QUICK ASIDE: apparently I referred to a love interest as "he" I tried to keep it gender neutral but apparently I was projecting... Sorry! My best friend was like DAN SHE'S GAY lol
In a live show she said that Song In E was about how the most hurtful thing isn’t when someone is cruel to you, but when they show you a kindness that you haven’t shown them. That’s it like looking in a mirror and seeing the true nature of your character. Like others have said you should check out Sprained Ankle. It’s shorter than this album and is a very stripped down and raw album. It was her first album so there’s not as much production and is mostly just her with a guitar. Love the reaction though, the emotion you showed during Song in E is similar to how I reacted the first time I heard it.
'Little Oblivions' has been in constant rotation with other albums (so that I can take the edge off being obsessed) for about three months now. Playlist, rinse, repeat. It's an astounding album on so many levels. Her wordsmithery ('my greatest fears turn out to be the gift of prophesy', 'I chase your form across the bed', 'When I could spend the weekend out on a bender Do I get callous or do I stay tender?'), her vocal phrasings, the production gems, the understated yet impactful nature of the songs... I don't often describe an album with this descriptor, but I can unequivocally use it with 'Little Oblivions': astonishing.
Wow thank you for reacting to Julien Baker. She's so talented. Please react to Phoebe Bridgers' debut album 'Stranger In The Alps' and also their group 'boygenius'.
Some of her lyrics that hit me like a punch to the face. When she talks about seeing the “gruesome beauty of your face in everyone [she] meet[s]” I interpret it as seeing God’s image in people. I'll wrap Orion's belt around my neck Oh, I miss the high, how it dulled the terror and the beauty and now I see everything in startling intensity Do I get callous or do I stay tender? Ooh, there's no glory in love, only the gore of our hearts. Ooh, let it come for my throat, take me and tear me apart Like a scratch-off ticket, how you dig your nails into my skin. Honey, I'm not stupid. I know no one wins this kind of thing. You pulled a moth out from the grill of your truck, saying it's a shame. How come it's so much easier with anything less than human, letting yourself be tender. Who put me in your way to find? And what right had you not to let me die? Say I miss you like a mantra, until I forget what it means. It doesn't matter what you tell me I just need to hear you speak. All my greatest fears turn out to be the gift of prophecy Oh, good God, when you gonna call it off? Climb down off of the cross and change your mind?
ik this is an old video but the song favor ties in with graceland too and punisher and also please stay on home video by lucy dacus. they’re all super sad when you listen to them in order to tell the full story
Love your explanations about the songs! As a context, Julien has always been open about her mental health struggles and previous substance abuse issues. She actually relapsed before writing this record. She has also always identified as a Christian and has referenced God in most of her old songs. But I think she chose to distance her religion from this album and focused about her struggles during her relapse. The drowned out lyrics in Favor has been raised ever since it was released as a single. It's disappointing because it features the bg vocals of lucy and phoebe but her live performances of the song have been fantastic.

I'm excited to go back and discover their earlier stuff definitely!!
Yes! Love to see reactions to Julien! There's not enough in the world.
You should take a listen to her debut album, Sprained Ankle. It is one of the most emotional and beautiful albums I've ever heard.
I'll definitely be going back and checking it out!
Your cool
Some of her lyrics that hit me like a punch to the face.

Also, if you think Song in E is painfully sad, Funeral Pyre will hurt you and Decorated Lawns would destroy you. Haha
Ok that makes sense she's been through a lot and you can really hear it in the music
Really enjoyed your reaction to Julien Baker! It's great to see more people get into her music and appreciate it the way you did.
I loved your analysis and reaction. I would love to see you do this for her first album, Sprained Ankle ❤️
Amazing
💕
how did i know you were going to speak in a british accent just by looking at the thumbnail
Lololol
If you liked the production on this record, check out "Remind Me Tomorrow" by Sharon Van Etten!
Please react to lucy dacus's album historian or the boygenius ep. Love the video!
