- Grumman promotional film produced in 1966 to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Blue Angels, featuring the Grumman F11F Tiger. At that time, The Blue Angels had flown only Grumman aircraft.

I was there in 1967 and saw these Tigers in action . at age 8 it was the greatest thing I ever saw..

The F11F Tiger was, in my opinion, the cleanest looking jet the blues ever flew. But my favorite is still the A4F "Super Fox" Skyhawk. Some call it "Scooter." Very nimble, even with the leading edge slats bolted up. The roll rate was awesome.
i agreed to a certain extent... but nothing was as impressive as the Phantom.

Flew the F-11 (Dec ‘69 ) as my last aircraft in flight training before receiving my Wings of Gold. What a sweet flying plane it was. Really enjoyed the tight formation of the Blues..
Tiger is such a beautiful fighter, just underpowered. And too bad the Super Tiger (which fixed the power problem by installing a J79) would never achieve production thanks to Lockheed bribery.
@@BlitzvogelMobius How much do you have to bribe a country to whore out it's national defense? The fact it was Japan and Germany were really surprising.
@@Scott11078 Just have to bribe the decision makers including those in charge of economic policy. I wonder if Grumman offered terms love license production like Lockheed did.
@@BlitzvogelMobius I think they were to build the first few, then ship some pre made kits then Mitsubishi was to build the rest. When I was stationed in Japan one of the base stores had a nice thick and expensive book on the Super Tiger $50.00 in 2000 dollars. It took a bit of saving to afford as an E4. The book was lost with most of my goods that the Navy lost in shipping stateside and I believe that was in the book.
@@BlitzvogelMobius I thought the Super Tiger lost out to the F8 Crusader? What did Lockheed have to do with that? I thought it screwed the deal with the Avro Arrow C-105.

Lakehurst NJ used to have an F11 painted in Blue Angeles colors at the front gate until the USAF became the landloard
When I flew the F-11 I knew why the Blues looked so good with it. The control stick was a two-piece thing that left and right was from the top of the stick and up and down was the base of the stick. Formation flying for a student like myself, I found it very easy to fly in close formation. I was also one of if not the prettiest Navy planes of all time.
Love the way the Blues landed in a 6 ship formation.They don't do that anymore.
I know, I never seen that before!! I guess it's too dangerous to continue.

I have only ever seem the Hornet show, and was absolutely blown away by some of these maneuvers. The diamond with the lead upside-down was really cool. My jaw dropped at the delta formation landing.
Oh, and the wing smoke was pretty cool too.
That roll rate at 8:23 is pretty impressive too.

I saw the F-11 Blue Angels fly at the Dodge Co. Airport, Juneau, WI. air show in about 1964 (or so). There was not enough runway to land and takeoff from the airport, so the Blue Angels came up from Madison WI, performed the show, then flew back, and the pilots visited later, coming planes that could land at the airport. I became an aerospace design engineer. I was impressed then with the airplane and I wanted to build an RC version of it. I could not find a plan anywhere, so I had to draw it. I got some pictures together to work from. Let's just say it is a work-in-progress. At work I got to meet people who were once part of the Blue Angel Team and told me things I had not known before. Thanks so much for this video, I enjoyed it.

I first saw them with A-4 Skyhawks. A Tight turning Bird.

I have been trying to remember what the Blue angles were flying in the mid 60s, the last time I saw them fly. This was it, the F11 Tiger. My dad got me a model kit of the Blue Angles and I was a little disappointed because it was the Skyhawk. I didn't say anything to my dad. I love the Skyhawk now. Thanks for posting this video!
I saw them transition from the F-11 Tiger to the F-4 Phantom then to the A-4 Skyhawk .Then to the F/A-18 .And the quality has never decreased

I think I was probably six years old the first time I saw them in an airshow in Tulsa OK and it was the last year they flew the F-11 Tiger.
I have seen the Blues fly the Tiger during the 1960s at NAS Whidbey. ,Washington State
I didnt know they used to do their shows up there. Now it's down at Boeing
@@devingraves8044 Then they changed it to Paine Field .Then to Boeing field .And the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds use to change back and forth,
@@devingraves8044 They used to do it a Paine Field near Everett ,Wash where they would alternate with the Air Force Thunderbirds .

Do they come here for anything other than Sea Fair? It doesn't seem like this state does a lot of air shows. When I was a kid in California I went to tons a year. We lived in El Toro so we went there for the bulk of them I was there for the Hornet crash and in the front row for the saber crash. I could feel the heat from that fireball. March airforce base had some good ones and the show Miramar did the year Top Gun came out was epic.
The last airshow I've been too was in 2000when I was stationed in Japan when Atsugi would put a show on. Now my son is 7 and wants to go to a show.

when I was a kid first seeing the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds, it was the first time I ever understood those superfans of Elvis or the Beatles who you'd see burst into tears on TV. I had always thought that was such a ridiculous response and was the strangest thing to me. Growing up with a diehard Marine for a father and my brother currently in the Air Force was when I first saw the Thunderbirds and sure enough I was choking back tears. I was probably 10 so give me a break. Now with a lot of age on me I'm sure I'd do it again. It was at Plattsburgh Air Force base in far northeastern NY. Clinton closed it to save the country money, I'll always hate him for that. It used to be a bustling little city with 2 huge malls, lots of shopping centers, and tons of business. It's been a ghost-town since then and the government has paid out at least 6 times in huge grants trying to revitalize the area. It still hasn't worked so I doubt we saved much money because I also doubt we sent all those airmen home and destroyed all the planes. We just transferred the vast majority to other bases. Let's be honest, the whole thing cost the taxpayers a fortune and it still is to this day. I hope to go see the Blue Angels or the Thunderbirds again sometime.
I just got to watch the Blues fly the new super Hornet a couple weeks ago, it was amazing with the new aircraft... the noise was just out of this world
@@Eirik36 That's awesome man. It's something that's stayed with me for 35+ years since I first saw the Thunderbirds flying the F-16's. Would love to see the Super Hornets today.
I remember my dad showing me these same Blue Angels in these F-11 Grumman Tigers when I was 10 in about 1965...Anyone know where this show was held, where this was filmed?

Sep 1966 the blue angels had a fatal accident in toronto when the f11 crashed into the island airport wall.
I worked at Loblaws ware house then and most of the crew went up on the roof and watched the show man that was a sickening crash

These were not very good planes. They only built 200 of them.
No not necessarily so. It was an era of fast development of newer fighters.
You had the F-8 Crusader coming down the line, the F-4 Phantom was not far behind.
USN roles for aircraft was adjusting to the times. Attack aircraft that came soon included the A-4 Skyhawk , A-7 Corsair II and the great all weather strike aircraft the A-6 Intruder. Hell the USN had true bombers at the time including the RB-66 Destroyer and the most beautiful A-5A Vigilante.
The F-11F Tiger was a fine jet fighter, that like many others saw fast aviation development move beyond it and it's purpose.
