I just read his book, and unlike the title, he didn't build the brand all alone at all. The book taught me how important networking and finding people with same interests actually is. Sure, he believed in his brand so much that nothing could have stopped him but he also had an amazing group who did everything they could to help him execute his dream.

A key takeaway to underscore: he paid $35 to a student at a local university for a logo. I always tell my clients & partners that there's amazing talent at universities. Students are anxious to apply their budding skills, knowledge, perspective, and talents to get valuable, real world experience (outside of internships). Yet, their talents remain underutilized. They should be more included in the convo, they have alot to offer.

They didn’t have any money at the time and that was all they could pay. When the company went public, they gave the designer shares of the company that is Equivalent to $1m. You are right though, there are many talent at the university.

They relatively had nothing when the logo was designed. They didn't even have a name for their brand ..

@@finelife6019 35$ back then was like 230$ now which is really little if you compare it to what you would need to pay for a company to do the job but for a student who did it for 2$/h (=13$ today) it’s pretty fair I‘d say.

I am currently reading "Shoe Dog" and the only thing I got to say is that the book is a masterpiece at showing us how a normal guy from Portland became to be one of the richest and most successful humans alive. Unlike most successful people that will go on telling others about how special they are, Phil Knight tells us his whole story that starts with him struggling to keep his company "Blue Ribbon Sports" alive and ends with the actual company we know today as Nike. He shows us that the path to success isn't as easy as some think and that you will probably have to deal with a lot of problems to achieve what you want. He's a champion that dealt with so many problems when his company started out like the lawsuit that Onitsuka filed against Blue Ribbon, the competitors he faced, and even the banks that wouldn't lend him money. I believe that his book is a must-read for anyone that aspires to be successful.

Phil Knight didn't just stumble onto Onitsuka. He was introduced by a man named Frank Endo who at the time was importing Onitsuka gymnastics shoes to America. Mr. Endo told me that the first Nike logo was half an arrow. But it was difficult for the sewers to sew the right angles. He said he recommended curves instead of angles and drew a picture of a half arrow into the swoosh. I asked him, are you telling me that you actually invented the Nike logo? He just smiled. I didn't know how to share this story until just watching this video.

How Michael Jordan joined NIKE at that time and how he made it so popular is also the good one if u are interested.

Would have never guessed that Nike shoes originated in Japan. I know they had a contract but kinda surprised Japan didn’t sue for taking their designs, modifying it, and selling it under a different name.

That One Man is Michael Jordan, Nike NEEDED him. It was in 1984 that Nike's popularity grew when Michael Jordan started endorsing Nike. Phil Knight owned Nike, but MJ made Nike. They just became popular bc of MJ and people only bought the shoes because of MJ, everyone wanted to be like Mike. The shoes that the people bought was the shoes with the Jordan logo not with the Nike logo.

It was all Bill Bowerman, he was the guy in a position of influence. Pretty much like an influencer selling things today. It is going to work if you already have a name for yourself.

Nike was already big prior to Jordan's entry to the NBA.
The only thing MJ should be given credit for is the fact that HE WAS THE ONE WHO CAUSED NIKE TO DOMINATE THE NBA.
But let's be honest here. Mike is not the main cause of Nike's rise to dominance.

Onitsuka became Asics. Still developing very good running shoes, continues to innovate unlike Nike who spends more time and money on marketing their shoes.
At that rate, Nike might run out of ideas and probably reverse engineer an Asics shoe again like they did many years ago.

Japanese shoes could do to German shoes what Japanese cameras did to German cameras. They just need to have better marketing (but then that may eat into the budget for R&D). I know because when I was coaching children I had to buy football (not soccer) shoes. Before doing so, I tested every big brand (Adidas, Puma, Nike, Asics, Mizuno, etc,) to see which one would allow me to move best. Mizuno were the most comfortable and gave me the best freedom of movement. Next time, you see a jogger, check what brand shoes they are wearing. I guarantee that the majority of the time it will Mizuno or Asics. That's because people who run (and are not duped by marketing strategies) want the best.

My first pair of Nike running shoes was the Nile LD 1000 back in 1976. It was a great pair of running shoes for its time. It offered broad waffle soles for great stability. It's successor was the Nike LDV which was introduced around 1978 which was also a great running shoe, but the soles were a bit narrow than the 1000. When the first generation of Nike Air came out sometime around 1979-1980 those shoes were a pile of junk. During my beach run, which was 10 miles, I noticed the soles were coming apart from the mid soles. Around the 6 mile run I had to stop and walk home. The beach salt water was too harsh for those shoes! Sometime in the mid 1980's as Nike was becoming commercialized, the quality in distance running shoes was not there anymore. They seem to focused more on sneakers and sport clothing.

    *From Wikipedia:*
In September 1983, nearly three years after the company went public, Knight invited Carolyn Davidson to a company lunch. There, he presented her with a diamond ring engraved with the Swoosh and an envelope filled with 500 shares of Nike stock (which have since split into 32,000 shares). Of the gift, Davidson says, _"this was something rather special for Phil to do, because I originally billed him and he paid that invoice."_ Davidson went on to be known as _"The Logo Lady"_
