcasts online, now the thing that yokes us to the gig economy and reco-algo sludge. the thing that once gave us freedom is now the thing that binds us, and confusingly, it is both at the same time -- it still is a means of escape, in some ways, but the old ways of escapism are getting stamped out by massive corporations. or, tech is the thing that binds us, and it's also what we look to for escape. and the way the video plays in reverse near the end, as if going backwards through time ... some sort of nostalgia loop, kind of another way we're bound here, yearning for whatever the old web was. or maybe it's to say like, once an outcast always an outcast. the kind of brainrot you only have from being online for your entire adolescence. the tweet where someone says "so i have to memorize all these little pictures just to have a conversation with you?". or maybe im looking into it too much. (it's fun though! i like analyzing media.)
The way you were able to get such a consistent yet chaotic style, having overexposed and oversaturated images with visible pixels blend so well with real images, drawings, and digital art, perfectly encapsulating the internet, along with the catillion different references and perfectly chosen songs and sound effects. This is crack for my eyes and ears.
I watched this with my cat and she just stayed looking at the screen the whole video, so i guess she didn't hate it. This video requires you to be a very specific kind of person that is both a weeb and has been chronically online since 2006 to fully grasp the contents and the feel. You got a very unique vision and a great skill to pull it off.
My goodness the amount of effort put into this is incredible, I am seriously going frame by frame to read things, find hidden references, see the operating system having "420" and "meow" fused into words, my goodness. It's so beautiful, this is the talent we have for art. Lovely.
I'm totally obsessed with this video. It's like someone took all the weird, surreal stuff we find on the internet and mashed it together into this dreamlike sequence. I mean, it's like those 'Average (something)' images, but instead of just combining faces, it's like they're combining our entire online experience. It's thrilling and unsettling at the same time!
THE FUCKING PENDAMONIUM PART KILLED ME BRU You keyframe to tough. Your Swag Too Different. Your rotoscope too crazy. your references too niche. They’ll Kill You. amazing work :)
