He took the Vuelta off, which gave him the time to do altitude training instead, either by staying at elevation, or use of altitude tent.
Altitude training takes several weeks, and increases concentration of hemoglobin. And typically the effect lasts a couple of weeks.
Altitude training is legal according to WADA, and I would be surprised if most pros don't avail themselves.

Edit- there is an ongoing police investigation into Muriel’s incident, despite all our emotions running high on the subject, it would be inappropriate for GCN or other media outlets to speculate at this time.
Original- It’s time to stand up to the UCI properly GCN, your platform matters.
Muriel lay dying on the side of the road for an hour and a half before she was found with a serious head injury, found by pure chance. She was passed by every race official, every medic, every support car, and the broom wagon. She had a race transponder, and a head unit with her, and still no one realised. It took 2.5 hours to get her to a hospital that was THREE minutes away. THREE.
Deaths in cycling are always tragic, but something of an inevitability.
This one was not. This one puts blood directly on the hands of the UCI, and makes me sick.

I would argue it's not just down to the UCI. It's down to all the stakeholders to determine what safety really looks like in cycling as a sport.
It's such an easy word to speak of yet it's such a different thing to get right and manage effectively.
The UCI cannot directly manage safety - they can only set the requirements to create a safe sport.
Such a tragic outcome and this should shock the sport just like other industry failures.
Yes, its a sport with high risk and thus the medical response to any accident should be sh*t hot. The fact that Muriel lay undetected for so long was catastrophic.

IMHO this probably means more than any training protocol or equipment gains. A relaxed and focused metal state is one of the benefits.

I finished at 302W and it left me curled up on the floor. Is there such a thing as Zone 10? That's what the final 5 minutes felt like as I desperately tried to hang on to the watts. A near-death experience. It is beyond my comprehension, as fairly decent 287W FTP cyclist, that someone can bimble along at 340W for a few hours, presumably chatting to his mates. Incredible.

Even everyone starts to do like Pogacar doesn't mean that they will achieve is numbers, there are a few factors that they need to put in balance, for instance: Primoz Roglic arrived in cycling later than most riders because only when they told him that with his capacity to breathe above normal he should have a good shot (with the correct training),that's why some people say that the cause of his crashes are due to the fact that he doesn't ride the bike so well like others because he didn't have a cadets season or even a junior season like almost the riders in the world tour! However it is amazing that a country with only 2 million people can perform at a high level in different sports, only the achievement of the Slovenian national football team to qualify to the final tournament of European championship is already a great achievement! But to win the 3 grand tours in 2024 with 2 different riders is something that nobody could predict only a decade ago!! Season after season is becoming more and more exciting the quantity and quality of so many young riders which as soon as they get the chance to compete with the best they respect them but that doesn't mean that if they have a chance to fight for victory they take it seriously and give all they have to try to achieve the best result possible!!! PS. Just an example: look at the season that Thibault Nys made this season (2024)on road races, and only with 20 years old, and he also compete in cyclo-cross and his results are also astonishing!

Re any comparison of riders from different eras, it would be interesting to hear about the training and racing and lifestyle conditions of the year Eddy got his triple vs. Tadej today. And Stephen Roche, too, the '80s which were edging toward the future while still being very much that blue-collar old school. And I'm not fussing about the King's crowning of Tadej as best, just that the scenes half a century ago for Eddy and four decades ago for Stephen were different mountains to climb to get those triples, so was it the same or easier or harder or not really open to a fair comparison. And then there's the issue of injured competitors, Greg LeMond was not there in '87 and Tadej's top rivals were injured earlier this season. And whatever the outcome, all interesting to consider, even if the King has already handed the crown to Tadej as the greatest bicycle racer the world has ever known.

His comparisons to the other best throughout history are similar, drive, total commitment, there are no 2nd places. However he is from a generation that has data, comparing him to EM is all well and good, but if EM had the same data?? Pointless though as they are the greatest of their era. Once in a generation, just like all sports have them, but they don’t come under anywhere near as much scrutiny 🤬 let’s enjoy him. It’s up to everyone else to catch him up not for him to dumb down his results. Just like sky, they changed the game, and it was down to other teams to up their game. I hope he wins everything he wants. The other greats need to stop being cowards and worry about podium finishes, if TP can go for it so can others who are riding within themselves, if the continue they will keep losing.

Pog said it himself in a roundabout way - his Shimano power meter is inaccurate. If he is climbing in the small ring on his Z2 rides, it’s overreading by ~20W. So still very impressive, but knocks it down from 5W/kg

Some people have surmised that Pogacar's good form this year has come from more intensity of training. However, I can't help wonder if Inigo San Milan is right on the money when he says that building the mitochondrial engine is what's important. I reckon 340 watts zone 2 *by itself* is going to win some races simply because it vastly reduces the amount of time you spend out of zone 2. If you also consider that it will be constantly sparing carbohydrates, coupled with taking in 120 grams of carbs per hour, there is going to be a *lot* left in the tank when the hard efforts start.
The main question for me, though, is this monstrous Z2 power *all* genetic or are there some lessons to be learned from the training techniques. Long Z2 rides to heart rate for the win? How much intensity do you need to increase the power ceiling? And is it possible that since Pogacar doesn't like turbo training sessions, is the off-on nature of his hilly training actually an unintentional component of his success? It would be interesting to try 20 minutes of high Z2 followed by 5 minutes of basically nothing over and over and over again to see if it had a beneficial effect.

11:00 this kinda sticks out to me - i imagine there must be many who are discouraged from participating in events because they don't feel their power numbers line up to what they feel is necessary, and i'm sure that results in many riders at the very least missing out on a good day on the bike with likeminded individuals. I know Jeff from Norcal cycling has spoken many times on the value of tactical nouse over raw power from his experience in US Crit racing for example, but i wonder if GCN might have anything to say from a broader perspective?
Would make a good title, "power isn't everything"

Putting bottles or any other thing that is cup like upside down is actively working against your best interest. You should instead wash them with HOT water, as hot as you can get it, dry by hand as best you can, and then place right side up so that any lingering moisture can evaporate without being trapped within the bottle.

I can't help it, but had huge interrest in cycling during and before the Lance days. Lost it but after that, but gradually regained it over many years. This performance Tadej show smells similar, maybe even more than Lance achievements. No matter what "legal" trainig course he might be on I bet there is some stuff that add something to it. I would buy it if he showed this strengths "now and then" or under a period. He just keep on crushing anything in race after race. Todays Emilia just another one, and Lombaardia will be a walk in the park.
As back in Lance days journalist was on both side and sadly it took years to get what was wrong. Fear this will be the same with Tadej.
Tadej today got UAE and Saudi behind which means lots of money for UCI so they might not be too serious to dig deeper. Of course not starting in Olympic might be reason since that is a different ruling body. Consiperacy of course, but surely his results and numbers are over the moon. Is he not human.
Too many journalists today and TV folks are afraid to even breath foul play, but that was as in the Lances days.
For Tadej sake I hope I'm totally wrong.

I blew $50 on another 2nd hand ‘bent today, a French Canadian CCM Quetzal 140. Took transit across the city & rode back home at a leisurely 75W in delightful autumn colors. I’m sure the 340W story is of interest to some enthusiasts, but most wouldn’t care, actually.
(Most racers are pathway menaces, who have kinda sparked up an arms race with certain seniors who have the means to equip themselves with overpowered custom e-bikes that is leading to pathway speed enforcement, I’m sure. And guess what! Us 75W amateurs will be the ones making the complaint calls, against racers & seniors alike.)
