Clancy Brown’s a national treasure!! It’s incredible that he voiced both Rhino and George Stacy!! On another note, we get to see the Big Man!! (Originally Kingpin was gonna be the villain but they couldn’t use him due to copyright issues)
When I first saw that scene whit Tombstone, it really feels like a very dangerous villain, not whit the crazy powers that the other villains so far, but still whit battle capability, resources and most important, the influence and planning that at the end, gives him this advantage position in the society that even media and the security sees him as a model civilian Since I’ve watch this series always in Spanish, see it again whit the og voices hits very different but still fresh, Keith David voice for L Thompson is very menacing yet chill too, love the work the man did here
I love how this show is obviously leading up to the sinister six, and man, is it handled well. We even saw the 3 crooks that would become the Rhino, Sandman, and Shocker long before they got their powers.
Fun Fact: Both Spider-Man and Harry Osborn's VAs played each other's characters in the Spider-Man: Friend or Foe video game. Josh Keaton voiced Harry Osborn/New Goblin in the game, whereas he plays Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Spectacular Spider-Man. And James Arnold Taylor played Peter Parker/Spider Man in Friend or Foe, but played Harry Osborn in Spectacular Spider-Man. I think both this show and the game were made around the same time as each other.
Now we get to see the face of the Big Man, AKA Tombstone. I've lost count at how many people thought he was supposed to be Kingpin when they watched the first episode, so it always puts a smile on my face when they reach this episode. Though the show WAS originally going to use Kingpin but they couldn't since his rights were sort of tied up with 20th Century Fox thanks to him becoming Daredevil's archenemy since the 80s (despite being introduced as a Spider-Man villain first in the 60s). I'm not complaining though, Tombstone in the comics was more of a henchman so he got an upgrade here. And what an introduction he had. We just saw Peter take down the Rhino but "a pale guy in a suit" laid him out in 2 seconds. The moment where Tombstone offers him a job with a briefcase full of money with the condition that he look the other way for some small crimes is probably one of my favorite line deliveries from Josh Keaton with "I can't ever look the other way again." You can tell that line has SO much emotion behind it for Peter and is a testament to Keaton's talent as a voice actor. Speaking of face reveals, the cherry on top moment for this episode, we FINALLY get to see Mary Jane after the constant teasing since episode 4. Greg Weisman and co. really loved the comics when they made this show, and does it show with how they built up MJ's reveal EXACTLY like how she was introduced in the 60s Lee/Ditko run with her being a faceless character (besides one instance where Betty and Liz saw her face and thought she "looks like a screen star") until her big reveal in Amazing Spider-Man issue 42. The show even managed to get the exact framing of the original comic panel along with MJ's signature line, and boy did Peter hit the jackpot. I can't wait for next week's episode, it's a game changer for the show and one of my favorite episodes of the series.
I mean they was a 15 year difference between my parents. They actually met the first time when he was 34 and she was 19. Didn't get married till years later, but still. It's not really odd if it's 2 people that are adults. Now Peter dating a 20 year old is off putting. So I get Aunt May being like nope, not happening.
I know people are going to bring up that they didn't have the rights to Kingpin at the time so they used Tombstone. Also, I agree about Kevin Michael Richards sounding like Keith David. Perhaps he is doing an impression and while I have gotten used to the voice I can't help but wonder how cool it would be if Keith David was able to voice him throughout the series 🤔.
I know it won't happen, but i hope this show pulls an X-Men 97 and comes back for another season so we can get Scorpion and Carnage and maybe Hobgoblin and Hydro-Man and other villains😅
The show has too many rights issues unfortunately. Sony owns the show but Marvel owns the rights to make Spider-Man shows. Avengers Earth's Mightiest and Wolverine and the X-Men are the shows from this era that can actually get a revival.
I really only know Tombstone from the Insomniac game but I had a feeling he was the big bad just because of the voice. That bass, that accent, it had to be him.
The thing about Betty and Peter is that if they are both consenting parties it shouldn’t be an issue, especially if the younger of the two is the one pushing for it That comes with the biggest BUT ever of “for a fall formal”, anything above that and it just becomes weird at best or criminal at worst. Perhaps going to a dance but anything beyond that is a problem. I don't blame Betty for not going to the dance with a minor, she probably would have done that irrespective of Aunt May 🤔.
@@CLDJ227Maybe, yeah, but if we're talking about a real life scenario, someone being persistent like Peter could potentially get a long way it's happened many times.
Ive seen the introduction of spectacular Spiderman's Tombstone a few times. I always get chills at the ending. "Ive won every battle never came close to winning the War. But Tombstone made 1 big mistake. NOW I KNOW THERE IS A WAR. SO BRING IT ON"
Rhinos have tuff hides, who knew? Clancy Brown here as Captain Stacy. Keith David as Tombstone in a Kingpin role. Hera Syndulla herself Vanessa Marshall as MJ. This show has everything
0:40 Actually Eric 🧐, he was suppose to be Jimmy's younger brother, also named Jimmy (I think the one who died went professionally as James Olsen) and we only saw Jimmy 2.0 in the series finale after they time jumped ahead about 7 years in the final scene based on Clark's line of dialogue and Chloe's son looking 6 or 7. And both Jimmy's were played by Aaron Ashmore. His twin brother Shawn Ashmore appeared earlier in the series as one of the Meteor freaks. Besides, they only did this shocking death of a main character, it's not like anyone else would pull the same stunt, like casting an unknown to play a CIA agent who gets killed in the first few minutes of a movie...
Spectacular Spider-Man came out when I started reading the giant-sized graphic novels. I read through issues 1-100. I had a huge appreciation that this series heavily borrowed elements from the early Spider-Man years. In this episode Peter trying to date Betty is a great nod to how Betty was Peter's first girlfriend. Betty was a few years older than Peter there too, and they dated when he was in high school. A 20-year-old dating a 16-year-old would stand out more for modern audiences, so I liked how the series dealt with it here. I geeked out at the time when I watched first watched this series and they mentioned the Big Man. He was probably the first major crime lord Spider-Man faced, and the Enforcers worked for him (although in the comics the first one was one of Peter's co-workers). I think the show runners being denied the use of Kingpin worked out well. In the long run I think it helped Spectacular Spider-Man stand out from the 90s animated series, since they used Kingpin in similar role. Using the Big Man as the crime lord in control of most of New York's crime in Spider-Man's early years is a great nod to the comics, changing the identity Tombstone was a good way to get a more intimidating and more recognizable Spider-Man villain in the role. Even having so many of Peter's love interests/future girlfriends in the show is pretty true to the comics. Aaron mentioning being unsure if the show was going MJ route or Gwen route is likely very intentional. In high school there was shaping of Betty and Liz Allen rivalry for Petter, while the early college years had Gwen and Mary Jane rivalry. The series having all four women (and eventually other iconic love interests) does make the viewers question which girl will snag Peter. Peter fumbling or missing signs, while his double life getting in the way is so true to form.
The possible age gap was noticed in the ‘60s comics as well. In the letters column, readers asked if Betty was older than Peter. The editorial response was that she’s actually slightly younger, but she dropped out of school to join the workforce and support her mother. Considering Marvel Comics also had age-gap relationships at the time like Reed Richards/Sue Storm, and Hank Pym/Janet Van Dyne, it was more accepted if the man in the relationship is older. It’s possible the age gap with Peter and Betty was only a concern if it meant Peter was the younger one. I’m kind of surprised the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon tackled the Peter/Betty relationship the way they did, considering Peter’s 16 and still a minor. Oddly, while Betty is reluctant and Aunt May wants to shut it down immediately, that point is never specifically brought up as a reason.
Honestly, an age gap of 16 and 20 has only really been a problem in more modern recent times for a very long time. Once again, until even somewhat recently, it wasn't considered that big of a deal.
My aunt and uncles age difference is 5 years, but ny uncle being the younger one was 20 when they met. So that's fair, but knowing that some highschool classmates 'dated' some 22 year olds as freshman and sophomores. Its really weird. Peter gotta calm down
Man, with the plotline in the Insomniac games of kinda wanting to remove the armor and how intimidating he is in those and in this show, I hope Rhino gets proper justice in a Spider-Man movie. Imagine if he had immigrated over with a family and was only doing crimes to keep them afloat, gets fed up with Spidey constantly stopping him so he takes up an offer to be a test subject for some new super armor, and realizes way too late he can never take it off and live a normal life, so he misplaces that rage and sorrow on the citizens of new york and Spider-man. That would certainly make up for that joke of a character in ASM2.
@@BaconNuke I think it's cause Daredevil used him and was owned by Fox at the time. Spiderman was Sony. So it makes sense they couldn't use characters linked to another studios IP. Also to me Kingpin is a Daredevil villain more than a Spiderman one.
I had a Hulk comic where he was on a baseball team and his opponents had some guy called Alex O'Hirn. I believe it was an alias that Rhino used as his real name is Russian OR a DIFFERENT rhino? I think its an alias. anyways hulk kicked his @$$ pretty easily in the end. And as I previously mentioned, O'Hirn is an anagram for rhino.

This version of Tombstone was intimidating and badass. Always cool headed, smart and tough as hell.
This show was my introduction to Tombstone and this show definitely did him justice
Then again all of Spidey's villains are great in this show
Osborne’s situation really is a win/win/win for him.
The Big Man funds his experiments and provides him with test subjects, when Spider-Man inevitably beats them Oscorp get the contracts to repair any damage and build the necessary containment facilities and should he discover any replicable methods of giving people powers he can sell it to the military
3:29 Spider-Man: And you shoukd pullover...
Bad guy no.2: Right, o-ok...
I like how the bad guy actually listened to Spider-Man 😂.
Doctor Otto Octavius was actually first seen in the very first episode with Adrian Toomes (who would later become the Vulture), just before Norman Osborne showed up.
As for Alex O’Hirn, “O’Hirn” is an anagram for “Rhino”.
Best Mary Jane in my opinion
alonzo "lonnie" lincon was mobster who.used to bully robbie robertson and other kids back in school days
"face it tiger, you just hit the jackpot" line was taken directly from amazing spiderman #42
fun fact: in the comics before her full introduction, her face was all ways obsecured
I completely feel for peter. I was a freshman dating a senior girl in my HS and went to her prom together amazing time, i never got to go to my actual prom. But anyway my mother pulled the "you're too old for my son" talk with her and there went my short lived relationship. She was one of the only girls i got to be myself around
Among a lot of characters this show has my favorite takes on Rhino and Jameson.
It’s so easy to forget Jameson actually cares. Spectacular Spider-Man gets it.
Can’t tell ya how happy I am to rewatch this every week with y’all.
I love me a good ol' brawl of strength vs strength but I also love when the hero wins through intelligence and observation and this is a solid example. It's a weakness that's logical for Rhino to have but isn't super obvious and thus it makes Spider-Man actually seem intelligent for picking up on it.
Clancy Brown’s a national treasure!! It’s incredible that he voiced both Rhino and George Stacy!! On another note, we get to see the Big Man!! (Originally Kingpin was gonna be the villain but they couldn’t use him due to copyright issues)
The age difference convo always gets me cause my Oldest brother is 11 years younger than his wife and she used to babysit him lmao
My dad was 16 or so years older than my mom.
Clancy Brown makes a great Rhino
Woah that's Clancy Brown?! I feel stupid for not realizing that all these years but now it seems so obvious 😅
When I first saw that scene whit Tombstone, it really feels like a very dangerous villain, not whit the crazy powers that the other villains so far, but still whit battle capability, resources and most important, the influence and planning that at the end, gives him this advantage position in the society that even media and the security sees him as a model civilian
Since I’ve watch this series always in Spanish, see it again whit the og voices hits very different but still fresh, Keith David voice for L Thompson is very menacing yet chill too, love the work the man did here
I love how this show is obviously leading up to the sinister six, and man, is it handled well.
“When my dad was a senior, my mom was in the second grade.”
….. awkward silence……..
“Yeah……”
I mean they was a 15 year difference between my parents. They actually met the first time when he was 34 and she was 19. Didn't get married till years later, but still. It's not really odd if it's 2 people that are adults. Now Peter dating a 20 year old is off putting. So I get Aunt May being like nope, not happening.
@@kingcaesar3693Yeah, as long as both are considered adults it’s fine but if one is very clearly still growing up at the time, yikes

18:40 Love this scene! Straight out of the comic! Now this, puts a smile on my face 😌
I like how both in this and the first Spider-Man movie, J. Jonah Jameson did what he could to protect Peter even while being held up by the throat.
18:42 Jackpot!
@@marvelfantasy472 Would love to see those come back too 😎.

"The world's largest dehydrated turtle"
The thing about Betty and Peter is that if they are both consenting parties it shouldn’t be an issue, especially if the younger of the two is the one pushing for it
That comes with the biggest BUT ever of “for a fall formal”, anything above that and it just becomes weird at best or criminal at worst. I don’t think anyone would’ve really cared if Betsy did go with Pete, but since Aunt May was trying her hardest to get Mary Jane with Peter because she’s the best aunt ever, she had to nip that in the bud.

Jameson may have his faults, but good on him to protect Peter.
Clancy brown is classic!
My aunt and uncles age difference is 5 years, but ny uncle being the younger one was 20 when they met. So that's fair, but knowing that some highschool classmates 'dated' some 22 year olds as freshman and sophomores. Its really weird. Peter gotta calm down
It happens so frequently and so commonly even now I find it hard to call it weird with that being the case.
My dad was 16 or so years older than my mom.
I knew as soon as Eric saw the title he'd call out the ship.
I'm 40. My wife is 30. When we got married, we were 37 and 27.
O'hirn. Rohin. Rhoin. Rhino.
Great episode revealing the main criminal mastermind of the season.
That would certainly make up for that joke of a character in ASM2.
i really thought "big man" was gonna turn out to be kingpin so having it be tombstone is crazy
Apparently the writers wanted it to be Kingpin but couldn't get the character for whatever reason so they just wrote Tombstone like Kingpin
It's essentially Kingpin with Tombstone's face
@@BaconNuke I think it's cause Daredevil used him and was owned by Fox at the time. Spiderman was Sony. So it makes sense they couldn't use characters linked to another studios IP. Also to me Kingpin is a Daredevil villain more than a Spiderman one.
